There exists one special holiday that seems shortchanged by a single day of celebration each year. It honors the hardest

working individuals on the planet. They nurture and nourish; heal and hope; provide and protect. They teach us to count our

toes and our blessings. They bravely guide us through life’s most fr ightening storms. From their example, we learn to love others as well as ourselves. Most of all, they instill confi dence in our

ability to safely cross the road even when they are no longer here to hold our hand.

Happy Mother’s Day!

New Resident Orientation

VIRGINIA MOTTOLAThe things that most impressed me on my tour of

the Summit at Glenwyck were: The beauty of the

common areas, the spacious rooms with a lovely

view, a full size washer & dryer, and the level of

security.

After settling in, I found there were many activities,

lectures, events, trips and exercise programs

available. There was the opportunity to start a

club or committee. Examples of those started are

library, literacy, service, garden, travelers, nurses,

entertainment and welcome committees.

Here you can be as private as you want in your

own apartment or become active in the community.

If you’re bored or lonely, it’s your own fault.

I have been here a little over three years and feel

this is one of my best decisions that I have ever

made.

The upstate New York area enjoys a rich cultural heritage: a tapestry of 400 years of interplay between Native American, Dutch, English and German traditions. Their customs layered upon one another and interacting with each other have contributed to a culture unique in the nation.Topics to be included in the order they will be presented in this 6-week series will be: our Native Americans and how they interacted with the Dutch, English and French who were involved in the rich fur trade; the diff erent building techniques used in the homes of the English and Dutch and how they diff ered fr om each other and the surprising role slavery played in these households; German homes of Ulster County and the Mohawk Valley (many built in stone) and their rich interior design; our local Shaker communities bringing their unique religion and design fr om England and open hearth cooking, recipes and food preservation (including the invention of the all important tin can) fr om all these distinctive cultures.Marilyn Sassi is currently an adjunct instructor at Schenectady County Community College and Hudson Valley Community College. Live Well Age Well

The Connected Life Program focuses on

highlighting the four key aspects we believe are a

vital part of a healthy, happy, and balanced life.

Residents are able to choose activities and programs

that complement their personal tastes in Health &

Fitness, Lifelong Learning, Community Activities,

and Leisure & Recreation. The best part? All

programs are free for our residents along with a daily

continental breakfast.

This includes all of our wellness activities, referrals

to community service providers, an array of

educational programs, choices of weekly recreational

events, regular social opportunities and gatherings,

transportation services for shopping, medical visits,

and so much more!

As seniors, sometimes we think we have

seen (and know) it all, but as John Wooden

once said “It’s what you learn after you

know it all that counts.” We have monthly

lectures and presentations on an array of

topics to stimulate the mind.

LEARNING

Being part of a community is more than

just being neighbors. It’s individuals

coming together to build each other up,

share similar interests, laugh together, and

help each other grow.

ACTIVITIES

Healthy living is an integral part of the

Connected Life Program. Whether you’re

a devoted yoga class-goer, enjoy taking

evening walks with a friend, love water

aerobics, or just need to meditate in the

morning before you start your day, our

Health program has something for you.

HEALTH

Summit residents are never without an

opportunity to have some fun. Whether

it’s trying their hand at a friendly game of

cards, unwinding in the salon, perfecting

their cross stitch, or just relaxing and

catching up with other residents.

LEISURE

love living at Glenwyck, see Laura
