IELTS Centre

Sunderland College is the Regional Testing Centre for the North East of England for IELTS (the International English Language Testing System).

What is IELTS?

IELTS is intended to assess the language ability of individuals who need to study or work where English is the language of communication. It covers the four language skills - Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking Modules. If you are planning to start academic study, you should sit for the Academic Reading and Writing Modules. If you are intending on undertaking nonacademic training or applying for immigration into Canada, Australia or New Zealand, you should sit for the General Training Reading and Writing Modules.

Who needs IELTS?

Non-native English speakers need IELTS in order to pursue academic study in the UK, an IELTS test score is requested by most British colleges and universities.

IELTS is recognised by employers in the UK and necessary for some non-native English speakers who want to work in positions such as doctors, nurses, dentists and pharmacists.

EVERYONE, including native English speakers, may be required to confirm an official IELTS score in order to seek immigration to Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
