STEWARDSHIP & MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

02

Among the compelling Eucharistic themes proclaimed in today’s readings is the notion of “participation” as found in Saint Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, or in other words, putting the Eucharist into action. Good stewards are part of a Eucharistic family that loves, welcomes and serves. An important part of living as a steward comes about in the many ways we can participate in the life of the Church. No matter how much time we have to give, no matter what our skills or interests, no matter what our level of commitment, there is a way to participate as a good steward to enrich our lives and the lives of others to build up the Body of Christ. During this time when people are anxious and fearful, what are we doing to welcome others, and to love and be of service to them?

Weekend of June 7th

Offertory figures for the weekend of June 7th were not available due to the Tropical Storm. Financial information for the 7th of June along with the weekend of June 14th will appear in next Sunday’s Parish Family Bulletin! Thank you. Thank you for continuing to support your parish during these trying times. Our Lady of Fatima Parishioners have always shown their love for Christ and their parish by their generosity, loyalty and faithfulness to the needs of the parish, both temporal and spiritual. May Our Lady of Fatima continue to keep us in her care and intercede for us with her Divine Son for an end to the COVID-19 pandemic.

THIS WEEKS LINEUP

FRIDAY, JUNE 19: Sacred Heart of Jesus: Listen: Jesus the Bridegroom

Read: Heart of the Redeemer; Study: Lectio: Salvation

SATURDAY, JUNE 20: Immaculate Heart of Mary Read: Redemptoris Mater by Saint Pope John Paul II

Study: The Bible and the Virgin Mary - The Promised Mother

The vow of poverty unites a consecrated person to “Christ who is poor, deprived of the goods of this world so that He could be free to dedicate Himself completely to the work entrusted to Him by the Father.” * Consecrated persons embrace poverty for these same reasons, namely, to be freed from material things and preoccupation with them so that they may devote themselves, united with Jesus, to complete the mission that God has entrusted to them. Lúcia’s reflections on poverty will give great benefit to those who do not take such a vow. Absorption in the goods of this world makes a person spiritually blind, weakens the apostolate, and prevents a person’s entire and exclusive dedication to the Lord. The Gospel of Saint Matthew recounts the encounter of the rich young man with Jesus (Matthew 19:16-21). The Lord promises to those who give up everything to follow Him both the necessities of this life and treasure in Heaven. Jesus bids us to trust in Divine Providence. The Sermon on the Mount records Jesus’ words in this regard (Matthew 6:25-33). With respect to our treasures, Jesus says, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal. But store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” (Matthew 6:19-21). The vow of poverty enables consecrated persons to make their hearts rest in God. Sister Lúcia herself is an example of this.

I myself can bear wonderful testimony to this truth. I left home at thirteen years of age, without worrying about what I was to wear or to eat; I abandoned myself completely to divine Providence in order to follow God’s will and until today, though I have never had any privileges, which I did not want, I have never lacked anything I needed.

Jesus promised Saint Peter, “And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life.” (Matthew 19:29). Lúcia remarks that the word “hundredfold” (“hundred times more”) shows that Jesus wants consecrated persons not to be deprived of the necessities of life. Saint Mark’s

gospel adds the phrase “now in this present age” to “hundredfold.” (Mark 10:30). What the vow of poverty requires is that consecrated persons “should renounce the right to possess things as if they were our own; also that we make use of everything that we need, but look upon it as if it were an alms, and use it as if it were on loan to us. In this way our heart remains free from earthly goods and can aspired to those of Heaven: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom o heaven.” (Mt 5:3.)”

The mission of consecrated persons is to work and sanctify themselves in union with Christ for the Kingdom of Heaven. Thus each consecrated soul is another Christ on earth, another lamb sent by God to take away the sins of the world. The way to accomplish this mission is to give our lives: “unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” (Jn 12:24). It is by death that we attain to life, and it is by means of the life that we thus attain that we save ourselves from death. … This is the glory of consecrated souls, the glory that they hope for from God and that raises them up to God. … It was for this reason that, there in the heavens, close to the Sun which had gone pale in the presence of the Light of God, the Message wished to give us a taste of the glory enjoyed by those who have already reached the Kingdom of God, but who, here on earth, by the example of their lives and the light of their teaching have marked out for us the way to heaven: Jesus, Mary and Joseph!

the FEAST OF CORPUS CHRIST - THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

