DEAR FRIENDS// WelcomeWe have a tremendous 2014 Summer Festival in store, with world-class artists and masterpieces both familiar and rare.

We will be performing Stravinsky’s revolutionary masterpiece The Soldier’s Tale in its entirety on July 11th, an event not to be missed. Our mini vocal festival July 18-23 will offer beloved works such as Brahms’ charming Liebeslieder Waltzes and Vaughan Williams’ poignant On Wenlock Edge.

This is our eighth season that the Commissioning Club has brought a brand new piece to life. This year we’re thrilled to present the premiere, on July 14, of a piano trio by one of America’s most accomplished young composers, Derek Bermel.

Other highlights include Schubert’s Octet, both of Mendelssohn’s glorious Piano Trios, two Brahms Piano Quartets, and Tchaikovsky’s epic Piano Trio.

We look forward to seeing you at Nordstrom Recital Hall in July for another summer of glorious music!

// 10 2014 Summer Festival

BION TSANG//artist spotlightAre there any pieces that you’re particularly looking forward to playing this summer?I’m very much looking forward to playing the Vaughan Williams Quintet (July 16). It’s one of the few pieces that I’ve actually recommended to the festival, and I’m so happy that James has programmed it! It’s an early work of Vaughan Williams’ in which he hasn’t quite established his own characteristic style, but the work is brilliantly crafted and full of energy and great melodies.

You’re taking part in the premiere of Derek Bermel’s Piano Trio (July 14). What is it like to prepare a brand new piece?Working with the unknown is always challenging and exciting! No matter how much time I spend studying the cello part and complete score, a new piece always feels foreign to me until I actually get the chance to read it through with the other musicians. At the same time, taking part in a world premiere typically means getting to work with the composer, which I find illuminating. Even though so many indications of mood and character can be written into the music, only the composer her/himself can tell the performers about the real intentions that drove the composition.

“Though nearly every seat in the auditorium was filled for the pre-concert recital, an even larger crowd packed the

hall for the concert proper.” The SunBreak

“The quartet pushed the pedal to the metal in the piece’s opening phrases and rarely looked back, keeping excitement

levels dialed up high for much of the performance.”

The SunBreak

“Thank you for a most wonderful concert yesterday, I enjoyed it tremendously!”
