As we get closer to the start of summer, June 21st, we can give thanks to God for the beauty of the seasons and the constant flow and rhythm of cre-ation. Summer is the time to plant both seeds and ideas which yield a harvest in the fall. God had blessed us with good soil and what we need to thrive in ND. I look forward to engaging some of you in the study of Scripture this fall. Over the

summer, I plan to read and research the words of St. Paul as captured in the Letter to the Romans. Imagine the harvest God offers those who believe in his promises—he offers nothing less than an abundant life. That abundant life awaits all of us who trust in our baptism and our faith. Often we’ll hear and read references to verses, from chapter 13 of Romans, in pub-lic discourse. However, like other passages from the Bible the context matters. Like, what was going on in Paul’s world when he was inspired to write to that audience of early Christians? Or how does chapter 13 connect with the rest of the message Paul shared in the Letter to the Romans? Friends, we are hearing much about the current immigration policies of the US and the reaction from different political and religious groups. As a nation of immigrants we are confronted with our history which fos-tered assimilation of many cultures, yet current world economics and political movements, America First, now discourage the same welcome to newcomers. How is it that the same welcoming mindset which made America great, can now be seen as threat? It is ironic to me that as Americans we can see immigrants as a great in-convenience when our standard of living has had such a great effect on nature and the world. Sea levels, world wide, are expected to rise 3 feet by 2100 based on sur-veys of the ice melting in the poles. That means a loss of homes for people living in some of the poorest nations on earth. How can we not feel some compassion for those effected by climate change? How can we not feel some compassion for those seeking a better life somewhere else? I don’t know the answers, but a me first mindset doesn’t agree with the Gospel of Jesus Christ that stresses care of the least of these. I won’t interpret Romans 13 here in this newsletter (“let every person be subject to the governing authori-ties....”) we’ll take that on in the fall so stay tuned. But I will say now that we need to know Scripture as part of our faith and as part of our being responsible citizens of the US. It is worth our investment of time and pray-er, because we have the Holy Spirit to guide us to know the meaning of the words printed in the Bible. Martin Luther, John Wesley and others have been inspired by Paul’s words in his letter to the Romans. I pray for the same thing to happen to our congregation. It isn’t enough for us to simply accept the policies of our nation’s leaders without scrutinizing and listening for the voice of God revealed through Scripture and faith. We can be proud of being an American, being a person of cer-tain cultural ancestry, but much much more we are citizens of God’s kingdom that is here and not yet fully present. Whatever views you have about immigration, Scripture is what God has given us as part of our experience of faith. Faith as guided by the Spirit gives meaning to the words in the Bible so it becomes the Word to us. The Word is what enables us to hear God’s thoughts, God’s take on us and all creation. Blessings on the joys of this season of growing, Pastor Jim

St. Olaf donates items to local foster care

Pictured are the workers with the much appreciated donated items for our foster children. We appreciate St. Olaf's willingness to help our kids with necessary items when they are separated from their families. Be-ing separated from your family is very traumatic and having a bag, some personal items is very comforting to little ones and older children as well. The items were collected on Faith in Action Day.
