VET in Schools (VETiS)

SuniTAFE is a leading provider of Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) programs to secondary schools across North West Victoria. VETiS studies combine general Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) with vocational training and experience in the workplace. A Vocational Education and Training (VET) program offers students the opportunity to complete a nationally recognised vocational qualification while providing credit towards the VCE or VCAL, just like other subjects. This qualification gives you access to further training to improve employment opportunities upon finishing school.

VETiS:• Gives you a nationally recognised qualification and broad range of skills• Prepares you for the workplace and builds your networks• Provides eligibility for two certificates upon successful completion of both a VCE or VCAL and a VETiS program • May shorten the length of an apprenticeship program.

VETiS is your chance to undertake some of your education as part of a SuniTAFE course while you’re still at school. VETiS can contribute to VCAL and VCE study and the ATAR score. To find out more about your options, discuss study plans with your VCAL or VCE Coordinator to learn how VETiS can work for you.

Pre-apprenticeships

SuniTAFE offers a selection of pre-apprenticeship courses to allow you

to experience and get prepared for a trade apprenticeship. Learn the basic skills without the need to secure employment first. Completion of a pre-apprenticeship course may reduce the time needed to complete an apprenticeship, depending on the relevant trade area.

School Based Apprenticeships

SuniTAFE offers School Based Apprenticeship programs that allow secondary students to work with an employer and complete a nationally recognised qualification while continuing their secondary studies.

A student wanting to do a School Based Apprenticeship will need to find an employer and have the support of their school and parents or guardian and sign a training contract. To find out more, speak with your school Careers Advisor.

Apprenticeships

SuniTAFE provides a selection of courses geared for apprenticeships. Apprentices must first secure employment in their chosen job before commencing off-the-job training. During the apprenticeship, a person is contracted to an employer to learn all aspects of a trade both on and off the job.

SuniTAFE offers flexible on-the-job and off-the-job training and assessment options for apprentices and apprenticeship courses which can be delivered in a number of ways to best suit the individual and the trade area in which they work. SuniTAFE can also provide guidance to assist in identifying appropriate employment opportunities.

Traineeships

SuniTAFE offers a number of courses which can be undertaken as a traineeship. Trainees must first secure employment in their chosen field before commencing off- the-job training with SuniTAFE. A traineeship is a contract between an employer and an employee for the provision of training and employment over a period of time. The employee (trainee) is given

Telephone 03 5022 3666 | Learn more: www.sunitafe.edu.au 3

the opportunity to undertake practical training both on and off the job in order to meet the requirements of a specific qualification. Traineeships can commence at any given period over a year and vary in duration.

Koorie Training

SuniTAFE offers an Indigenous program aimed to support Koorie students in their learning and pathways into further education and employment. The Koorie Unit has a dedicated team of Koorie Liason Officers who engage and interact with Koorie students to enable their learning outcomes. It is a place where students can meet and catch up with fellow Koorie students. Some of the programs offered include; Certificate I, II & III in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts (ATSICA) and the VCAL Intermediate & Senior.

Youth Programs

SuniTAFE offers a program targeted for youth aged 15 to 20 years. A varied range of programs are designed to make learning fun, whilst providing essential basic skills. The program incorporates short 5 to 10 week courses across varied disciplines, such as building a bike or skateboard deck, metal fabrication, mechanics, grow your own food, hospitality and graphic art and design. This program allows young people to pursue further vocational education and training.

Skills Recognition

Recognition of Prior Learning is the process of attaining formal nationally accredited qualifications based on your valuable work history, previous study and life experiences. Any combination of formal or informal training, education and work or life experience can be considered relevant to achieving recognition for certificate or diploma level qualifications.

SuniTAFE offers skills recognition via the Skills Recognition Centre. The team guides you through the application process, interprets your prior experience, organises assessment of your application and follows up on your application to ensure a timely service. Your skills recognition application will involve the collection of evidence for relevant experience so that competencies can be assessed.

Enquire about skills recognition prior to or after commencing your training and education. You may obtain recognition of competency for specific units of a course or the entire course qualification, based on your competency assessment. Use the skills recognition process to increase your employment opportunities or to further enhance your education and training.

Short Courses

SuniTAFE offers a range of short courses to enhance your work and lifestyle skills. Short courses are a great way to train, develop new skills and gain accreditation or to keep up with industry compliance and licensing requirements.

