This year ballots will consist of candidates for 4 Board of Director positions and the dates to meet the candidates are: January 31st 2019 at 7:00 pm and February 5th, 2019 at 1:00 pm. Both meetings will be held in the Oakwood Room. Sunland Village East has contracted with Vote HOA Now to conduct our electronic voting for those residents with an e-mail address on file and for residents without e-mail capabilities, voting will be “Manually” as we have done in the past. Please be sure your e-mail address is on file in the HOA Office. Vote HOA Now is a full- service voting management company. Dedicated to providing voting capabilities to HOA Communities (only) throughout the country. Information on Vote HOA Now’s capabilities and services can be found at www.votehoanow.com. BOB GRAZIANO My name is Bob Graziano and I have lived in SVE since March 2015. My wife Marie and I reside at 7820 E. Nopal. My HOA experience includes working with two Boards in Colorado. One was in an established community and the other was in a new sub-division. I am currently the president of the Alpine Heights HOA in Payson, AZ, and have held this position for over four years. My business experience includes owning and running a successful security company for over 27 years. In addition to interacting with customers, controlling expenses, negotiating contract and inventory control were also part of my job. While living in Sun Lakes, I attended the HOA Academy, a class for Board members and candidates. The most important thing I learned in that six week class and what it stressed the most, was that the boards’ job is to do what is best for the community. And that is my agenda, to keep our community active and attractive to potential buyers. “We’ve always done it like that” is not in my vocabulary. At the present time there, are no issues before the board. Everything is running smooth and I plan on keeping it that way. As I said earlier I do not have a personal agenda except for doing what is best for the community. My wife and I love living in SVE and I want to keep it a most desirable place to live. Come to one or both “Meet the Candidates” nights, ask questions and learn more. In advance I thank you for your vote. BOB THEILEN SVE: Gracious living for seniors where the quality of life is high and the cost of living is not! Our HOA board is the most elementary form of community government. It has a responsibility of equally protecting each members’ quality of life. As a board, our decisions must focus on using logic and common sense with respect for all residents. We need to concern ourselves with how those decisions will affect our community now, as well as in the future. It is important to remember that our HOA has no source of income except for the money it takes from you, the members. We must be careful not to waste it. I will insist that all expenditures be thoroughly itemized, justified, and competitively quoted. Our maintenance policy will be quality before quick fixes. Properly maintaining our facilities will protect our quality of life and our property values. This must be done responsibly, without continually raising our association dues. Experience: Member, Planning and Advisory Board, southern Minnesota.. Chairperson, Housing and Community Development committee, southern California. Senator, International Junior Chamber of Commerce. Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, Minnesota State University. Employment: Retired from 3M Corporation as a National Accounts Sales Manager. My wife Joan and I purchased a home in SVE in January of 2005. I have no personal agenda or special interest that I want to promote. My primary interest is simply to do what is best to represent all SVE residents. Common sense for the common good. CANDACE MASQUELIER In looking around Sunland Village East, I believe there is much for which we can be grateful. We have a vibrant community that is well- run and provides many enjoyable ways to spend our days and live out our retirement. The variety of amenities, groups and clubs gives us opportunities to be as active as we wish. The most recent Board has accomplished much that we can all be proud of including the refurbishing of the tennis courts, reroofing of the Mesa Verde building, a new air conditioner and upgrading of the electrical and audiovisual in the auditorium, redoing of the decking and the addition of a fountain and plantings at the north pool, and too many continued maintenance items to list. Upcoming projects are the construction of the pickleball courts, upgrading security systems, continued research and development for the proposed fiber arts facility, upgrading of the bathrooms and outdoor showers at the south pool with similar future plans at the north pool, additional fitness center equipment, proposed updating of our bylaws and RCC&Rs, and various additional maintenance items. In any community of our size and age, much needs to be accomplished every year to maintain an attractive and appealing place to live as well as promote and enhance our property values. It is the responsibility of the SVE HOA Board of Directors to view long-range possibilities and make decisions in order to accomplish these goals. I would like to continue this work by serving another two-year term on the Board. BEVERLY EFNOR I would like to introduce myself, I am Beverly Efnor. I have lived in Sunland Village East for 7 years. I am a homeowner and participate in activities provided by the village such as: cribbage, neighbor card playing on Sunday nights, pool activities and activities at the auditorium. I offer skills of management, leadership, and a good ear to listen. In watching our village grow and beautify its surroundings, it has shown we have experienced good leadership. The key to my success in life is common sense and the strength to help others. I feel I could do a good job for our community. Past experience in the work force was area manager for a staffing company. I offer supervisor skills, loan officer skills and the ability to work with people. I developed and opened my own business and ran it for four years. This business was an ole fashion ice parlor/restaurant which is still in existence. I served on the Park and Recreation Board for the City of Bondurant for one year. I was involved with the Recreation Board for the high school of Bondurant. I organized for five years the senior Thanksgiving Dinner sponsored by the Boy Scouts and participated in Boy Scout functions. Raised 2 sons and 2 nieces, I have 6 lovely grandchildren and 5 grand dogs. KEVIN VAN PELT I am Kevin Van Pelt, age 64, and have lived year round in Sunland Village East since October 2013. I retired May 2012 after 35 years of service to the Illinois State Police, Communication Service Bureau. I have been very happily married to my wife Renee for 40 years. In my spare time, I enjoy volunteering with Maricopa County Parks and Recreation at Usery Mountain Regional Park. I serve as a BOD liaison and chairperson of the SVE (ACC) Architectural Control Committee. SVE was chosen as our retirement home for many reasons. It is affordable and well maintained. It offers richness in social events, clubs, activities, and recreational opportunities for very affordable HOA dues. I see many instances of neighbor helping neighbor producing a solid community with values, ethics, and patriotism. It is these values that I wish to maintain, encourage, and see flourish. My whole life I have operated as an open, transparent and honest individual. I believe my last two years of BOD service to SVE have been witness to this statement. My internal conventionalities have not changed or will they be compromised by anyone or anything. I will work hard for the betterment of our community. I will see that the quality of life we enjoy here stays on course while working to make SVE inviting and appealing for future younger residents, just as I found it in 2012. We must strive to stay in touch with changing times and remain appealing to those who follow. There are many housing opportunities for the 55+ generation in Mesa. We must work to keep SVE at the top of that list. Thanks to each and every resident who has placed their trust in me the last two years. If re-elected, I promise to continue working for all SVE residents. Continued on page 15

