Reading Activities Read A Book!!

Complete a fun, well-created activity as it relates to your book. Include ~Title of Book, Author’s Name, Your Name, and Date.

1. Create a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting 2 book characters, 2 book settings, you

and a book character, a book character with a biblical character, or a book setting with your

local setting.

2. Create a Concentration game. Choose 10 or more interesting words from your book. Write a

word on each index card. Then write the definitions on 10 different cards. Give game to a

friend.

3. Make a T-chart. On the left side of your chart, list five or more facts from your story. On the

right side of the chart, list 5 or more opinions.

4. Write a letter to the author or a friend explaining why you liked your book. Be sure to

include all of the parts of a letter.

5. Make a book report sandwich. Draw, color, and cut out a brown bun (title of book, author’s

name, and your name); green lettuce ( picture of favorite scene); red tomato (description of

character); yellow cheese (description of setting); and brown burger summary).

6. Pretend to be a publicist for the book. Write and persuade other children to read the story.

7. Pretend to be the author. Write three paragraphs explaining why you wrote the story.

8. Compose 8 or more questions to ask the main character. Write the character’s response to

each question. The questions and answers should reflect that you have read the story.

9. Create a “Ten Facts About _____”(title of book). List the facts you learned from reading the

book. Facts must be in complete sentences and include details you didn’t know before

reading the book.

10. Write a poem/poems about the book you read---haiku, ballad, limerick, couplet, etc.

11. Write a summary of the beginning and middle parts of the story. Make up a new and exciting

ending.

12. Create an ABC book. Draw a picture beginning with a word or detail from your story. Write

a letter for each picture. This can be from many books.

13. Draw your hand. Write an important statement on each finger.

14. Make a bookmark. Illustrate a character or setting.

15. Prepare a paper scroll using information and scenes from the story.

16. Make a time line of events in the life of the main character.

17. Describe an experience that you have had that was like the experience of a character.

18. Divide your paper into sections. Write a vowel in each section. List words with long and/or

short AEIOU sounds.

19. Read a Fairy Tale. Illustrate and explain each element: MAGIC, THINGS HAPPENING IN

3’s, GOOD AND BAD CHARACTERS, AND HAPPY ENDING.

20. Divide paper into sections. Find words for each: 4 or 5 syllable words, contractions,

compound words, prefixes, suffixes and plurals. Write a summary using some of these words.

21. Design a Thumb character. Color thumb with a colorful marker, press thumb on white paper.

Draw body parts of the main character. Cut out clothes, shoes, hair, etc. Write a paragraph

describing the main character.

22. Before reading the story, write a paragraph telling what you think the story is about and why.

Read the story. Now write what actually happened in the story-beginning, middle, and end.

23. Write the recipe given: ½ cup title (original and made up title), 2 cups plot (what happened in

the story), 1 teaspoon character (characteristics of character), 2 tablespoons of excitement

(what was exciting), and ½ cup opinion (how do you feel about the story). Under each

heading, write information gathered from your book.

24. Create a map of the setting. Include a map key, compass, streets, buildings, etc. Explain why

you included the various symbols on your map. If desired, write questions for someone to

answer. Example-which street runs north and south? What is south of the main character’s

house?

25. Summarize and change the story using YOU as the main character.

26. Write and ACROSTIC poem demonstrating your understanding of the sequence of events in

the story.

27. Draw a circle on paper. Draw lines extending from the circle. Inside the circle, explain the

main idea. On the lines, write supporting details.

28. Draw a flow map. Arrange the story in sequential order.

29. Make a T-chart. On the left side, list the Causes. On the right side, list the Effects.

30. Create a Find a Word of the story. Write a paragraph explaining why these words were

chosen.

31. Create a crossword puzzle.

32. Find and write similes and metaphors.

33. Write a movie script of your story. Include real life movie stars.

34. Write for the Commercial Appeal and include information based on your book.

35. Turn your book into a comic book for a younger child with illustrations and bubbles.

36. Write a TV Commercial advertising favorite parts of the book. Use celebrities of locals or

both.

37. Create a picture book for younger children. Draw colorful pictures and use age appropriate

vocabulary.
