Highly effective COIL collaborations requirean active learning approach that supportsstudents’ online professionalism, projectmanagement and development ofintercultural skills. COIL Foundationsprovides tools that you can use to developand facilitate a successful and rewardingCOIL collaboration for you and yourstudents. You will examine issues of culture, language,virtual team building, partnership and theimportance of reflection to develop skills. Wewill specifically address how to supportstudents’ intercultural skills online,considerations for finding and maintaining astrong relationship with your COIL teachingpartner, when and how to use reflectionactivities, options and approaches tobridging language differences, and how toapproach team building and developingtrust.

COIL opens a world of possibilities foractive, applied, collaborative activitiesthat interest and motivate studentswhile invigorating your teachingpractice. Making good design choicesfor your COIL Collaboration takescareful consideration and an openmind. At the end of this workshop you should have

a blueprint of your COIL Collaboration, readyfor implementation. Topics will include COILpedagogy and flow, developing common andcourse-specific goals, setting expectations forpartners and students, logistical aspects,designing your COIL activities, assessment,and troubleshooting. This workshop will bringtogether topics from COIL Foundations andCOIL Elements and apply them to yourparticular COIL Collaboration. Both teachingpartners should take the COIL Designworkshop at the same time.

You’ve found your partner, you’veconsidered your options, and nowyou’re ready to design your COILCollaboration. The COIL Designworkshop will walk you and yourteaching partner through eachpart of the development process.

Preparing students to work with peers inanother country online can enrich theexperience and help ensure its success. TheCOIL Elements workshop explores whatmakes a compelling COIL Collaboration, rolesof students and professors, online behavior,creating active student teams, matchingtechnology choices to activity design,preparing students for COIL, and developingyour COIL resource bank.

COIL Coordinator Workshop Administrator Workshop Study Abroad Goes VirtualCOIL Coordinators are the point people forCOIL at their institution. This designationrequires Coordinators to be veryknowledgeable about COIL and to know whatother resources are available to supportprofessors at their university. The COILCoordinator Workshop is designed to helpCoordinators develop the tools they need tosupport COIL at their institution. Topics includedetermining institutional assets that supportCOIL, aligning institutional goals with COILoutcomes, working with administrators fromacross campus, cultivating and supportingprofessors, preparing students for their COILexperience, and helping if problems arise.

This three-week, facilitated workshop isdesigned to guide professors through theprocess of transforming an existing faculty-ledstudy abroad program into an interactive andengaging online experience. This workshop isnot focused exclusively on COIL, but examinesvarious options for transforming an existing orplanned program into virtual study abroad.Participants should come with a syllabus, on-site plans, and learning outcomes.

The COIL Administrator Workshop is for anystaff supporting COIL at an institution, such asDeans, Teaching and Learning staff,Instructional Designers, International Educators,Department Chairs, etc. COIL Coordinators mayalso join this workshop, particularly if otheradministrators from their campus will beparticipating. This workshop explores theresponsibilities of each role in supportingsuccessful COIL Collaborations, as well asreviewing considerations for scaling COIL at aninstitution. Topics include finding andsupporting teaching partnerships for COILcollaborations, creating engaging COIL activities,technology tools for COIL, supportingintercultural learning online and orientingstudents for COIL success.
