What is bullying? It’s being mean to someone on purpose, over and

over again. It can include teasing, talking about hurt-ing someone, spreading rumors, leaving another kid out on purpose, and attacking someone either with

your body or with your words.

If you know someone being bullied, stand up for them. Be kind to them,and tell an adult you trust about

the bully.

Meet Jaylen Arnold,

Bullying SUPERHERO!Our Superhero of the the Month for June is Jaylen Arnold. He is 12 years old and one of our featured superheroes in The Global Game Changers book. Jaylen started his own anti-bullying charity, Jaylen’s Challenge, when he was just 8 years old! Jaylen hopes to elminate bullying, especially against disabled kids.

Jaylen, why did you decide to start your charity, Jaylen’s Chal-lenge?I started the charity because I was a victim of bullying myself. I wanted to �nd a way to help kids that were still getting bullied.

You seem like such a cool kid - why was anyone bullying you?I am a disabled child who su�ers from Tourette's Syndrome (TS - a Neurological Disorder), Aspergers Syndrome (ASP - a broad spectrum Autism Disorder), and severe Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD - much more than just washing your hands or checking things over and over...believe me)! I have complex Tourette's which means I have vocal "tics" and motor "tics" pretty severly. They interrupt my daily living and are quite troubling. If you don't know what "tics" are just hang around and you'll soon �nd out. (No they are not the bugs - ticks) he!he! I also often yell out the word BAM! for no apparent reason.

When I moved to a new school, kids didn’t understand about my tics and some of them were very mean to me.

That doesn’t sound like very much fun.It wasn’t. My disorders got way worse with the stress. The doctors say my disorders cause me to have a lot of anxiety. I witnessed a lot of �ghting and meanness. I don't like �ghting. I was really scared for the other kids to see my "tics" and know that I was di�erent. I was trying so hard to hold them in. I would go to the hall and try to get them out. Eventually, I couldn't hold them in. It's like a big sneeze...you can hold it for a few seconds, but then it just blows out really hard. BAM! I was soon "ticcing" all day long. The other kids were copying my tics. My condition got so bad that I began hurting myself with my tics. I didn't mean to, but my stress and overstimulation was so bad that my "tics" got very hard. I was crying one night because I was hurting so bad, and when my mom saw how I was bruising myself from the tics, she took me out of school.

Sounds like your mom is a wonderful person. So where do you go to school now?I am now back at my old school. I love my school. Those kids don't bully or tease me. They love me for who I am and I want ALL kids to experience the same feeling. I am going to do my best to make that happen!

You’re lucky to have great friends at your old school. What would be your advice to kids who are getting bullied?If you’re a kid getting bullied, TELL someone and always stay with your friends. Bullies won’t bully 5 kids together. But keep telling until they take that kid out of that school and deal with them. Don’t hold it in like I did. My parents only found out because my Tourette’s got so bad and my mom had to keep taking me to all my doctors so much.

What do you want to say to kids who think they might be bullies?I think kids who are bullies don’t know any better. I told my mom “this is easy, someone just needs to tell all these bad kids”. Once kids are educated about it, they won't bully so much. I put it to the test with the class at the regular school I attended here for a few months. It was a huge success! You should have seen all the kids coming up to me that use to make fun and copy me. They were actually telling me they were sorry! The same boys that I was scared of! I felt like a special king or a movie star!

Hopefully from my work and the Global Game Changers, kids know about bullying and they won’t do it anymore. Here’s one �nal message: Sit down and stop bullying.

That’s a good message for all of us when we feel like being mean to other kids. Jaylen, thanks so much for checking in with us and for all the super and heroic work you do to stop bullying. We hope to hear “BULLYING NO WAY” around the world!

STOMP Out Bullying focuses on reducing and preventing bullying, cyber-bullying, sexting and other digital abuse, educating against homophobia, racism and hatred, decreasing school absenteeism, and deterring violence in schools, online and in communities across the country. It teaches effec-tive solutions on how to respond to all forms of bullying; as well as educat-ing kids and teens in school and online, providing help for those in need and at risk of suicide, raising awareness, peer mentoring programs in schools, public service announcements by noted celebrities, and social media campaigns. An additional focus educates parents on how to keep their children safe and responsible online.

BeatBullying is all about young people helping and supporting each other online. If you're being bullied, or are feeling a bit low, or are maybe troubled by something and you're not sure what to do or who to talk to, then BeatBullying is where you can go for help. It doesn't matter how big or small you think the problem is, or whether you're being targeted online or offline, our Mentors are here to listen and support you.

Charities That Fight Bullying

Jaylen’s Challenge’s mission is to educate the educators, teach tolerance to the tormentors and banish bullying for all. Jaylens Challenge is to end childhood bullying, especially those with disabilities. Our motto is “Bullying No Way” and we have yellow and blue wristbands. Even some celebrities wear them.

Give each guest an ingredient.
