METCO 105SFP ALUMINUM OXIDE POWDER

Summary: METCO 105SFP is a superfine premium grade of white, high purity, fused aluminum oxide powder for spraying with the METCO Flame Spray Processes. It was designed to produce hard, dense ceramic coatings with excellent wear resistance.

METCO 105SFP is designated as a premium grade material because it has ex-cellent flow properties, as a result of its narrow particle size distri- bution, controlled particle shape and minimal percentage of ultrafine particles. The excellent flow properties of this material make it suit-able to be applied with both the METCO Plasma Flame Spray System and the ThermoSpray System. Powder feed is smooth and consistent, producing coatings which are uniform and smoother as-sprayed.

In addition, ThermoSpray coatings of METCO 105SFP exhibit higher wear re-sistance than ThermoSpray coatings of either METCO 101 or METCO 105 Aluminum Oxide powders.

METCO 105SFP coatings are recommended for resistance to wear by abrasive grains, hard surfaces, particle erosion and cavitation at all temperatures below 1000 F (540 C). They can be used for many applications in any industry, particularly in mechanical seal areas such as pump seals.

METCO 105SFP should also find use on applications where the requirement for wear resistance is accompanied with a need for a low coefficient of friction, such as computer recording heads or any machine element in contact with fibers and threads in the textile industry. METCO 105SFP coatings can be finished to any one of a number of surface textures, over which the fiber or thread passes, to provide a particular friction characteristic.

METCO 105SFP coatings provide high dielectric strengths, which make them particularly suitable for use in the electronic industry. Plasma coatings typically show 450-500 volts/mil and ThermoSpray show dielectric strengths typically 300-350 volts/mil.

Plasma sprayed coatings of METCO 105SFP are competitive with Union Carbide's LA-2 (DETONATION GUN) and LA-6 (PLASMA) aluminum oxide coatings.

This issue has been revised to:

1. Revise 5P and 6P ThermoSpray Gun gas lighting pressures and flows to reduce the chance of backfiring.

2. To add Type 9MB and 10MB plasma parameters.

THICKNESS LIMITATION:

Do not apply METCO 105SFP to a thickness greater than .020" (.50 mm) with either the ThermoSpray or Plasma Systems. With thicker coatings there is a risk of cracking.

WEAR RESISTANCE:

Abrasive wear tests, using a water slurry of aluminum oxide, have been conducted to determine the relative abrasive grain wear resistance of METCO 105SFP coatings.

Coatings of METCO 105SFP, produced with the Type 6P ThermoSpray System, exhibit wear resistance approximately 100% higher than ThermoSpray coatings of METCO 101 or METCO 105.

Coatings of METCO 105SFP, produced with the Type 5P ThermoSpray System, exhibit slightly better wear resistance than ThermoSpray coatings of METCO 101 or METCO 105.

DIELECTRIC STRENGTH:

Laboratory tests show that the dielectric strength of METCO 105SFP coatings will vary with the method of spraying and the type of surface preparation. The values shown in the "Typical Physical Properties of the Coatings" were obtained on different sample coatings of 105SFP.

In order to obtain the maximum dielectric strength for any particular coating, it is recommended that an additional .002" (.05 mm) of coating be applied to compensate for any measurement error. The use of a phenolic sealant such as METCOSEAL AP or METCOSEAL BP will effectively increase the dielectric strength.

The lower dielectric strength of the as-sprayed coating is the result of the inability to accurately measure the true effective thickness of these coatings. This measurement error became significant when testing thin coatings (.003-.004") (.08-.1 mm) because of the surface asperities. The T105SFP-10 and T105SFP-11 as-sprayed surfaces are slightly coarser than the P105SFP-10 and P105SFP-13 coatings. The T105SFP coatings are slightly more porous than the P105SFP coatings and as a result the dielectric strength is somewhat lower.

FINISHING: •

Because the as-sprayed texture of the coating is so smooth, finishes down to 20 microinches as (.5 microns) are readily obtainable by brushing. Good finishes have been obtained by using a urethane backed flexible brush (#167, manufactured by Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing) with Clover brand Grade A lapping compound (-280 grit) and with a slurry of 240-280 grit silicon carbide in water.

The coating changes color from white to gray when brushed with lapping compound, because of the oil in the lapping compound. The discoloration is easily removed by vapor degreasing.

The coatings can be wet ground with 150 grit and 400 grit diamond wheels, using standard speeds and feeds for grinding ceramics.

The coatings can also be lapped, using standard lapping compounds, tools and procedures.

SPRAYING:

Coatings of METCO 105SFP should be applied with the spray parameters recommended in this bulletin.

METCO 105SFP has been successfully applied over a wide range of traverse speeds. The most important factor governing the traverse speed is the substrate temperature. It is extremely important not to cause localized overheating by traversing too slowly. A traverse speed of at least 25 ft./min. is recommended. Rotating parts, such as 1-2 inch (25-50 mm) diameter shafts, have been successfully sprayed at gun traverse speeds of 5 feet/minute (0.03 m/s) with the part rotating at approximately 200 SFPM (1.02 m/s).

Substrate Preheat Temperature: Normal 200°-250°F (90°-120°C). Substrate Temperature During Spraying: Normal 400 ° F Maximum (200°C).

SAFETY MEASURES:

Flame spraying is a completely safe process when performed in accordance with "METCO's Safety Measures". Familiarize yourself with local safety regulations before starting spraying operations. DO NOT operate your spraying equipment or use the spray material supplied before you have thoroughly read the METCO Instruction Manual.

• DISREGARDING THESE INSTRUCTIONS MAY BE DANGEROUS TO YOUR HEALTH.
