“Severe weather warn-ing: winds of 20-30 mph with gusts of 40 mph,” the

sweet siren’s song of the kite surfer. On a day like this, you can find these people at the far end of the two-dollar park-ing lot north of Surfers Point. They jump the parking barrier to inflate their kites and launch

off into the water. Seemingly with no regard for

the work week, they flock to the beach. It doesn’t matter wheth-er it is an innocuous Sunday afternoon or one o’clock on some idle Wednesday; if there is wind, they come.

Thom Hill, 42, is one of those thrill seekers who can’t resist the call of the swirling winds and white-capped waves, work-day or no. Self-employed, this surfer of 25 years was beguiled

by the idea of strapping him-self to a “stunt kite on steroids” some five years ago.

“It was a natural progression from surfing,” says Thom, “and Ventura is probably one of the top places on the West Coast [to kite surf].”

This is the precipice of the sweet spot for kite surfing. From April to October, the consistent winds of the afternoon are rife for wrangling, and the iron-constitut-ed men of this 10-year-old sport

take full advantage of that time.Even though it has become

safer, this sport is not for the faint of heart or the thin of wal-let. With equipment costs run-ning as much as $3,000, these water bugs have the money and the skill to surf north of the point. Ventura is one of the more advanced launch and kite surf-ing spots, given the hazards and crowds the waters have to offer.

ers has a way of policing their own, though. Unknown faces are given the rundown on how it is “we surf here,” which is always respectful of the surf zone at the point and of other kiters. The inex-perienced are generally told that fairer waters can be found else-where, or coached on what they need to look out for if they choose to cut their teeth on Ventura’s surf.

Ripping across the water and then tacking back into the wind, kite surfers can use waves only two feet high to launch themselves 30 feet into the air. These men, ages 20 up to 60, use both the winds and the waves to surf in that illusive third dimension. Though the occasional wild gust can drag a kiter 50 feet, face first, through the water chas-ing his board like a bad Benny Hill sketch, Thom will tell you, as he buckles his harness, “Kite surfing, consistently, you can have a good time, every time.” F Surfers Point is best for the experienced kite surfer, as winds and wavescan really test the skills

of an amateur.

About four weeks ago, I was planning a trip to Santa Cruz Island in the Channel Islands National Park, when

I bumped into a near and dear friend — we had known each other since high school. I was talking to her about the normal, every-day things and spoke of my upcoming trip. A 29-year-old mother of two who had never lived anywhere but Ventura County told me she had never been out to the islands.

“Tsk, tsk!” I told her. “How can you live here your whole life and never take a trip to the islands?”

I thought perhaps she was an anomaly, but I was wrong. Turns out, there are many locals — too many, in fact — who have never enjoyed racing a pod of dolphins to and from the islands, catching a whale breaching, a breezy walk around Anacapa Island or a rugged climb around Santa Cruz Island. It never ceases to amaze me when people speak of their trips around the country — or the world, for that matter — who have never taken a day to enjoy the world-renowned Channel Islands.

Dolphins as far as the eye can seeI must admit that I was quite spoiled growing up. My mother had lots of friends in lots of places, and no matter what was happening in our life, she always knew someone who had a boat. And when all else failed, good ol’ Island Packers out of the Ventura Harbor was there to save the day.

Little did I know, however, of my mom’s die-hard affinity for dolphins. It wasn’t until much later in my life that I realized how much she loved Flipper and his pals. That can be seen in the several hundred dolphin sculptures, shower curtains, toilet seats and salt and pepper shakers. But when every-thing is said and done, there is nothing like the real thing, and she would be the first to admit that.

So when it came time to celebrate her 60th birthday and hold our family reunion, our trip to Santa Cruz Island a couple of years ago was something beyond special. Given how unique it was that all of our family members were at the same place at the same time, the mega-pod of dolphins that cruised alongside our Island Packers boat made our reunion something no one would forget.

While I had seen dolphins make daring leaps out of the water, enjoying the wake of the boat, it was rather surprising when several of them started to do a dolphin dance — gyrat-

ing straight up out of the water as if grooving to some unknown beat. It was quite fascinating.

Something for everyoneWhile no one can promise you will see gyrating dolphins, every trip I have taken to the islands has been unique. Although the formula is typically the same — first you board,

then you cruise out to the islands, have a picnic, then go for a hike — the experiences always differ. Having explored the islands as a kid, being a grown up now really puts things in perspective, and it is some-thing that all kids should get to expe-rience. No offense, but Disneyland and Magic Mountain will always have fast rides and cotton candy. The

Santa Cruz’s rugged cliffs and picturesque views are something to behold for visitors and campers on the island.

