English Eighth grade
The English 8 Team has graded the Benchmark 2 Short Papers using the VDOE Six-Trait Writ-
ing Rubric. The English team will be reviewing the data from these exams and implementing focused
instructional plans for the individual student’s needs as we will be prepare for the upcoming SOL Writ-
ing Multiple Choice Exam and The Direct Writing Prompt Essay Examination in March. As always, flexi-
ble grouping among the English teachers will provide a new perspective on rules of punctuation and
grammar. Additional activities will be provided to enhance each student’s writing with revision strate-
gies and peer-edits. Please remember that the Virginia Department of Education website provides
practice test items as well as a list of prompts for the students to annotate and write down ideas to help
prepare them for the short paper essay. Again, thank you for all your assistance at home in preparing
your student to rise to his or her academic challenges each day. The English teachers greatly appreci-
ate it!
Below are some tips to help with the writing process.
“Success is the sum of small efforts-
repeated day in and day out “
- Robert Collier -

Preparing for the Writing SOL ChMS: My GPS for Success!
Our 8th graders will be taking the two-part Writing SOL in mid-March 2020. The test
consists of two parts, taken on two separate days:
Multiple Choice - students are tested on their ability to edit for Standard American
English.
Best ways to prepare:
NoRedInk - practice editing given sentences and paragraphs to correct errors.
Editing your own writing or practice editing a friend's writing
Short paper (essay) - students must write a well-developed, edited essay in response to
a given prompts. The prompts are available for everyone to read through and prepare
prior to the test, and we've included them here.
Best ways to practice:
Have conversations with friends and family about the prompts and how you would
respond, in addition to what evidence you would provide to support your claim.
Practice pre-writing for each prompt (examples listed on the following page)
Practice writing rough drafts and edited essays in response to the prompts
English teachers are preparing students for the Writing SOL and the Reading SOL
(grades 7 and 8), so we encourage students to complete all of their assignments in
NoRedInk, in Achieve 3000, and in Vocabulary.com. In addition, students can use all three
programs for extra practice at any time, even if they've completed all practice assigned by
their teachers.

We are excited to announce that our students will soon have access to Naviance through
their Clever portal. Naviance is a comprehensive college, career and life readiness online
program that helps students align their strengths and interests to postsecondary goals, im-
proving student outcomes and connecting learning to life.
Our seventh grade students will begin working with Naviance in February. Our counselors
will guide them through the program and assist them in completing a career interest as-
sessment. Throughout the month of February , 7th grade students will also complete their
course selection sheets for 8th grade. Please contact your child's counselor if you have any
questions.

vocabulary about classroom objects,
places in the school, and emotions. We
are also working on learning the differ-
ences between the verbs ser and estar.

Guidelines for Students in After-School Activities and Events
We encourage all of our Truckers to participate actively in all of our clubs, teams, and events at the
school. Our after school activities and events help us extend students' learning and help our students
practice leadership skills and develop life-long character skills.
As a reminder, the PPS Code of Conduct applies during all after-school events, including clubs, ac-
tivities, and athletic games and matches. In addition, students must meet grade requirements to partici-
pate in after-school activities and teams.
For students attending games, please remember that students must be picked up from the event
within 15 minutes of the end of the game. Students who are on campus after 15 minutes will be prevented
from attending any future games. We have implemented this rule to ensure student safety.
