2012 ISB SUMMER School

2

Welcome to ISB summer school, where everyone is included, challenged, and successful, while having fun! As usual, there will be many interest and sports activities for the 3 to 18 year-olds, “just for fun” and “for credit” options for the 12-18 year olds, as well as activities to tempt adults. Whether it is learning English or French, playing sports or a musical instrument, getting creative in art, baton twirling, dance or digital photography, there is an activity for everyone. If you are new to Brussels, your children will make friends while the family is settling in. If you have visitors, summer school offers an option for the young ones. As a parent, you may be assured that your children are safe, active and happy in our programme. Summer school is open to ISB and non-ISB families, to English and non-English speakers. Happy Summer at ISB!

Welcome to ISBSummer School!

Prices based on minimum 6 participants.

There are four math courses offered in summer school: Algebra 1, Algebra II Tutor, Geometry and Trigonometry. Courses meet daily for three hours over a three-week period (45 class hours + work outside of class).

Summer School 2012 11

Students earn ½ unit of High School credit for each course successfully completed. Grades earned in the course by rising 10th graders and above can be included in the GPA. To receive credit, students need to be present for the entire summer school course, complete all assignments and successfully take all tests and the final exam. Based on the report from the teacher, the course is reported on the Power School transcript. For example, if a student completes Algebra 1 in Summer School of 2012, this would go on the transcript: Summer School Algebra 1 with the grade and 0.5 of a credit.

Using summer school courses to refresh previously learned skills before a course or before a placement test is encouraged. However, when a student already has received full credit for the course, additional credit for the same course will not be given.

Algebra I: June 25 – July 13; 12:30 - 15:30 €730 per course. (Minimum 6 students)Algebra 1 is the second year of the two-year program to complete Algebra 1 started in Introduction to Algebra in 9th grade. It is an extension of that course and extends the skills deeper. Algebra 1 can be used as a repeat course if a student was not successful in a regular level Algebra 1 class. Algebra 1 in summer school can also be used to refresh algebraic skills and concepts for students who did successfully complete Algebra 1. It is not designed for students who have only completed pre-algebra or its equivalent.

Algebra II Tutor non-credit course: June 25 - July 13; 09:00 - 12:00€730 per course (Minimum: 6 students). This special course is for students who are now in Algebra I and would like to start IB Math Studies next year. It will review some of the basics of the topics necessary for IB Math Studies.

Geometry: June 25 – July 13; 09:00 - 12:00 €730 per course. (Minimum 6 students)Geometry teaches the skills and applications of a regular geometry course with minimal emphasis on proofs. It is designed for students who have not studied a formal year of geometry but will be taking standardized tests like the SAT that require knowledge of geometry. Plane geometry is emphasized with a short introduction to solid and analytical geometry. Any student who has completed Algebra 1 is eligible to take Geometry in summer school.

Trigonometry: June 25 – July 13; 09:00 - 12:00 €730 per course. (Minimum 6 students) Trigonometry is designed for students who have completed Algebra II and have been recommended by their teacher to move into the IB Standard Level. This summer school course is considered a necessary prerequisite to such a move. It begins with the study of circular functions, their inverses, and their graphs. Trigonometric functions are used to solve identities, equations, right and oblique triangles and real-life problems.