On the second Sunday after Pentecost, we cele-brate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, also known as the Feast of Cor-pus Christi, which is Latin for “the body of Christ”. This feast day commemorates the Eucharist, the meal in which we partake of the Body and Blood of Christ. The Eucharist is at the heart of our Catholic faith and traditionally, holds a spe-cial place among the sacraments. The Catechism of the Catholic Church has this to say about the importance of the Eucharist: 1324 The Eucharist is "the source and summit of the Christian life."341 "The other sacraments,

and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spir-itual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch."135

The Eucharist was instituted by Jesus at the Last Supper and this institution of the sacrament is celebrated on Holy Thursday. However, the emphasis of the Triduum is on the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus, which creates the need for another feast day focusing on the Eucharist itself. As Catholics, we believe in transubstantiation, the Real Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist.

1374 The mode of Christ's presence under the Eucharistic species is unique. It raises the Eu-charist above all the sacraments as "the perfection of the spiritual life and the end to which all the sacraments tend."199 In the most blessed sacrament of the Eucharist "the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained."200 "This presence is called 'real' - by which is not intended to exclude the other types of presence as if they could not be 'real' too, but be-cause it is presence in the fullest sense: that is to say, it is a substantial presence by which Christ, God and man, makes himself wholly and entirely present."201

The Feast of Corpus Christi emphasizes and celebrates this Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. The feast of Corpus Christi was first suggested by St. Juliana, a nun of Liege, Belgium, who personally had a strong devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and who longed for a feast in honor of the Eucharist. A papal bull was issued by Pope Urban IV in 1264 commanding the universal observance of the feast. Many of the pray-ers and hymns associated with the feast of Corpus Christi have been attributed to St. Thomas Aquinas, who composed them at the request of Pope Urban. For us Catholics, every Mass is a commemoration of Jesus’ Last Supper and it is also a proclamation and a participation in this mystery. The feast of Corpus Christi helps us to refocus on what we are called to do at every Mass – to celebrate our belief in the risen Christ, to witness to our faith in that living Christ by how we live our lives and to become Christ by our receiving His Body and Blood.

prayer for hurricane season O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a pro-voked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and dis-aster. During this hurricane season we turn to you, O Loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Vir-

gin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen.

Youngest of eight boys born to Octavius and Theresa Antoine Palazzolo; his father died when Luigi was about 10 years old. Ordained a priest in the dio-cese of Berga-mo, Italy on June 23, 1850. As a parish priest, he would occasionally encounter chil-dren who were abandoned or or-phaned and living on their own; he would take them in and care for them until he could get them placed somewhere caring and safe. He founded the Little House of Di-vine Providence to care for neglect-ed children, and the Work of Saint Dorothy home to care for aban-doned girls. Founded the Brothers of the Sacred Family, a congrega-tion that died out in 1928. With Venerable Maria Teresa Gabrieli, he founded the Sisters of the Poor (Poverelle Sisters; Palazzolo Insti-tute) on May 22, 1869 to care for and educate neglected girls; the Sisters received papal approval from Pope Pius X on May 25, 1912, and continue their good work today in Brazil, Burkina Faso, Congo, Italy, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Malawi, Peru and Switzerland. Founded an orphan-age in Traona, Italy on October 4, 1872. Due to respiratory problems, Father Luigi had to sleep sitting up during the last year or so of his life. an insurrection. In Krakow, he be-came a popular, well-known and well-liked artist. His interest in poli-tics and art made him keenly aware of the human misery around him. A gentle and compassionate soul, he felt called to help those in need. After years of reflection, he under-stood that this desire was how God was calling him to service and Him-self. Franciscan tertiary, taking the name Albert. He abandoned painting, and began a life of work-ing with and for the poorest of Kra-kow. In 1887 he founded the Broth-ers of the Third Order of Saint Fran-cis, Servants of the Poor, known as the Albertines (named for him) or the Gray Brothers (after their rough gray habits.). In 1891 he founded the women’s congregation of the Or-der (Gray Sisters). The Albertines organized food and shelter for the poor and homeless. Albert preached that the great calamity of our time was that so many refused to see and volun-tarily relieve the suffering of their miserable brothers and sisters. The “haves” lived away from the “have-nots” in order to ignore them and leave their care to others.

In 1949, Pope John Paul II wrote a well-received play about Albert; the work was filmed in 1997, released as Brother of Our God.
