A collaborative project betweenUWIC’s Widening Access Team andEnglish Language Training Centre(ELTC) has provided first-class andaccessible learning opportunities forminority communities in Cardiff.

The ‘Preparing for International English Language TestingSystem’ programme, delivers bespoke English Languageclasses for refugees and asylum seekers at community venuesand has helped to raise the aspirations of non-traditionallearners, removing many of the barriers to education that theyface.

Mohammed Abdeltam, who left Sudan in 2006, provided hisreasons for attending the classes, he said: “I really want toimprove my English language skills so that I can continue myeducation. I already have qualifications in Dental Technologybut I have to pass this certificate so that I can enter university.”

“At first I found the course quite difficult but the tutor hasbeen very helpful and I really enjoy it now. It has improved mycommunication skills and I’ve also met lots of new people fromdifferent backgrounds.”

As well as developing the confidence and self-belief of theparticipants, several learners who have completed theprogramme, which is funded by UWIC’s Centre for Personal &Professional Development, have successfully accesseduniversity courses in South Wales.

The project, which is supported by Refugee Voice Wales andthe Welsh Refugee Council, has recently been short-listed for‘Widening Participation Initiative of the Year’ at the TimesHigher Education magazine’s 2010 annual awards.
