Summer Reading and Math Calendars

Dear Parents & Caregivers,

During the summer months, it is crucial for children to continue to read daily in

order for them to sustain their academic skills. Studies have shown that students

who read during the summer can actually improve their reading skills. It is

important that students are encouraged to read and understand books that are

suitable to their level of comprehension. However, students entering grade one

may not be able to read the selections independently. You are encouraged to

read the selections to, or with, your child.

To support the incoming first grade students and their skills over the summer, I

have put together Summer Reading Homework and Summer Math Homework

Calendars. These are mandatory homework assignments and will be collected

when your child returns to school in August.

For every day that your child reads, help your child to record the title of the

book on the calendar. (I will be looking especially for the books from the

summer required reading list and the books from the student free choice lists in

their calendars.) However, you should also feel free to choose books from any

genre to stretch or match your child’s interest. At the conclusion of each month

your child can record his/her favorite book read and you will sign off.

The math calendars provide ideas for different math activities each day. Your

child needs to indicate the activities completed with a check in the box. When

school begins, they will bring the reading calendars, the math calendars and

the math workbox papers in to show me their reading and math efforts. One

math task requires your child to make their own number book, please feel free

to use any type of art supplies, scrapbooking paper, stickers, stamps etc. for this

assignment.

Please begin working next week and begin logging your child’s efforts on the

June calendars. Please post the July, August calendars and the book list

somewhere in your home – like the refrigerator or on a corkboard so you will

remember to actively complete the calendars with your child throughout the

next 10 weeks of summer.

All six calendar pages (three for reading and three for math) will be collected on

the first week of school and will be counted as the first six QUIZ GRADES for

Trimester 1.

The goal of the summer reading program is to foster a love of reading and to

maintain skills over the summer vacation. When children struggle with reading,

modifications and supports should be used to help ensure success. Your local

public library is a tremendous resource and can provide a great deal of

assistance in making book choices. The public libraries also provide a number of

wonderful programs for children.

Best wishes for an enjoyable summer!
