From early childhood to adult learning, VAM is an inclusive learning environment that explores the transformative power of music. Our proven programs and methods have produced some of Canada’s most acclaimed musicians in addition to a 49-year alumni database filled with music lovers.

VAM’s hand-selected faculty is comprised of Vancouver’s finest musicians and educators from organizations such as Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Opera, and UBC School of Music.

Private Lessons VAM’s faculty roster contains internationally recognized educators and Vancouver’s leading performers providing expert instruction for all ages and skill levels. VAM lesson packages provide flexibility allowing scheduling at the mutual convenience of the student and teacher.

Private, Semi-Private, and Small Group Classes VAM’s private, semi-private, and small group classes offer the perfect supplement to performance studies in a variety of innovative programs with small class sizes, personalized teaching approaches, and flexible scheduling.

Music and Beyond: Integrated Studies in Music and Elementary-Level Math, Science, and Language Arts

This popular program exclusive to VAM engages both sides of the brain through a combination of music and academic activities that develop cognitive and rational thinking while fostering natural curiosity for discovery and creativity:

• Brain Boosters:supplements music studies with math in a whole-minded approach to develop comprehensive learning.

• Young Readers & Writers: the world of literature is waiting to be discovered by your child in this program that will introduce grammar, reading comprehension and writing. In addition to fiction reading and writing, students will explore the biographies of different composers and music history to aid in the preparation of RCM music theory and history examinations.

• Reading & Writing Circle (RWC): continues to build on students’ knowledge of the different genres of fiction and also explores non-fiction works. Students will research composers and music history to further their creative literacy while acquiring a deeper understanding of music and literature. RWC provides practical skills to help master the music history and writing components of RCM examination requirements.

• Learning Mandarin Through Music: fun-filled music and language games will introduce essential Mandarin language skills by speaking in correct tones, recognizing graphic symbols, and analyzing speech patterns in a class that incorporates rhythm, song, expressive movement, and instrument playing. No prior Mandarin knowledge required.

CompositionCombine your knowledge of music theory with your desire to create! Feel the support and camaraderie of fellow aspiring composers in a supportive group environment where compositional ideas, techniques and styles are discussed and applied.

ConductingA perfect opportunity for aspiring conductors or for those interested in enhancing their current skills. Classes will focus on baton technique, score reading, orchestration and choral/orchestral conducting styles.

Jazz & Pop SongwritingDiscover text setting, harmony, and storytelling while exploring unique and compelling voices within the popular medium. Topics include writing exercises, listening, and analysis of songs in addition to ongoing discussion of students’ work in a supportive, collaborative environment.

RCM Music Theory & HistoryVAM’s private, semi-private, and small group classes in RCM Theory and History provide an excellent means of enhancing essential musicianship skills that greatly spur progress for instrumental training. VAM shares a close institutional relationship with the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) that includes our official designation as Vancouver West exam centre.

Early Music Education: Summer Music SafariInstructors: Chloé Hurst (Department Head); Adam JunkRecommended for: Ages 3 months - 7 yearsClass Times: SESSION 1: July 10, 17, 24SESSION 2: August 7, 14, 21Level I: 10:00-10:45am (ages 3-18 months, with parent/guardian participation) Level II: 11:00-11:45am (ages 18 months - 3 years, with parent/guardian participation) Level III: 12:30-1:15pm (ages 3-4 years)Level IV: 1:30-2:15pm (ages 5-7 years)Fee: $45 per sessionClass Description: Join your child in their first exploration of the musical world! Levels I and II of Summer Music Safari use song and movement to create the foundation of musical training, developing coordination, confidence, and the ability to work with others. In Levels III and IV, students will build the essential tools needed musical discovery including reading, ear training, an introduction to instruments, and composer knowledge while diving into musicianship skills with elements of the Orff and Kodaly methods.

