He observes that recreating in green spaces supports social interaction and thereby promotes social support. He cites one Swedish study that found that parents with children that live in places that allow for outdoor access have twice as many friends as children that have restricted access to recreation in natural spaces. Superiorland Ski Club

With Dan Wiitala, June Link, and Steve Kuhl recently stepping down after years of hard work advocating for Superiorland and kid’s and young adult skiing in our community we found ourselves in need of some new blood for the board. We are pleased to announce the addition of Karin Markey and Gary Wurtz to the Superi-orland Ski Club board of directors.

Karin Markey has been a skier all of her life and is a member of the National Ski Patrol at Boyne Highlands. Her day job is at UPHS as the Director of Quality and Patient Safety. Karin’s son, Sam (a sophomore at MSHS), became interested in Nordic skiing last season. Much to Karin and her husband Patrick’s surprise, they found themselves in a fast learning curve to figure out this new family sport. They have found the cross country skiers a dedicated, welcoming, and “hardcore,” community of people. Karin has joined the board to support and better under-stand this new family sport. She hopes to contribute to helping our community stay active and healthy throughout our long winters.

Gary Wurtz moved to Marquette in 2010 as an 18 year old NMU freshman. Gary says Marquette has been good to him. Now at 27 with a previously attained four year bachelor degree, Gary works in his field of study at the Marquette Golf Club. Gary’s year is split up with golf in the summer and Nordic skiing in the winter. Gary continues to look for new challenges and the Superiorland Ski Club Board position fits right in with this search for challenges. When not golfing and skiing Gary enjoys nothing more than camping and waking up in the morning while en-joying a good cup of coffee under a tall white pine. Throw a loon call in from a wilderness lake and Gary is in his happy place.

We’ve had our first snow, the Lake Superior Shore Run fundraiser is successfully behind us, and we are planning for the annual ski swap on November 16th at the Sands Township Hall. This would be a good time to think about the benefits of cross country skiing. Beyond the obvious fitness and healthy lifestyle our sport boosts, there are some other advantages to this sport on our youth and young adults. In 2005 Richard Louv wrote about the advantages to outdoor recreation in his book Last Child in the Woods. He observes that recreating in green spaces supports social interaction and thereby promotes social support. He cites one Swedish study that found that parents with children that live in places that allow for outdoor access have twice as many friends as children that have restricted access to recreation in natural spaces. So what’s good for the body is good for the mind. Of course all of you skiers know this already. Gliding along a beautiful ski trail with your friends is a wonderful way to spend the day.

All of us on the Superiorland Ski Club Board would like to thank all the parent’s and community members that support youth Nordic skiing in the Marquette Coun-ty area. Without your support we would be unable to continue our efforts to sup-port all of our Nordic ski programs.

SSC Prep Team Update The fall season is here and we’re looking forward to getting on snow in the next few months. The SSC Prep Team is a middle school group for both recreational and racing skiers. We teach skiers both classic and skate technique along with introduction to racing. Skiers of all skill levels are invit-ed to join.

We’d like to try a few new things this year. We are hoping to split the prep team up (at times) into a competition group and development group. With a wide range of abilities, we are hoping to better challenge beginners and experienced skiers. We are still working on what this will look like. Also, we are hoping some skiers will compete in two out of town races this year as well. The first being in Houghton during late December and the second being at the H.S. Championships Traverse City in mid February.

As in the past, we plan to meet twice a week at 4:00pm, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from mid November thru February. We also plan to jointly host a Marquette County race series (with Ishpeming Ski Club) with a total of 5 rac-es that will occur on weekday evenings. This race series is a perfect place to get experience in competition, with the races being a mix of classic and skate, with distances varying from sprint to 3km in length.

We hope you can join us for another fun season of skiing, and some racing

This summer was a very fun and beneficial training period for our skiers. A new rule was initiated at the beginning of the summer, each minute the skiers were late was ten pushups. This helped teaching the athletes that it is important to show up to practice early, and be ready by the time prac-tice was supposed to start.

We followed a training program that ramped up as the weeks went on. The cycle went like this: the first week was easy, the second week was a medium intensity week, the third week was very high intensity, and the last week was a volume week. We were able to complete the four-week cycle twice. We had around six dedicated skiers during the program. Each skier benefitted in his or her own way. We focused a lot on specific strength, and technique. We were able to use video footage to show the skiers their technique during both classic and skate drills.

As the summer went on, I was able to see the fitness, along with their technique improve. At the end of the summer the skiers competed in a time trial; which we will be able to use the data to com-pare each skiers for future time trials and progressive improvement. I was very satisfied with the training of the athletes this summer.

Starting this year, our Great Lakes Division includes the clubs from Wisconsin and we are looking forward to a full schedule of races with a much wider range of competition. We will also be continu-ing our Marquette County Cup series with the Ishpeming Ski Club. I am very excited and motivated moving into the ski season.