Channel Islands offer much more — a peaceful environment for adults and a serene place to explore for the kids. Nature at its best. And don’t forget about the dolphins, seals, whales, bald eagles, island foxes and so much more than staying on the “mainland” will be able to offer in one trip. Blue whales, the largest of all whales, also migrate in the Santa Barbara Channel, starting in June through as late as November. If you are really adventurous, you can bring a kayak or go diving in the

kelp beds. F

Island Packer Cruises offers trips to Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel and Santa Barbara Islands. It also features whale watching cruises. This year, the company will be offering a new excursion aboard the Bill of Rights tall ship. Prices vary but typically start around $65 per adult. For more information, go to www.islandpackers.com or call 642-6393. Group and school trip discounts are available.

Ventura County boasts out-standing picnicking oppor-tunities. Many sites feature

ocean views, green hillsides or rush-ing rivers.

The Ventura County Parks Department operates some of the most popular picnic venues, includ-ing Foster Park along the Ventura River near Casitas Springs, Steckel Park near Santa Paula and Ojai’s Soule Park.

Ron Van Dyck manages the sys-tem and says the department is also proud of Camp Comfort, south of Ojai, where a new concessionaire has reversed years of neglect and a bad reputation that came with it.

“Unfortunately, we lost a lot of cus-tomers and they haven’t come back

yet,” says Van Dyck. “It’s a beautiful park with the trees, the shade, lots of grass. It’s just gorgeous. It’s a little jewel that nobody knows about.”

Most county-run parks have walk-up picnic tables, and many have large, covered group pavilions that can be reserved for a fee.

Several cities, park districts and the state government also maintain parks popular with picnickers, some with reservable sites.

The Conejo Recreation and Park District offers numerous parks in Thousand Oaks with varied picnick-ing opportunities, including Conejo Community Park and Wildwood Park.

Camarillo’s are managed by the Pleasant Valley Recreation and Park District, including rustic Camarillo Grove Park.

Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District manages picnic areas

in the communities of Simi Valley and Oak Park.

Web sites with photos of park amenities and information about reservations are available for most

picnic areas. The two most popular city-operat-

ed ocean-front parks are Marina Park in Ventura and Oxnard Beach Park.

A pirate-themed playground is popular at Oxnard Beach Park. Romeo Porte enjoyed the ocean air during a recent picnic with his fam-ily. “It’s quiet and nice,” says Porte. “In the summertime you don’t have to run your air conditioner; you can just walk to the beach from here and feel the breeze.”

Picnicking is popular at Ventura’s Arroyo Verde Park, tucked in a val-ley that feels far from town. Marci Lorance and her family recently cel-

ebrated a child’s birthday there and ate ahi tacos in addition to more tra-ditional picnic fare like hamburgers. They also enjoyed hiking and riding ice blocks down a grassy slope.

Lorance says it’s a great way to get away from civilization. “I like anything that doesn’t involve tech-nology distracting everybody,” says Lorance. “People are actually inter-acting with people, which is a nice change of pace from everywhere else in the world right now.” F

DON’TMAKE

USCITEYOU!

DRIVE SAFELY,LIVES DEPEND ON IT!

What You Can Do:

Drive the speed limit. Driving the speedlimit allows you the necessary time to react toan emergency situation and decreases yourchance of getting a ticket.Let aggressive drivers pass you. Don’tallow other drivers to dictate how you drive.Slow down during bad weather. Drivingslower than the speed limit on rainy days ordays with poor visibility.Leave early. Make sure you have plenty oftime to get to your destination so you don’t feelpressured to speed or disobey traffic signals.Don’t tailgate other vehicles. Allow moredistance between you and the vehicle aheadof you. This will give you more time to reactto an emergency situation and it increasesyour stopping distance.

JUST DRIVE!Collisions Down

Dramatically in OxnardInattention continues to be a

contributing factor in Oxnard trafficcollisions. Talking on a Cell phone,

texting, running late, and otherwisenot focusing on driving are all

things drivers can control. So, when you are behind the wheel,

hiking and Bird WatchingThe beauty of hiking is that you don’t need anything

but feet (though a bottle of water is nice) in order to get going. But you do need to know where to go.
