CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL, NELSON
Sunday Bulletin – 15th December 2019
Christmas Remembrance Service - 3rd Sunday in Advent
Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson. Children are welcome at our services.
There are toys in the Quiet Room. Please feel free to take this publication away with you.
Dear Cathedralites,
It is an especially poignant time this morning at our 8 am and 10 am services as we, in the midst of Advent, remember and grieve again those loved ones who have died and whose death still profoundly impacts on us. At Christmas time we feel the loss even more acutely. So, it is pertinent that we come together and acknowledge the grief and the pain we feel as we bring along a flower in remembrance and hear the names of our loved ones read out.
We are privileged to have our own Beatrice Clover speak at our 10 am service, she is absolutely amazing. At age 78 she emigrated to New Zealand from London, she fell in love with an old English cottage in South St. and lives there under the shadow of our Cathedral. Beatrice is a regular worshipper here. She suffered a traumatic injury in an accident nearby and the late Dean Nick Kirk was influential in bringing her into the life of the Cathedral. She has an amazing story to tell of her son who died in infancy. Beatrice is much loved in our Cathedral community and she has gracefully agreed to share her experiences knowing that it may help others deal with their loss.
Our memorial garden is available for Cathedral folk to have their ashes buried. It may be something you have been considering so have a chat to Chris or Judith Fitchett.
I am pleased to announce that Canon Jocelyn Smith has agreed to take up the role of “keeper of the Fabric” which generally means she oversees the appropriate maintenance, repair and cleanliness and replacement of furnishings of the Cathedral as required. Jocelyn is very conscientious and has a great love for this Cathedral and so we congratulate her on this appointment as a volunteer and thank her.
We also thank Cecil Hood who has been in this role for the last six years and has recently moved to Geraldine. He has been an amazing servant to this Cathedral, and we wish him well as he heads south. He has recently had to navigate the flooded Rangitata river!
It was a thrill to have been part of the Bible reading on the Cathedral steps yesterday. Sean, with help from the Gideons, did an excellent job of motivating many many people to read the New Testament and put Christmas into its proper contextwithout the commercialisation during this Advent time. I would like to think it will be an annual event.

SERVICE INFORMATION: Those receiving Holy Communion are invited to do so EITHER by
intinction, i.e. retaining the wafer when it is given to you and then dipping it in the cup of wine before
consuming it OR by consuming the wafer when it is given to you and then drinking from the common
cup.
• Grape juice is available at communion.
• Gluten free wafers are available.
• Hearing Aid Loop available - please turn to the T position on your hearing aid ALSO
• Ramp for access to the Sanctuary (on the right side)
• Special chairs are available from the Pulpit side for those with disabilities or back problems.
Note that the leg height can be adjusted to suit.
HEALTH ADVISORY NOTICE: Worshippers experiencing Cold or Influenza-like illnesses or
associated symptoms are advised to refrain from partaking of the practice of “Intinction” with the wafer
or using the “Common Cup” during the communion ceremony. Clearly labelled wine and fruit juice al-
ternatives are provided utilising the small thimble glasses. This recommendation is an
important personal and public health issue which conforms with the Cathedral’s Health & Safety
requirements. 2
I loved listening to the band at last week’s performance in the Cathedral. I have never seen so many heads nodding. No, it was not at any sermon, but they were all nodding as this young guy on percussion maintained an amazing beat to the Little Drummer Boy. All of us were taken up into tapping our toes and nodding our heads keeping up with the beat!
I look forward to hosting the volunteer’s barbeque at the Deanery next Thursday mid-day to 2 pm. All volunteers are welcome. Please give me a ring on 021711726 so I can cater. Not only this Cathedral but all churches are absolutely reliable upon volunteers. So, to all of you I thank you profusely. There is no need to bring anything other than your drink of choice.
I am really keen to add to our Cathedral side’s-people team. How about ringing me and offering to be a side’s person on a Sunday 10 am service. Your role is to welcome people and also to help mastermind the time when folk go up to communion. By assisting them you make life easier for everyone.
Please invite lots of folk to next Sunday night’s Carols and Lessons at 7 pm. Nigel Weeks advertised it at the band’s concert at last week. Last year it was a packed out Cathedral culminating with a standing ovation for the Nelson City Brass Band and to Lesley Bandy’s group of dancers both of whom are back for next Sunday’s service.
My thanks to Una for hosting next week’s choir party. Melanie and the music team are working extraordinarily long hours readying themselves for the Christmas services. We give them all much thanks.
It is sad that my friend Rev. Gordon Langrell died recently. I was supposed to go and take the funeral on Wednesday but just couldn’t do it. He was a great servant of the church and a charismatic leader. He impacted the lives of many for the good.
Have a great week. In His service, Mike

