We hold high expectations for every student and would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support. Your partnership continues to enable our students t o experience rigorous academic, physical, and emotional growth. To continue to support your child at home, please read together every evening. Students who read nightly improve vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension skills. Please ask your child about their third quarter reading goal. The reading goal is recorded in your child's planner. Each Sunset student is expected to read at least 25 books each school year. In addition, we ask that you review math facts with your child daily to build math fluency. Instant recall of addition, subtract, and multiplication fact is necessary so that students can effectively solve multi-step math problems. Arriving to school on time and maintaining excellent attendance is also essential to attain successful academic performance. Daily attendance is very important in regard to the academic, social, and emotional success of our students. If a student does not attend school regularly they have a more difficult time achieving their potential. If your child is absent, please send a written excuse within three days after he/she returns explaining the absence. In addition, send a doctors note after five consecutive days of absence. Likewise, provide a written excuse when your child is tardy to school. Please note, family vacations are unexcused absences. Due to interactive instruction within the curriculum it may not be possible for the teacher to provide written assignments following an absence. This year our students continue to have opportunities to learn through inquiry and an integrated curriculum. This month our top three science fair projects from each class in grades 3-5 will compete in our Sunset Science Fair. Top winners from each of those grades will represent our school in the County Science Fair later in the year. Grades PreK – 2 completed a class project to learn the scientific process and how we ask questions about the world around us. Those projects will be on display during the school-wide fair, February 11 th 14 th . We appreciate all the support from parents, teachers, and the PTA in promoting the inquiry learning process. Also, we wish to congratulate our Dance Team who represented our school on January 28 th , at North County High School at the Anne Arundel County Dance Festival. Finally, please help us continue to maintain a safe, orderly, and healthy school environment during arrival and dismissal. In recent weeks the number of car riders has increased with colder temperatures. Please maintain the established traffic pattern in the lower parking lot. Do not enter the parking lot in the wrong direction or exit against incoming traffic. Also, have your children prepared to exit your vehicle when reaching the designated drop off signs so that traffic flows smoothly. Thank you for your continued support. We are almost ready for the school Science Fair!

Students have been completing projects, presenting their work, and listening to classmates as

scientific research and engineering designs are shared. Teachers will move the top 3 projects

from their classes forward to compete in the Sunset Elementary School Science Fair. The school

fair is held during the week of February 12th. Winners from the school fair will be announced at

the School Science Assembly on Friday, February 16th. Our top winners from grades 3, 4, and 5

will be invited to represent Sunset Elementary School at the County Innovators of Science and

Engineering Fair in May.

This year, our science assembly is called, “Fizz, Pop, Boom!” by the Science Guys of Baltimore.

Thank you to all the parents who supported the Science Fair this year!

Pre-Kindergarten February Unit of Inquiry: How We Organize Ourselves Central Idea: Communities are organized to help them function.

February Unit Highlights: Healthy Habits: Healthy food, exercise & hygiene habits. Looking Ahead to March: Sharing the Planet We will be discussing Earth and how we can take care of our Earth. Cultural Arts Connections: Media: We will be actively listening to the story, Henry’s Heart, and learn how our heart functions and what it needs to function in a healthy way - exercise and healthy foods.

Ways to Connect at Home: Ask your child: What are some healthy foods you like to eat for meals or snack, here at home? Take your child to the grocery store and have them help you shop for healthy treats. Find a family friendly workout, where everyone can participate. Ways to Connect with School: Work on your February healthy habits calendar at home.

Kindergarten February Unit of Inquiry: Where We Are in Place and Time Central Idea: Community helpers provide goods and services which influence the places we live.

February Unit Highlights: We will be finishing our unit on communities by showcasing our knowledge through the creation of a community mural. Looking Ahead to March: Kindergarten will then be moving on to unit 4: How the World Works. We will be inquiring about animals, insects and dinosaurs and finding our answers through an animal research project. Cultural Arts Connections: Spanish: Students will be exploring maps & directional words

Ways to Connect at Home : Ask your child: What type of community do you live in? Why are communities different? What type of people help in our community? 2nd Grade February Unit of Inquiry: How the World Works Central Idea: Changes in the earth affect and connect with one another.