CHAPEL NOTESRichard Koerselman

When I grew up in Iowa corn country, a half century ago, plowing the fields for spring planting was an annual ritual.

I liked plowing. I couldn’t wait to go out into fields and plow. Rolling coulters, razor-like disks, located at the front end of the plow would cut into the earth so the three plowshares could turn over the dirt.

Today in much of the Midwest, the age of the plow is over. The disk, a piece of machinery with dozens of steel disks, chews up the earth, but it doesn’t really turn the soil over very well. The result is a field that looks like its hardly been prepared for planting and seeding.

Today, there is another kind of plow which is in danger of being thrown on the scrap heap. It’s the spiritual plow; the kind of plow people of faith use to go deep into their souls where God dwells.

Our prayers are usually packed with petitions like “Help me” and “Give me,” “Deliver me.” We need to meditate in prayer; not always be petitioning God. It will give us spiritual food that will last a long time.

David encourages us in Psalm 23 to lie down in green pastures and rest beside still waters. Still water runs deep and it’s quiet. . . .an ideal place to rest and refresh our souls.

First, we’d like to wish you and yours all a Happy New Year from the pancake group! I hope you had the chance to meet Tony Rasberry, our incoming coordinator.

Our January pancake breakfast was a great success. We had 623 guests at our breakfast! After expenses we had a net profit of $2044.90 which was an increase of $467.90 from last month.

It was great to have our regular volunteers back and to see a number of new volunteers both in the kitchen and dining room. Our heartfelt thanks to all of volunteers- we couldn’t do this without you!

A New Reverse Mortgage from Sun American

Mortgage Offers a Brighter Outlook on Retirement!Don’t Be One of the AmericansMore Afraid of Retirement &Healthcare Costs than Death.

This material is not provided by, nor was it approved by the Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) or by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA).

When Kate and Eric were young, they never would have believed that they would end up being more afraid of retirement and healthcare costs than death, but there are a lot of things about life they didn’t expect. They didn’t expect that they’d have 17 grandchildren or travel to all 50 states. Most of the things they didn’t expect to see happen in their lifetime, turned out to be great. But the rising costs of healthcare…wasn’t great. Kate and Eric weren’t looking forward to retiring. In fact, they were downright scared of it.