Isaiah 35: 1-10 (8 am) 1The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus 2 it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the LORD, the majesty of our God. 3 Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. 4 Say to those who are of a fearful heart, ‘Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you.’ 5 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; 6 then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; 7 the burning
sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. 8 A highway shall be there and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not travel on it, but it shall be for God’s people; no traveller, not even fools, shall go astray. 9 No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. 10 And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with singing; ever-lasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
7 Be patient, therefore, beloved, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious crop from the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. 8 You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, for the coming
of the Lord is near. 9 Beloved, do not grumble against one another, so that you may not be judged. See, the Judge is standing at the doors! 10 As an example of suffering and patience, beloved, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
Matthew 11:2-11 (8 am) 2 When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his disciples 3 and said to him, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or are we to
wait for another?’ 4 Jesus answered them, ‘Go and tell John what you hear and see: 5 the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed,

the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. 6 And blessed is anyone who takes no offence at me.’ 7 As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: ‘What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 What then did you go out to see? Some-one dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft robes are in royal pal-aces. 9 What then did you go out to
see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written, “See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.” 11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
8 Ah, you who join house to house, who add field to field, until there is room for no one but you, and you are left to live alone in the midst of the land! 9 The LORD of hosts has sworn in my hearing: Surely many houses shall be desolate, large and beautiful houses, without inhabitant. 10 For ten acres of vineyard shall yield but one bath, and a homer of seed shall yield a mere ephah. 11 Ah, you who rise early in the morning in pursuit of strong drink, who linger in the evening to be inflamed by wine, 12 whose feasts consist of lyre and harp, tambourine and flute and wine, but
who do not regard the deeds of the LORD, or see the work of his hands! 13 Therefore my people go into exile without knowledge; their nobles are dying of hunger, and their multitude is parched with thirst. 14 Therefore Sheol has enlarged its appetite and opened its mouth beyond measure; the nobility of Jerusalem and her multitude go down, her throng and all who exult in her. 15 People are bowed down, every-one is brought low, and the eyes of the haughty are humbled. 16 But the LORD of hosts is exalted by justice, and the Holy God shows himself holy by
Isaiah 5:8-20, 25 (5.30 pm)
Psalm 12 (5.30 pm) 1 Help, O LORD, for there is no longer anyone who is godly; the faithful have disappeared from humankind. 2 They utter lies to each other; with flattering lips and a double heart they speak. 3 May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, the tongue that makes great boasts, 4 those who say, ‘With our tongues we will prevail; our lips are our own—who is our master?’ 5 ‘Because the poor are despoiled, because the needy groan, I will now rise up,’ says the LORD; ‘I will place them in the safety for which they long.’ 6 The promises of the LORD are promises that are pure, silver refined in a furnace on the ground, purified seven times. 7 You, O LORD, will protect us you will guard us from this generation for ever. 8 On every side the wicked prowl, as vileness is exalted among humankind.

righteousness. 17 Then the lambs shall graze as in their pasture, fatlings and kids shall feed among the ruins. 18 Ah, you who drag iniquity along with cords of falsehood, who drag sin along as with cart-ropes, 19 who say, ‘Let him make haste, let him speed his work that we may see it; let the plan of the Holy One of Israel hasten to fulfilment, that we may know it!’ 20 Ah, you who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness
for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! 25 Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against his people, and he stretched out his hand against them and struck them; the mountains quaked, and their corpses were like refuse in the streets. For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.
26 ‘My brothers, you descendants of Abraham’s family, and others who fear God, to us the message of this salvation has been sent. 27 Because the residents of Jerusalem and their leaders did not recognize him or understand the words of the prophets that are read every sabbath, they fulfilled those words by condemning him. 28 Even though they found no cause for a sentence of death, they asked Pilate to have him killed. 29 When they had carried out everything that was written about him,
they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead; 31 and for many days he appeared to those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, and they are now his witnesses to the people. 32 And we bring you the good news that what God promised to our ancestors 33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising Jesus; as also it is written in the second psalm, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you.”

ST BARNABAS PRAYER
SUNDAY 15 Heavenly Father, who revealed the birth of Your Son to wise men from the east, and led them by a star to find Him, we thank You for the wonderful growth of Your Church in Iran, where the wise men with their gifts may have started their journey. We praise You that, despite prison and torture, despite ban and confiscation of Christian literature, nothing can hinder the work of Your Spirit who is leading more and more Iranian Muslims to faith in the Lord Jesus. Please strengthen and help each new believer, that their lives will glorify Christ, in whose Name we pray. Amen.

NELSON GOSPEL DAY – 14 December
Requesting readers please of all ages!
to do a 15 minute reading ….
You are warmly invited to Nelson Gospel Day! On December the 14th, volunteers from all
over the Top of the South are going to read the New Testament non-stop from beginning to
end at the Cathedral Steps. Would you like to share the Gospel with Nelson?
The entire New Testament takes about 20 - 24 hours to read and people will do 15 minute
readings so we will need:
• 80 - 100 readers. Book a time by emailing [email protected] or filling out
the online form (PC version) (Mobile phone version).
• Promoters at all the churches of Nelson.
• Promoters in person and by phone and on social media and by email. Please forward this
email to your friends and family!7
• Lots of extra keen readers who will read the Gospel in the middle of the night. It is a
Saturday night in summer and McDonalds is nearby so there is likely to be an audience
right through to the end!
• Backup readers to be there for one hour in case of allocated readers not showing up.
• Prayer volunteers to pray with members of the public on request.
• People to set up and pack up.
• People to bring refreshments.
• Prayer volunteers to pray for the event.
• Other things that we haven't even thought of!
This is a tremendous chance to:
• Put Christmas back in its proper context
and share the real Christmas message - the good news of Jesus!
• Spread the Good News the way it was shared before the New Testament existed, as
recorded in Acts!
• Use the freedom to share God's Word while we have it, as Christians around the world
would love to be able to do!
All that you need to bring is yourself and a desire to help to share the word. The Bible will
be provided on the day. If you would like to help in any way or if you have questions about
Gospel Day, please feel free to email [email protected]. We are also on
Facebook, or you can call Sean on 0273512750 (12 - 1 p.m. or after 5 on weekdays, all day
Saturday and after 12 p.m. on Sundays).
Best Regards,