February Unit Highlights: Solids and liquids Slow and Quick Changes Natural Disasters Science Center Field Trip Looking Ahead to March: Students will be creating and trading natural disaster trading cards. Cultural Arts Connections: Music: Students will be working on percussion based sounds of natural disasters. In library media classes we will read aloud an Ezra Jack Keats new author and illustrator award book titled, Crown, an ode to the Fresh Cut. We will connect this story to African-American history and discover the artist skills of barbers. Author, Derrick Barnes writes about a fresh cut, “It hooks up your intellectual.”

Ways to Connect at Home: Discuss changes you see in solids and liquids when cooking or with weather. Check out books at your local library about natural disasters. Ways to Connect with School: Have you ever experienced a natural disaster? If you have, please reach out to your child’s teacher! We would love to hear all about it!

3rd Grade February Unit of Inquiry: Sharing the Planet Central Idea: The past helps us guide our future.

February Unit Highlights: We will be looking at all things WEATHER! We will look at different forms of weather as well as different tools used to measure weather. Looking Ahead to March: We will study weather related hazards and how people work together when they strike! Cultural Arts Connections: In Spanish: Students will be learning vocabulary of clothing for different types of weather.

Ways to Connect at Home: Consider watching the evening news during the weather segments. Have a discussion with students about appropriate clothing during various types of weather. Discuss as a family ways to be prepared during inclement weather. Can you measure weather at home? Do you have a thermometer? A ruler to measure snow? Ways to Connect with School: Do you know someone who is a meteorologist? We would love to have weather experts in to talk to our students! Please email your child’s teacher to arrange!

4th Grade February Unit of Inquiry: Where We are in Place and Time Central Idea: Government changes to meet the needs of its people.

February Unit Highlights: Key events and historical figures (causation), role of culture in government (change), how personal beliefs influence conflict (perspective). Looking Ahead to March: sound energy, electrical energy, transfer of energy Cultural Arts Connections: Art-students will make a Maryland state symbol lighthouse.

Ways to Connect at Home: Ask your child: Why was the Maryland Colony established? How were early settlements in the Maryland Colony both similar and different? Ways to Connect with School: Teachers will impose a new tax on eating lunch for students.

5th Grade February Unit of Inquiry: How the World Works Central Idea: Humans can use the natural laws of matter and energy to create, sustain, and transform life on Earth.

February Unit Highlights: How do we describe matter? How do living things and the environment work together? How do humans use their understanding of science to make technological advances? Looking Ahead to March: Exhibition! Cultural Arts Connections: In library media classes students will practice finding resources to answer research questions, take notes and cite their sources in order to prepare for their upcoming Exhibition.

Ways to Connect at Home: Ask your child: How can we describe objects? What are the 4 spheres of Earth? How do the spheres of Earth interact with each other? In what ways do humans use technology to solve problems? Ways to Connect with School: Be on the lookout for information about ways to get involved with Exhibition.

Spanish Review 2018

BIENVENIDOS!- Welcome back to Spanish

Dear Parents and Guardians.

I am pleased and lucky to teach PYP Spanish from PK through Fifth grade during the 2018-2019 school year. I

have been meeting students once a week for 30 minutes. I have been having a lot of fun teaching at Sunset

Elementary. All kids are very receptive to learn a different language.

Some of the Topics in our past periods were:

PRE-KINDER AND KINDERGARTEN

Commands (Silence, seat down, raise your hand, Stand Up etc.…). Colors, some names of animals, greetings

and more…

FIRST GRADE

Colors, animals, presenting yourself (I am, my name is, I Like, I don’t Like, my age. Etc.…).

Feelings (I am sad, I am tired. Etc.…)

SECOND GRADE TO FIFTH GRADE

Animals, presenting yourself (I am, my name is, I like, my favorite…. is ). Feelings (I am sad, I am tired etc.…).

Classroom vocabulary (desk, pencil etc.…), commands (seat, silence, stand up, etc.), and more.

Note: My classes are very conversational and are much more than writing. I really encourage the students to

speak and practice our learned vocabulary. It is a blessing to have your Child(ren) in my Español class.

The camera covers selected interior and exterior public portions of the building and grounds. It is NOT monitored constantly, but it is monitored during emergency situations. During certain events, when the safety or security of students may be in question, authorized personnel from local, state, or federal police or fire emergency units may be given access to view images projected on the camera system.
