SuniTAFE is your local provider of choice for vocational education and training in North West Victoria.

Located at the top of Victoria’s Food Bowl, SuniTAFE offers a huge range of certificates and diplomas, short courses, apprenticeships and traineeships. In fact, SuniTAFE offers over 350 courses covering 33 industries. You can study with us on-campus full time or part time, or off-campus, flexibly at home and in your workplace.

We have four Campuses located at Mildura, Swan Hill, Ouyen and Robinvale. SuniTAFE enrols almost 10,000 students annually. It’s a great local option for you to learn and live in this unique landscape of rivers and bushland as the gateway to the Australian outback.

Support Services

A range of free and confidential support services are available to students across all SuniTAFE campuses. Support services may be able to assist students with personal or study related matters before they create difficulties.

Koorie Advisory Unit Koorie Liaison Officers are based at Mildura, Swan Hill and Robinvale campuses to provide individual support, advice and assistance in all matters relating to students learning.

Student Support ServicesThe Student Support Services aims to facilitate a positive learning environment for students by providing free and confidential support, information, resources, counselling and referral services which meet their needs.

Disability? Impairment? Medical condition?SuniTAFE provides a range of services and adjustments to our learning environments, designed to lessen the impact of students disabilities or medical conditions on their studies.

After documentary evidence is supplied, students can also apply to have individual support and adjustments put in place.

This assistance ensures the student has opportunities, choices and challenges comparable with those offered to others.

Migrant Language Unit

SuniTAFE’s Migrant Language Unit provides English language tuition to adults from non-English speaking backgrounds. The English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are provided at various levels. They help students develop English language skills for survival needs, community access and enhanced employment opportunities.

Bookings must be made in advance as vacancies may be limited. Inspection of facilities is invited and inquiries welcomed.

Public Transport

The Mildura campus is directly serviced by routes 400 and 401 of Sunraysia Bus Lines (SuniTAFE’s stop is titled ‘Eleventh St and Benetook’).

The Swan Hill Campus is directly serviced by the ‘North Route’ of Swan Link Coachlines. For a printable timetable or more information, please visit their websites.

Learning Resource Centre

The Learning Resource Centre located at the Mildura campus includes a Library, Bookshop, Printroom and Videoconference Centre. The Library offers a range of resources to support all programs offered by SuniTAFE.

Skills Recognition

The Skills Recognition Centre can provide advice to help you select the course that’s right for you.

The Skills Recognition Centre will also help you convert your valuable formal education, work and life experience into formal nationally recognised skills.

Benefits of using Skills Recognition services:• Services are user friendly and supportive; • Complete a qualification more quickly;• You can obtain recognition of competency for specific units of a course or the entire course qualification;• You can commence the Skills Recognition process before or after you start training;• You can use Skills Recognition to increase employment opportunities or to continue with further education and training; and • It is probably easier than you think!

The Skills Recognition Centre will:• Guide you through your application;• Help you to interpret your prior experience; • Organise formal assessment of your application; • Follow up on your application to ensure timely service; and • Be available to address any concerns you might have throughout the process.

Accommodation

Make friends while you study and live on campus!SuniTAFE Student Residences at the Mildura campus on Benetook Avenue are a 30 minute walk from the Mildura city centre and a 5 minute walk from a small shopping complex.Accommodation is provided for up to 48 full-time residents studying at SuniTAFE or La Trobe University. There is also accommodation for short stays by SuniTAFE apprentices and trainees on block release and students studying at other educational institutions.The bedrooms for most residents are single or twin share. Short-stay apprentices and trainees stay in hostel style rooms with two sets of bunk beds. All non-hostel bedrooms have wardrobes, desks, chairs, and drawers for each resident. They also have bookshelves and a pin-board. All rooms are fully carpeted and have a reverse cycle air conditioner.

Visitors and GuestsVisitors and guests to SuniTAFE can be accommodated in the motel unit. The motel comprises 8 double bedrooms with ensuites, shared kitchen facilities and a meeting area. There is availability for larger group bookings during term and semester breaks in other units with communal kitchen, bathroom and lounge areas.

Canteen

The Canteen at the Mildura campus is open Monday to Friday for the purchase of a wide range of food and drinks. Evening meals may be purchased on request.

Child Care Centre

The Child Care Centre, TAFE Kids Inc. is located at the Mildura campus and caters for children aged between 6 weeks and 12 years.

The Centre provides age related educational activities including a developmental program for all ages. Also provided are morning and afternoon teas, nutritionally balanced meals, sleep facilities and nappies.

