Jesus discusses a couple of the Ten Commandments today. Whenever we are commanded to do something, we can easily become suspicious or discouraged. However, the Ten Commandments come from God him-self. Therefore, we never want to look upon them as restricting our happiness. In contrast, we want to see them as giving us direction, freedom, and joy. In our gospel today, Jesus focuses on the fifth and sixth com-mandments. (Mt 5:17-37) He warns against two deadly sins arising from these commandments, anger and lust. We can often live in an angry and divided world. As we read, watch, and witness anger, it is easy to fall prey to such a deadly sin. Anger, at its worst stage, can even lead to killing another. Jesus encourages the angry person to “go first and be reconciled with your brother.” Is there anyone that I need to be reconciled with? Am I an angry person? Do I give others the benefit of the doubt? In the end, anger is debilitating and contagious and can lead to horrible actions. A second deadly sin that Jesus discusses is lust. In a culture that promotes sexual gratification, this is anoth-er sin that can easily overcome us. We are often inundated with the false glories of physical pleasure. Por-nography is an epidemic (there are numerous websites that can help counter addictions to pornography). As an experiment, I invite you to analyze the various forms of technology/media that fill your day and also dai-ly conversations. Take a step back and look at what you face each day and view it with the heart of Jesus and see what you find. There is certainly good programming out there and positive conversations, but it is also very enlightening to step away and analyze some of the negative things that can lead us away from Je-sus. Please keep a look out not only for lustful temptations but also the anger and division that can come our way. As to lust, Jesus does not mince words. He tells us to tear our eye out and cut off our hand. (29-30) He is speaking in hyperbole. That is, Jesus does not mean this literally, but he is saying to do all that we can to avoid sexual temptations. We need Jesus’ help to combat any anger or lust in our lives. Jesus is here to fill us with his grace to avoid these sins and all sins so that we can be filled with his life and his love. In the end, may we see God’s commandments not as restrictive but as freeing. Ash Wednesday is on February 26. Please find the Lenten schedule in the bulletin. All are welcome to be a part of Alpha which starts this Monday, February 17. This is a program to renew our faith in Jesus and to come together as a new parish. Details are in the bulletin. We are also happy to offer Word Among Us book-lets for the Lenten season. They contain wonderful reflections for each day of Lent. They also include the daily Mass readings. Booklets are at the doors of each of our churches. As we begin Lent, we start our annual Parish Share Program. It officially kicks off on the First Sunday of Lent. I will have more information about the program in next weekend’s bulletin. You will soon receive a Parish Share packet in the mail. I will also speak about it at the Masses over the next couple of weekends. Please see in the bulletin information about the kick-off for the 40 Day for Life on Tuesday, February 25. I plan to be one of the many priests concelebrating this Mass for life followed by a Eucharistic Procession. I hope you can join us.

LENTEN REGULATIONS
1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the United States.
2. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 18-59. No one should consider this obligation lightly.
3. Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be considered harmful are not obliged to fast, but should perform some other act of penance or charity.
4. Pastors and parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are educated in the authentic sense of penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age.
5. All members of the Christian Faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by the law.
6. As a general rule, a request for a dispensation from the obligation of abstinence on Fridays of Lent will not be considered unless some serious reason is present. The attendance at social events, banquets, wedding rehearsals or receptions, or funeral wakes are not considered sufficient reason to request a dispensation.
