What about Sunday School for everyone else? Our teenagers have their own class every Sunday in the youth room. Adults have Bible Study every Sunday with Bob Bashore in the library except………once a month when we will have a special presentation for the entire congregation. In October our special presentation will be Larry House from the Lutheran Seminary at Philadelphia.

Do you realize we give our seminary $5000.00 a year? $3000-$5000 has been given regularly

“Seminary will talk with us” Sunday, October 14th

We’ll learn how they use our funds. We’ll understand who goes to seminary.

This year we are again participating in the Crop Walk sponsored by our Reading Berks Conference of Churches. It will be held Sunday,

October 14. Registration starts at 12:30 at RACC, with the walk stepping off at 1:30pm. If you are interested in walking, please speak

with Kay Stout. There will be a sign up sheet in the narthex if you wish to sponsor a walker. A portion of the money collected goes to the local food bank and the balance goes to Church World Services.

Why are we Lutherans?

Do you know we hold Sunday Worship once a year so that we can understand that?

We call it “Reformation Sunday”. We remember how we felt the church needed to be re-formed.

Saturday, Oct. 27, 5:30 PM Sunday, October 28, 10:30 AM

We’ll be ringing and singing “special” for that Weekend.

The First Saturday and Sunday in November

Coats for Kids October 1 thru November 14, 2012

It’s that time of year when we ask for your help with the “Coats of Kids” program. The Conrad Weiser Middle School Library will again be collecting “Coats for Kids.” For almost 20 years, this project has provided needy children and adults in Berks County with gently used winter

Page 11: Sunday, October 7, 9:15 AM Halloween Party for the Kids ... · good start! We had a wonderful turn out for Laser Quest and everyone had a good time. Thank you to the adults who chaperoned

coats. Thanks to the Conrad Weiser community, we collected approximately 235 coats last year. Our goal is to collect even more this year! The Salvation Army can also use adult coats since many of the children are also adult sizes. In addition to children, coats are distributed to adults in need. This is the perfect time to dig through your closets and get rid of those coats you haven’t worn in a long time or have outgrown for one reason or another. Your gently used coats may be dropped off in the Conrad Weiser Middle School Office between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The coats will be sent to local dry cleaners who generously donate their equipment and time to clean all the garments. The coats are then distributed by the Salvation Army to needy children and adults throughout the community. If you know of a child in need of a coat, please contact the Salvation Army at 610-373-5208.

humanity portrayed by that treatment.

Our Church’s Stand on Domestic Violence October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

What is domestic violence? A definition commonly used reads “a pattern of power and control of one person over another in an intimate relationship.” When talking about domestic violence, most people think of physical violence – hitting, punching, throwing things, strangulation and other physical methods, however, control can include threats, psychological battering, isolation, financial abuse, and sexual or emotional abuse; batterers usually use several of these methods to control members of their household, the people they supposedly love.

Why does domestic violence happen in “good, Christian homes?” God created both men and women in his image; Paul writes to the church in Ephesus about Jesus’ teachings of the egalitarian treatment of women (Ephesians 5:22-29). So how did society veer from these teachings? In studying history, we can see how various cultures, going back to Biblical times, established a patriarchal society, often making women ‘invisible’ and powerless outside the home. Batterers conveniently choose specific texts to support their treatment of their spouses as possessions (Judges 19:22-29) and minimizing the value of their partners (1 Timothy 2:14). It is important to remember Christ’s teachings and respect our partnerships. It is never okay to control or abuse someone.

How can you help someone who may be victimized by their partner? Start by learning more about domestic violence; schedule an educational presentation for your group; always be available – let that person know that s/he can call you or knock on your door at any time, day or night; call the police when you suspect injury or danger; call Berks Women in Crisis (BWIC) to discover specific ways you can help a friend. Never give up.

“There is one teacher, namely Christ, and… in His spirit there are no distinctions between persons, nor any reason of age, sex or race that elects some to domination… combativeness in family life, whereby

man and wife or parents and children strive to assert a supremacy of will, is not compatible with the conviction that there is that of God in everyone.” - 1972 Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, Society of Friends (Quakers)