Direct Credit Transfer is also possible where you are transferring from a different course and have successfully completed the same or equivalent credentials.

SuniTAFE Farms

MilduraSuniTAFE operates a 30 hectare commercial horticultural property at Cardross including the Ag Lab and Lucerne Hill which are used for student training. Horticulture crops produced include wine grapes, dried vine fruit, citrus, stone fruit, avocados and vegetables. The property is well supplied with plant and equipment, has on-site classrooms, and staff and student facilities with state of the art irrigation technology installed.

Swan HillThe 108 hectare farm at Swan Hill has the potential for diverse horticultural and agricultural training with new industry partnered research.

Sustainability in Our Region

SuniTAFE is one of six partner Institutes in the National Centre for Sustainability which works with community partners to foster sustainable behaviour change.

The Sunraysia branch specialises in conservation and land management, renewable energy and community sustainability. The branch undertakes management of environmental projects including pest and weed control, revegetation and community capacity building.

International Focus

Deakin @ Your Doorstep - Swan Hill

SuniTAFE and Deakin University together with Chisholm Institute of TAFE and East Gippsland Institute of TAFE, have formed a unique partnership for the delivery of a joint program delivering diplomas in Children’s Services, Community Services Work and Accounting alongside the Deakin University Associate Degree of Arts, Business and Science. This program enables students to gain valuable vocational skills in the diploma course studied whilst building a pathway to Deakin University.

Key features include: • graduates guaranteed of the pathway to Deakin with up to 18 months credit in the course area; and• articulations into Bachelor of Education (Primary), Bachelor of Health Sciences, Bachelor of Management and Bachelor of Commerce.

This provides a unique opportunity for people to stay engaged in learning in the Swan Hill district and to build both vocational qualifications and skills together with the capacity to build a learning career with Deakin University.

Training Restaurant

Restaurant Délice is open to the community for lunch from March until October. Restaurant dates are scheduled at the start of each year. For further details visit www.sunitafe.edu.au

Restaurant Délice is also the venue of choice for graduations and other special events hosted by SuniTAFE.

The international student recruitment program continues to grow and develop. International students studying at SuniTAFE have travelled from China, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Vietnam and Thailand. Students study a variety of courses in industry areas such as automotive, commercial cookery, hospitality, production horticulture and wholesale nursery. English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS)

SuniTAFE is a provider of English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS).

Specialising in intermediate levels of English language study, staff can assist students to improve their English language skills and assist them to achieve the level of English they require for entry into studies with SuniTAFE, employment or other further study in Australia.

Pathways and Articulations

SuniTAFE courses can give your tertiary education a kick start allowing you to gradually begin higher education study in an excellent learning environment before moving onto University.

Some students choose to extend studies completed at SuniTAFE by applying to a related degree program at University and often gain Advanced Standing (credit) towards the degree.

SuniTAFE has a partnership with La Trobe University which is co-located on the Benetook Avenue campus in Mildura. We also have articulation pathways to Deakin University, Flinders University, Charles Sturt University, University of Ballarat, RMIT University, William Angliss Institute and Box Hill Institute.

Other students use SuniTAFE studies as an opportunity to demonstrate their academic potential should they feel their grades in prior studies - such as VCE - do not reflect this.

You can also progress to other courses within SuniTAFE, for example, on course completion of the Certificate II in Hospitality (Kitchen Operations) you may choose to go on to study the Certificate III in Hospitality (Commercial Cookery).

Centrally located in Benetook Avenue, the Mildura campus is home to the National Centre for Sustainability. The Koorie Cultural Centre - Dulka Yuppata is also located on campus as well as trade and business facilities and student residences. SuniTAFE operates a large production horticulture property that is also used for training purposes.

The Swan Hill campus features state of the art facilities and learning environments particularly in the hairdressing and trades areas and features automotive heavy vehicle trade education. Grow Your Career Day

Held annually Grow Your Career Days are aimed at Year 10, 11 and 12 students from across North West Victoria and South West NSW as the central informative career information expo.

The Career Days bring a broad selection of industries and employers together in one location to support your career decisions.

Open Day

Held annually Open Day is a fantastic opportunity to investigate the wide range of courses offered at SuniTAFE, tour the facilities and talk to specialist staff in your area of interest. Visitors to Open Day will be able to take advantage of the many displays that showcase learning at SuniTAFE.

Course Levels Explained

SuniTAFE offers training at many different levels which relate to the skills or qualifications needed to gain entry to positions in the workforce.