But when Eric’s brother came to visit, he couldn’t wait to tell them how awesome it was to be retired. Luckily, he wasn’t just bragging. He was introducing Kate and Eric to the perfect solution to their biggest fears: a reverse mortgage from Sun American Mortgage Company.

A reverse mortgage line of credit meant Kate and Eric could take money in and out of their home without recourse. They could make payments on their reverse mortgage, but only

if they wanted to. No payment was required. And the reverse mortgage provided them with all the options and fl exibility that they needed – right when they needed it.

Many Americans are more afraid of retirement and health care costs than they are of death. Don’t be one of them! Find out how Sun American Mortgage Company has been assisting seniors just like you for over 25 years. Call Parker Turk or Rex Duffi n at Sun American Mortgage

FITNESS CENTERDiane Loram

There is great news at both fitness centers. Several new machines were approved

in the 2019 SVE HOA budget. If all has gone as planned (remember these articles are written a month in advance) the following changes are in place as your read this article.

Several months ago the Octane elliptical at the north center

malfunctioned and was removed. It will soon be replaced with a SciFit Rex 7001-INT, a total body recumbent elliptical. The SciFit Pro 1 upper body exerciser and the SciFit ISO 1000R recumbent bike are being replaced with a SciFit Pro 2 which is an upper body exerciser and lower body recumbent bike combined in one machine.

A rowing machine was added to the south fitness center. The TV in the South Fitness Center has been remounted, and the storage shelf was anchored to the wall so the ballet barre could be mounted to it. The DVD player has been installed.

What’s next? If you have yoga, Swiss ball exercise, or other fitness DVDs you want to donate, please contact Diane Loram at [email protected]. In addition, we are looking for health and fitness books for the South Fitness Center.

If you are a FaceBook user, please ask to join the Sunland Village East Fitness Club group. It is a place to share healthy recipes, exercise routines, pool exercises, etc. and look for people to join you in walks, hikes, runs, bike rides, etc. Together we grow stronger and healthier.

There will also be 50/50 raffles with a drawing at the end of each hour; you must be present to win the 50/50 raffle. Auction item tickets will be drawn at the end of the event; winners do not need to be present.

Squares can be shared and have been selling fast in anticipation of the Feb. 3rd Super Bowl play off. The grid numbers will be drawn at the pickleball courts; date and time to be announced on Person to Person. We are hoping to make this an annual fun event.

Beginner and intermediate lessons remain popular at the pickleball courts. There were 16 intermediate and 32 beginner participants in November, 2018. SOFTBALLAl Ludwig

January saw a very successful completion of the first month of the winter softball season. The Sunland Village Softball Club fielded seven teams. Our resident team members have competed in recreational play, competitive play, very competitive play, ladies’ competitive league, and on national competing teams. A few resident players have joined several international competing teams. Our ladies’ team features ladies (dare we say) from the low 50’s in age to 85! On some men’s teams, the age range is from 55 to the mid 70’s in age. However, the 75+ team has seven players over 80 and one player who is 93! (He often runs for the younger players). With a wide range of levels of competition and openings for all skill level players, the club welcomes all residents to participate!

The Softball Club would like to thank all of the fans who have come by the softball field to support our teams and encourage everyone to attend our upcoming Hamburger Bash on the 21st of February. It is through fundraisers like this that we are able to maintain our field, make improvements, and provide this recreational activity for our residents.

TENNIS TALKDorothy Danielson

December was a busy month for tennis club members. The Social Committee did a wonderful job of the Christmas party; a delicious prime rib dinner followed by an evening of dancing to DJ and the Midnight Sun. Several club members took part in the annual Christmas parade. Our membership again worked in conjunction with Woodshop to host a successful spaghetti dinner. Hank’s Bikes for Tots was well supported by our membership. The Holiday Mixed Doubles Tournament was a huge success with many of our members taking part in the play along with a good turnout of players from the other EVSTL clubs. As usual the membership came through in a big way, volunteering wherever necessary to make the tournament run smoothly.

Most notable for January was the grand opening of our beautiful new facility. Jan. 12 marked the official opening of the new courts with self-guided tours aided by the Court Renovation Committee standing by to answer any questions; The courts were filled with players enjoying the new facilities; the social committee provided refreshments, followed by the official ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony. A thank you to the HOA, as well as the generous donors, who made the court update possible.

