BELONGING
We welcome new disciples to our
parish communities. If you live
within our parish boundaries, which
is our mission eld, then you are
already a member. It is still
important that you register at the
Parish Oce or during registration
weekends so we can communicate
with you throughout the year. We
are here to help you meet Jesus
Christ, grow in holiness, and fully
participate in a life of prayer.
Please call or stop at either parish
oce, or speak with Fr. Schuster.
We are disciples together!

Question: Is it permissible for a Catholic to be cremated and
the ashes buried in a biodegradable container with a tree
planted over it as a living memorial?
Answer: Catholics may be cremated so long as cremation
does not demonstrate a denial of belief in the resurrection of
the body (Catechism 2301). In a 2016 instruction on
cremation, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith
(CDF) declared, “The ashes of the faithful must be laid to rest
in a sacred place, that is, in a cemetery or, in certain cases, in
a church or an area, which has been set aside for this
purpose, and so dedicated by the competent ecclesial
authority” (Ad Resurgendum cum Christo 5).
The CDF also said, “In order that every appearance of
pantheism, naturalism or nihilism be avoided, it is not
permitted to scatter the ashes of the faithful departed in the
air, on land, at sea or in some other way” (7). All cons and
cremation containers eventually decay, even if it takes
thousands of years. However, using a container that is
designed to decay quickly so that the ashes are distributed
into the earth and surrounding plants may constitute
“scattering” them on the land, which is prohibited.
You should contact a local Catholic cemetery that can
provide a suitable container for ashes and may even allow a
tree to be planted over the burial site so long as it is done in
memory of the deceased and not to promote an unorthodox
view of death and the duty to bury the dead.

One of the books that I recently read was called, “The Five
Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable” by Patrick Lencioni.
It is even written from a Christian perspective. In our parishes we
are experiencing a shortage of volunteers, a fear of stepping
forward, the burnout of long-term volunteers, and a need for new
members of committees and councils. This is a normal
occurrence in most parishes, but it also holds back a parish from
offering greater love and service to the community. One of the
answers is for all of us to become a team. This is the name of the
game in the future. Perhaps I have written this very same article
already but we need to hear it again. The early Apostles and
disciples were a team, and they are our model.
Lencioni identi'es 've dysfunctions that exist in teams. The goal
of this year in our parishes and schools is to grow into a true team
by addressing these dysfunctions in a biblical way. Yes, you can
even see these dysfunctions as they playout in the life of the
Apostles. Always remembering the sacri'ce of Jesus Christ, and
empowered by new gifts of the Holy Spirit, the early Church
eventually become a team and changed the world.
Examine these dysfunctions below and see what role they play in
the family, the workplace, the church, or any team that you are
part of these days. Overcoming these dysfunctions is
uncomfortable, but the end result is growth, new leaders, better
committees, and more love.
Dysfunction #1: Absence of Trust. The fear of being
vulnerable prevents team members from building trust with
each other.
 Dysfunction #2: Fear of Con0ict.
 Dysfunction #3: Lack of Commitment.
 Dysfunction #4: Avoidance of Accountability.
 Dysfunction #5: Inattention to Results.

ST. MARY PLAYGROUND UPDATE
CATHOLIC FINANCIAL LIFE DONATION
Paul Heim of Catholic Financial Life Chapter #288 of Luxemburg &
Sugarbush stopped in this past week to make a donation to St. Mary
Parish. Catholic Financial Life supports the “Catholic Comeback” of
all of our parishioners to safe celebrations of the Holy Mass. To help
our parish in this time of need, a $500.00 donation was made to
make up for the shortfalls we are experiencing due to COVID-19.
Thank you to Catholic Financial Life. Please consider utilizing their
2nancial services and/or become active in the Casco or the
Luxemburg/Sugarbush chapters.
THANK YOU!
ST. MARY SPRING FLING UPDATE
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2020
Due to circumstances, our already postponed Spring Fling will not be able to
happen as we once hoped.
There will not be an event at the Fairgrounds Expo Building
There will not be a Mass with Polka Music
The booyah sale WILL still take place September 12th in the church parking
lot. Pre-orders are encouraged.
The bucket raAes and live auction items WILL be available via silent auction
in church AND through an online bidding program throughout the month of
September. Details on items will be posted through the school Facebook
site.
We are hoping to still do our most popular raAe- DESSERTS!
Our Home & School Organization cannot help the school without the funding that comes
from the Spring Fling. We will be doing a direct donation appeal in order to try and gain
funding. We are hoping that the community will come through as it has so many times in
the past. Please keep your eyes open for more details.
What you see above represents an
awesome team effort between the
people of St. Mary Parish, the Home
& School organization, the Building
& Grounds Committee (especially
Glenn Rueckl), and our own local
tradesmen. We are excited to
welcome our students back with
new swings for our littlest students,
and new curva spinners for all of our
students. You can still contribute to
this project by giving directly to
Home & School through the parish
o=ce. They need your help!