Learn how to be creative, cook a tempting decadent dessert, make coffee like a true barista, give your pooch a designer clip or arrange a spectacular floral centerpiece. SuniTAFE short courses are presented by our highly skilled professionals who are experts at what they do!

Is there somebody who can assist me?

Interested in enrolling? Your next step is to contact an Enrolment Advisor. The SuniTAFE Information Centre staff will discuss your options for study with you, give detailed advice about how to achieve your ultimate training goals and bring in training experts to consult with you about the specifics of your course. Your Enrolment Advisor will also be able to initiate any Skills Recognition for which you may be eligible and organise the paperwork for your application and enrolment process.

How do I apply?

If you have found the course that suits your needs, your Enrolment Advisor will arrange the necessary application process for you. Some courses have specific entry requirements and application procedures which may involve interviews, attendance at information events and/or internal or external aptitude testing while some courses require that you have an informal chat with the trainer to decide on your training plan before enrolling. Please ask your Enrolment Advisor for more information.

How can I get a quote?

For most courses TAFE fees and charges are calculated based on the subjects in which you enrol. Your fees are also affected by whether you study on or off campus, meet the requirements for entry into a subsidised or full fee paying place in a course and whether you possess a valid concession card. The fees for diploma level courses are calculated differently but are still affected by numerous other factors. To obtain a quote on fees for your enrolment you will first need to decide on which course and subjects you will be studying by consulting with an Enrolment Advisor. Quotes based on this information can then be easily obtained from Student Administration.

Can I get a concession?

Concessions can only be applied at a diploma or advanced diploma level to enrolments where the enrolling student is under 25 years of age.

If you are eligible for entry into a subsidised place in your chosen course and you possess a valid Health Care Card or Pension Card, issued by Centrelink, you will be able to get a concession on your tuition fees.

Telephone 03 5022 3666 | Learn more: www.sunitafe.edu.au 7

Please make sure you advise your enrolment officer that you possess the card and bring it with you when you enrol. Student Administration staff will need to retain a copy of your card for our records.

If you need to take proof of your enrolment to Centrelink or to your job network provider please advise your enrolment officer at the time of your enrolment. The appropriate documents can be provided on the spot.

How can I pay my fee?

You will need to pay for your course at the same time that you enrol. Payment options include EFTPOS, cash, cheque or payment by instalment (via direct debit). Please ask for further details at Student Administration if you would like to set up a Payment By Instalment plan. If you are undertaking study at a diploma or advanced diploma level (and satisfy citizenship requirements) you are eligible for VET FEE-HELP. Please ask your Enrolment Advisor for more information regarding this.

How do I enrol?

To complete your enrolment you will need:• A study plan detailing the units in which you will be enrolling which is obtained after your contact with an Enrolment Advisor and a trainer• A completed enrolment form which is

available from the SuniTAFE Information Centre

• A valid concession card if you are eligible (e.g. Health Care Card, Pension Card etc.)

• Valid Proof of Identification (e.g. drivers licence, passport, Medicare card, proof of age card etc.)

• A completed Payment By Instalment form if this is your preferred method of payment as well as proof of your bank details such as a bank statement, passbook, print out from your internet banking or account information card from your bank.

Once you have all the documentation you require your enrolment can be completed at Student Administration.

What if I want to withdraw?

If you wish to withdraw from your course, or perhaps from just a subject or two, please contact Student Administration. The staff will generate some paperwork for you to sign which will commence your withdrawal process.

They will also arrange a brief exit interview with our Senior Course Advisor to allow you to give us feedback on your reasons for withdrawal and to discuss any further study options with you. Your withdrawal paperwork will be completed by your teaching centre and processed by Student Administration.

Your refund entitlements are examined as part of your withdrawal procedure. This does not happen at your initial request for withdrawal but takes place after Student

Administration has been advised by your teaching centre regarding your hours attended and any materials refund to which you may be entitled. Any refund entitlements are then calculated based on this information.

For further information regarding the specifics of fee refunds for students who have withdrawn from study, please consult the Fee Refund information which can be found on the back of your Confirmation of Enrolment or ask at Student Administration.

What happens after I enrol?

Welcome to SuniTAFE! After you have completed the enrolment process you will be able to obtain a student card from the Learning Resource Centre. This will allow you to access student resources such as computers and borrow resources from the library. Your timetable can be obtained from your teaching centre or accessed via the Student Portal.