Weekly league play and practice continues at each level and notably a new teaching/practice level has been added for beginners/rusty rackets Wed. at 2:30. Excellent coaches, rackets available. The majority of our players didn’t start playing tennis until retirement. It’s not too late for you!

CLUBSBOOK CLUB

Pam MoserOn January 8, 2019, we had a great discussion on Prayers

for Sale by Sandra Dallas. She writes about friendship, human dignity, survival, forgiveness and redemption. Most of her novels are set in the mountains of Colorado with a strong emphasis on quilting, and the comfort and companionship it brings the women who live in Middle Swan, CO.

Eighty-six year old Hennie Comfort doesn’t sell her prayers but offers them free to Nit Spindle and others who ask. The reader will experience Nit and Hennie getting to know each other and becoming best friends.

Our book club has a wide variety of thoughts to share about the books we read, which makes for lively discussions.

Please join us on the 1st Tuesday of February, the 5th, for a discussion on The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See.

DRAMA CLUBConnie Young

Rehearsals have started for our upcoming plays. The Drama Club is presenting two one act plays that will keep you laughing and on the edge of your seat the entire evening. At our first run through, we could hardly keep a straight face because of the clever dialogue . We all have been challenged to dress the stage ourselves . Our director usually does that, but she decided we needed the experience of finding the furniture and props that we need. We are all digging through our closets and homes and perusing antique stores and thrift stores looking for that just right piece of furniture or prop.

The two short plays highlight the theatrical prowess and high jinx of the group. Off with His Head demonstrates the follies of a husband’s tomfoolery when it involves pumpkins, costumes and a large knife. The second play, Any body for Tea, shows how far a group of over-zealous elderly women will go to get a handsome detective to visit their home. Their plan proves to be a bit dangerous- even deadly - to at least one of the home’s residents .

Performances are scheduled February 27th in the SVE auditorium. We are having a matinee at 3:00, and an evening performance at 7:00. The tickets are $3.00 and can be bought in the office or at the door.

If you’re interested in helping backstage we would love to have you join us .Questions , contact Darlene Dally 480-986-6985 or Vickie Briscoe 480-357-3942.

GENEALOGYBonnie Catton

The last genealogy meeting was on “Internet Genealogy”. Steve Packer was the presenter for our first meeting of the new year. Steve has been with the Family History Center since 2007. He provided an interesting program for obtaining many genealogy results. More and more of our

research is dependent on the internet. Thank you Steve Packer! Our February 20th the presenter will be Bev Bachman. Bev

is very skilled in Family Tree Maker. She will be sharing family research on American Revolution and her ancestor. Bev is sure to have some surprises up her sleeve.

Gary Van Valkenburg has also planned on time to clean out our cabinets. There are stacks of magazines collected through the years which may contain articles to aid in research. They will be spread out and may be taken to keep. What is left will be donated or recycled.

We welcome new members. Please join us as we learn and share our experiences exploring genealogy. New ideas are always welcome, and we meet the third Wednesday of the month, at 9 am in the Mesa Verde Room. October through April.

Hope to see you there!

KNITTING and CROCHETING GUILD

Patti McKenzieWinter is here and so are the snowbirds! Cool weather

activities, such as knitting and crocheting, are in full swing every Monday in the Ocotillo room at 9:30 am. Many fiber artists are making baby hats for Banner Children’s Hospital and hats for the homeless, along with garments of their own choosing. Free yarn is available for those donating items. Please join us!

Those who saw the movie Dealt, featuring Richard Turner as the Card Mechanic, visited with him and saw his show at SVE in January. We were inspired by his personality, card skills, and personal challenge—blindness. His sister, too, is a fiber artist, and also blind. She lives in SVE and is often found crocheting and quilting with the guilds. The proceeds benefited the Fiber Arts Center.

Once again, the guild is offering a beginning class in crocheting. The class will begin

January11th. A one time $5 fee will be charged. Various colors of yarn and a crochet hook will be available for your use. Learning and practicing the single crochet stitch will result in a potholder or hot pad. Please contact Belva Greenfield, 1-480-993-7246, if interested. Come and make new friends, learn a new craft, and create a useful item.

Lastly, we are sad to see one of our fellow knitters, Jan Rasmussen, move from SVE. A send-off party was held in her honor by the knitting and crochet family. Best wishes, Jan.