Winter is fast approaching and we are gearing up for another great season of Ski Cats. We will be hosting sessions at both the Noquemanon Trailhead and Blueberry Ridge. Season long rentals will be available, so you can use the equipment any time, not just during the lessons so you and your children can practice what we teach all winter long. We will be contacting volunteer coaches soon. These volunteers are the key to making our pro-gram a success. Last year, we had around 95 participants. Extra coaches mean smaller groups and more effective instruction. Volunteers will be given a quick lesson and what and how to teach prior to the season starting. It also makes it easier to group kids of similar age and ability levels together for the most positive experience possible. We plan to have a kick-off gathering (date to be determined) to distribute the rental equipment and offer a chance for folks to sign up for volunteer positions. This could involve: on-snow parent helpers, coaching or assistant coaching, or helping with the coveted after-practice snack. Dates are tentatively set as Jan 12

The Ishpeming Ski Club (ISC) Nordic Ski Team is composed of high school and middle school skiers from Negaunee, Ishpeming, Westwood, Marquette, and Big Bay. Skiers train and compete in their choice of ski jumping, cross-country, or Nordic Combined (both ski jumping and cross-country).

Spring, Summer and Fall were busy for the ISC. Volunteers rebuilt the entire landing of the K40 ski jump throughout May, June and early July. The project involved removing the year-round plastic ski surface, the underlying belting, re-grading the hill, replacing the belting, and reinstalling the plastic surface. All work was completed before the ISC hosted a Central Division Junior Ski Jumping & Nordic Combined Summer Camp in early July.

The remainder of the summer was spent clearing the ice-storm damaged trees along the Norman Juhola Trail System, repairing eroded portions of the trails, clearing brush around the K60 and K90 scaffold structures and elsewhere around Suicide Bowl, mowing ski trails, clearing tall grass and weeds from the landing of the K90 and K60 ski jumps, and modifying some terrain features of the ISC SkiPark.

Over the Summer and early Fall, young ISC Nordic combined skiers trained at the Suicide Bowl complex, and traveled to compete in Central Division summer camps and tournaments in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illi-nois. ISC Nordic combined skier Timothy Ziegler spent the summer in Colorado and Utah training with the USA Nordic Fly Guys program, and competing in Nordic combined competitions in Steamboat Springs, CO, and at the Springer Tournee/U.S. Nationals in Park City, UT. In August he was invited, and accepted the invi-tation, to train on European big hills and rollerski with a USA Nordic group in Austria and Slovenia. Mean-while, high school and middle school-age ISC cross country skiers met and completed rollerski, running, and strength training as a group several times a week throughout the summer.

The winter ski jumping/Nordic combined season kicks off December 7, 2019, at the Winter Start/U.S. Cup/Junior World Qualifier competition in Steamboat Springs, CO. The start of the local high school/middle school cross country ski season will likely be that same weekend, though due a last minute cancellation the event date and location has yet to be determined.

The ISC is looking forward to a busy winter season with: new and im-proved ISC Youth and Junior Ski Jumping/Nordic Combined Programs, Youth and Junior Cross Country Ski Programs, hosting two Marquette County Cup cross country ski races, the 133rd Annual ISC International Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Tournament (which is also a Five Hills Tour event, a U.S. Cup event, and the third 2019-20 Junior World Qualifi-er), and a Junior Ski Jumping & Nordic Combined Tournament.

We’re almost off and skiing on another winter ski season!

Think snow.

Annual Ski Swap

Page 7

Club Suits Re-Order

Fall 2019

The Superiorland Ski club is pleased to present their annual Ski Swap on Saturday, November 16h at the Sands Township Hall (located next to the Crossroads Restraunt). Purchase used cross country ski gear including classic and skate skis, boots, poles, or sell your used equipment. Local retailers also attend with great deals on new equipment.

There will be good deals on kids and adult cross country ski equipment, and experienced club members will be on hand to help with advice and fitting equipment. It’s also the place to buy and sell snow bikes and snow bike gear!

The Ski Swap is a popular Marquette event, and the best equipment goes fast, so it pays to join the ski club. Club members get an early entry into the Swap, at 10:30, before the general public entry at 11:00. There will be an opportunity to join the club at the Swap beginning at 9:00, when equipment drop-off begins. Proceeds from the Ski Swap benefit the youth ski programs of the Superiorland Ski Club, and it’s one of the best ways to get ready for the upcoming ski season and to get excited for another U.P. winter. Please note that we only accept cash or credit cards. We hope to see you there!

Again this year we are planning to use online registration. This worked quite well last year and made member tracking and list management tasks a lot easier to manage. We will be using a dif-ferent program that will be more user friendly. To register visit www.superiorlandskiclub.com and click on the “Register” button and follow the prompts. Both registration for memberships and youth programs can be taken care of at this website. Please remember that club memberships are re-quired to participate in youth programs; when registering you will click on both links provided. Pro-gram scholarships are available on a limited basis. Please contact your program coordinator or coach for more information. We want to get as many kids out skiing as possible!