The following explains the differences between the levels and may help you select a course that suits your needs. Refer to individual programs for entrance requirements.

Advanced Diploma• requires completion of a secondary school certificate (or mature age) for entry;• two years full-time or equivalent part-time study; and

What is VET FEE-HELP?

VET FEE-HELP assists eligible and full fee-paying students undertaking approved VET courses to pay for all or part of their tuition costs.

You will repay the loan to the Australian Government through the tax system once you reach the minimum income threshold level for repayment, which for the 2009/2010 financial year is $43,150.

SuniTAFE is an approved VET FEE-HELP assistance provider. Students wishing to access VET FEE-HELP assistance are invited to discuss their eligibility with SuniTAFE.

• preparation for supervisory and middle management or for operating at a high level of expertise within a particular skill area.

Diploma• requires completion of a secondary school certificate (or mature age) for entry;• two years full-time or equivalent part-time study; and• self directed application of skills and knowledge with substantial depth in some areas and personal responsibility in undertaking complex operations or in organising others.

Certificate• levels 1 to 4 (Certificate I to IV);• varies from six months to one year full-time or equivalent part-time study; and• preparation for working in areas which require basic fundamental skills.

How do I apply?

If you are eligible for VET FEE-HELP assistance and would like to obtain a FEE HELP loan, you must first read a copy of the VET FEE-HELP Information Guide for Students and then obtain a Request for VET FEE-HELP assistance form, both available from SuniTAFE Student Administration.

Are you eligible?

An eligible student (for the purpose of VET FEE-HELP): • is an Australian citizen or permanent humanitarian visa holder who will be resident in Australia for the duration of the unit of study in which they are seeking VET FEE-HELP assistance; • is a full fee-paying student or a Victorian subsidised student enrolled on or before the census date in an eligible VET Unit of Study through an approved VET provider and remains enrolled in the unit at the end of the census date;• meets the tax file number requirements; • has completed, signed and submitted a valid request for VET FEE-HELP assistance form for the unit or the course of which the unit forms a part, on or before the census date; and • has not exceeded the FEE-HELP limit.

Chat and Chew Café in Mildura and Chatterbox Café in Swan Hill are facilities for students enrolled in the Certificate I in Work Education to provide training and skills in readiness for the workplace.

Students are trained using modern equipment parallel to the equipment utilised by our local businesses and the hospitality industry.

Apprenticeships and Traineeships

During an apprenticeship a person is contracted to an employer to learn all aspects of a trade through on the job training as well as off the job training at SuniTAFE. Apprenticeships can be delivered in a number of modes which best suit the apprentice and industry including, flexible delivery, on the job assessment and training or a combination of these.

Apprentices must first secure employment in their chosen field before commencing off the job training. SuniTAFE can provide guidance to assist in identifying appropriate employment opportunities.

A Traineeship is a contract between an employer and an employee for the provision of training and employment over a period of time. The employee (trainee) is given the opportunity to undertake practical training both on and off the job in order to meet the requirements of a specific qualification. Traineeships can commence at any given period over a calendar year, and vary in duration.

Trainees must first secure employment in their chosen field before commencing off the job training with SuniTAFE. New Apprenticeship Centres can assist prospective trainees in identifying appropriate employment.

Short Courses

SuniTAFE offers a wide range of short courses. For a full list of courses please refer to the Short Courses flier, the SuniTAFE website or contact your nearest campus. Applicants may enrol by telephone, mail, or in person. Mail enrolments must include payment of course fees. Places are available on a first-come-first-served basis.

If you are not currently a permanent resident of Australia or New Zealand please contact the International Students Unit.

VET FEE-HELP

VET FEE-HELP is available to assist eligible students to pay for all or part of their tuition fees when studying one or more accredited VET diploma or advanced diploma course of study.

Refunds

Application for refund of the course fee must be made on the prescribed form available from Student Administration staff. Where a course is cancelled by SuniTAFE prior to commencement, a full refund will be made.

Direct Credit Transfer

Direct Credit is available to students who enrol in a course and have an existing identical qualification from the same or another course. This applies to students transferring to SuniTAFE with a partially completed qualification or where units are identical for different courses. Students apply for Direct Credit using appropriate forms. If credit is granted they are exempt from enrolling into that unit.

Tuition Fees

If you are eligible for a government subsidised place, the Government pays most of the cost of your course, but you will still pay some fees, according to the fee schedule. If you are not eligible for a subsidised place, you might still undertake a course, but would have to pay on a fee for service basis, which costs more.