Suzuki ProgramBased on the belief that children learn a musical instrument as naturally as they learn to speak, the Suzuki method is widely accepted as one of the most effective forms of music instruction. VAM was one of the first North American institutions to incorporate Suzuki and has since been recognized as a global leader in the teaching method. Parents are required to participate in the learning experience by attending lessons and group classes and reinforcing the learning points with daily home practice.

Recommended for: Ages 4-6

Class Times: July 16-20, Monday-Friday, 10:00-11:00am

Class Description: Watch your child discover something new every day as they prepare for the journey of musical instruction! This course will incorporate the Suzuki philosophy of education with a hands-on introduction to a variety of instruments in a sampling of the many opportunities VAM’s Suzuki programs have to offer.

Summer Chamber Music Often described as a conversation between friends, find out why chamber music is regarded as the pinnacle musical experience as you perform masterpieces under the expertise of VAM’s distinguished faculty.

Chamber MusicVAM’s chamber music program is the perfect opportunity for young musicians to experience the communal nature of making music, developing the essential skills of communication and collaboration. Recommended for: Ages 7-13 (no musical, instrumental or dramatic knowledge necessary to participate)

Class Description: Kick back and enjoy rocking out with the Rock Band Glee Camp at VAM! In this camp, students will be introduced to rock band instruments, write and perform their own songs and one-act plays, and create and design their very own band name, t-shirt, and logo.

Summer Registration and School Policies

REGISTRATION: Register online at vam.ca; tuition and fees must be paid in full upon registration.

PAYMENT OPTIONS: Payment may be made by cash, cheque, VISA, or MasterCard. A $35 service charge will be applied for any returned cheques.

Payment plan options via post-dated cheques are available. Please contact [email protected] for more information.

PRIVATE LESSONS Lessons are offered: • During summer session dates of July 3 - August 31 • Scheduling is decided based on the mutual convenience of the teacher and student • A trial lesson may be scheduled based on the hourly lesson fee rates

LESSON ATTENDANCE Student Absences: Missed lessons by the student will only be made up under special circumstances at the discretion of the teacher.

Instructor Absences: If an instructor is absent, every effort will be made to reschedule the lesson at a time that is suitable for both the instructor and student. If the instructor is unable to make up a lesson, the student will receive a refund or credit to be applied to future lessons or classes.

MINIMUM ENROLLMENT: Courses listed in this brochure may not be available if they do not meet the minimum requirement of enrollment.

CHANGING INSTRUCTORS: It is highly recommended that students do not change instructors during the middle of a term. In such cases, the Executive Director must grant approval before any transfer can be made.

WITHDRAWALS AND REFUNDS: Group Classes: Eligibility for refunds and/or credits with respect to withdrawals will be determined on a case-by-case basis by the Registrar. If a student’s behaviour is deemed consistently disruptive to a class, the instructor will have the right to deny entry to the class after consultation with the parents.

PRIVATE LESSONS: If a student wishes to withdraw from private lessons during the summer session, two weeks’ notice to the Instructor is required. The date of notice will be the date the Instructor submits to the Registrar.

SUMMER BUILDING HOURS • Monday-Friday: 9:00am to 9:00pm • Saturday: 9:00am to 5:00pm • Sunday: closed

SAFETY AND SECURITY • Security cameras located in interior hallways and exterior doorways • Private security patrol • First aid trained staff on site

DIRECTIONS VAM is located at Vanier Park at Kits Point in a cultural oasis that includes the Bard on the Beach, Museum of Vancouver, H. R. MacMillan Space Centre, Maritime Museum, and City Archives.

PARKING VAM patrons have exclusive access to 100 free parking stalls as well as a three-car drop-off/pick-up area directly in front of the school. In the event of VAM’s parking lot being at capacity, two-hour free parking is in close proximity as well as pay parking across from the school.

TRANSIT VAM is walking distance from downtown across the Burrard Street Bridge. Convenient bus routes include the 2, 22, 4, 44, and 84.