Blueberry Ridge Update Fall 2019

Van Riper and Craig Lake State Parks are saying goodbye to fall and hello to winter! The time has come to get the trails ready for the busy ski season ahead at Blueberry Ridge Ski Pathway. By the time snow flies, the parking areas will have gravel added and be graded, along with the Warming Hut lot being expanded to the woods line. The lighting along the Lighted Loop will also be upgraded to LEDs. We hope you are as excited about the changes and coming season as we are!

The park has undergone some changes this year as well, particularly in relation to staffing. Debra Gill was officially hired as the Unit Supervisor for both parks. Upon completion of that process, Ryan Brown was brought on board as the new Lead Ranger, filling Deb’s vacated position. With some new faces around, we felt it was appropriate to introduce you to our groomers for the season.

While Ryan is new to the unit, he has plenty of knowledge of both the area and grooming! Born and raised in the UP, he lives for the cold and snow of winter. Photography is one of his absolute favorite pastimes, and the winter gives a whole new beauty to the landscape for him. Commonly seen around on his snowshoes in the snowy months, he also enjoys snowmobiling, which is where his grooming experience comes in. He has been riding snowmobiles since he was a baby and seeing the groomer on the trails still is one of his favorite things. Channeling this passion and wanting to help give back to the rest of the snowmobiling community, he spent the previous two winters operating groomers out of Seney, MI. He is excited to take the knowledge gained there and learn the subtle differences in laying out the perfect track for skiers now.

Matena Coron, a ranger since 2009, enjoys the challenge and variety of tasks and projects that arise working for the Parks & Recreation Division. In 2014, she took on the full-time responsibility of grooming the trails at Blueberry Ridge. Part of that challenge included learning new equipment, trail layouts, and the joy of groom-ing the hairpin corners and hills on Wildcat. Her favorite part of grooming is when it’s snowing and seeing the fresh corduroy behind the groomer. If she had her way, it would snow 3-4 inches every day before going out! Although, still qualifying herself as a novice, she enjoys classic skiing in her free time and hopes to be able to ski on the trails more this winter.

Matena will continue to be the primary groomer, with an assist from Ryan when needed. In February, we will be giving an opportunity for Van Riper’s other two rangers, Kyle Loup and Brian Krease, to try their hand at grooming, along with getting to know the trails and equipment. Thank you for all your support at Blueberry Ridge and we look forward to seeing you on the trails this winter!

September 14th, 2019 marked the 25th Anniversary of The Lake Superior Shore Run. New and veteran par-ticipants, ages 3 to 91, came out to support this great event and fundraiser for the club’s youth programs. It was a runner’s dream with a beautiful sunrise and crisp fall air, and the scenic course, friendly volunteers, and enthusiastic participants did not disappoint. We had a great turnout of nearly 300 participants who raced the Half Marathon, 5km Run, 5 Mile Hike, and the 1km Youth Run. On top of this, we had an incredible crew of volunteers--most who help pull off this event year after year: course crew-Greg Nelson, Sten Fjeldheim, Andy Keller, Mik Kilpela, Tom Asmus, and Dan Wiitala. Aide Station set up: Jim Argeropoulos, and Gary Wurtz. Anthem singers Mike Lempinen and Rick Kauppila; Aide Station volunteers from Coach Heidi Voigt’s NMU Swim and Dive Team, the youth skiers from SSC and Ishpeming Ski Club and parents and the finish line feed crew-- Gabby Hansen, Tiffany Ampe, Ingrid Lindquist, Laura Janowski and Claire Twohey; plus our registration crew: Brianna Argeropoulos, Emily Xu, Melissa Polkinghorne, John and Jen Bruggink, Karin Markey; and Parking crew-- Joe Ampe, Mike Twohey, Dick Ziegler, and Gary Wurtz; Sweeps-- Evan Bonsall, Ellen Wiitala, and Dick Z., Matt K. and Kevin Thomsen; Road Crossing attendants-- Melissa Pillifant, Stephane Malherbe, and Bill Stahl; 1km volunteers- Andrew Rickauer, Melissa Polking-horne, Peter and Monet Argeropoulos; and our DNR support crew-- headed up by DNR ranger Brian Krease; and of course, our fantastic UP Health Systems EMT Ambulance crew, headed by Curt LeSage and staff, as well as the Marquette Family Medi-cine Residency Program and the MSU medical students. Thank You! We couldn’t have pulled off such a great event without you! And lastly, we would like to thank again our 2019 Sponsors: Eagle Mine, Travel Marquette, Upper Peninsula Health Plan, Ad-vanced Center for Orthopedics, UP Holistic Medicine, Singletrack Health, Lower Harbor Family Dental, Pride Printing, North Jackson Company, Getz’ Clothiers, Queen City Running, Crappie coffee, VAST, Border Grill and the Mining Journal. Results can be viewed online at: Superiortiming.com Thank you all so much for making the 25th Anniversary of the Shore Run great!
