World Polio Day 2010 San Francisco – Which one is real?
On Saturday, October 25, thousands of Bay Area Rotarians were joined by RI President, Ray
Klinginsmith, on a cold, windy and rainy day in San Francisco to bring attention to our goal to
END POLIO NOW. Several of our club members were there and wonderful day of fun and
fellowship was followed by the lighting of the San Francisco Ferry Building Clock Tower with the
End Polio Now slogan and Rotary Logo. Can you guess which picture is the real one?

Rotary Rose Parade Float
This will be the Float Committee’s 32nd
consecutive entry in the Tournament of Roses
Parade. The theme of the 2011 parade is:
Building Dreams, Friendships and Memories
closely paralleling the RI theme:
Building Communities, Bridging Continents.
Last year the Rotary Rose Parade Float
Committee was awarded the Volunteer Float
Trophy for the best use of floral arrangements
for a float of 35 feet or less. The float is not a
project of Rotary International, and no Rotary
International funds are used in the building or
promotion of the float. The ability to enter a
float is dependant solely on the generosity of
Rotarians and friends. Our club is donation $3
per member to the project.
Over 800 volunteers will donate in excess of
6000 hours of their time in the preparation and
decoration of the float which is made up of
natural materials: flowers, seeds, husks and
leaves. Members of Rotary, Rotaract, and
Interact clubs, and their family and friends work
on the float. The volunteers come from all over
the United States and Canada.
RI President Ray Klinginsmith will ride on the
float proclaiming his theme:
Building Communities, Bridging Continents.
There is no better way to promote Rotary than
with a beautiful float in the 122nd Tournament
of Roses Parade on January 1, 2011. The
parade will be televised worldwide and viewed
by more than 300 million people in more than
200 countries.

Why attend an international convention?
Why attend another Rotary Event and hear more Rotary
speakers?
To answer this question, I will share some of my
experiences about a Convention that brings Rotarians
from all over the world together.
The first day Plenary Session included the Rotary
International President and the parade of flags. This
parade consists of the flag of every country that has a
Rotary Club in it. The flag is carried by a boy
scout. The entertainment at every plenary session is
unforgettable. Day one included the Celtic Thunder. A
wonderful group of singers and musicians.
The second day Plenary Session featured a Rotarian
from the Philippines that has changed the lives of street
children in his country. The second speaker was Greg
Mortenson. He is the author of "Three Cups of Tea:
and "Stones into Schools". He spoke on how education
can bring about world peace.
The third day Plenary Session included Jo Luck, the
woman that runs Heifer International. Heifer
International supplies heifers to families in need giving
them a livelihood and a means of support. Our next
speaker was her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan.
The fourth day Plenary Session started with Bob
Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive, Boy Scouts of
America. He gave us the history of the Boy Scouts and
how it all got started. He gave us a very positive report
about the good health of Scouting in today’s world. Our
next speaker and entertainer was none other than
DOLLY PARTON. She sang for us and told us about
her "Imagination Library" and all the good work the
Dolly Pardon Foundation is doing. Dolly did not
disappoint. She came out in a skin tight white dress
with fringe and her trademark big blond hair etc. etc.
I sat next to and chatted with a fellow Rotarian from
Nigeria. I met a woman from Malawi who was also
named Florence (after her grandmother). Everyone
traded pins and flags. The Plenary Sessions only last
from 9AM until 11:30. The rest of the day was free to
enjoy the House of Friendship which features the best
of the Rotary projects from around the world and to
enjoy Montreal. Next years Convention will be held in
New Orleans in May. Please consider attending. It is a
wonderful experience that should not be missed. Yours
in Rotary, Flo Stafford
