FAQ1.What should I pack for my child’s day at camp?Students should bring a small labelled backpack with the following items: water, sunscreen, a hat, and rain gear (in order to be prepared for all types of weather).

2. What is the drop off and pick up process? Please bring your child to the rear school entrance by 9:00am. There is no supervised before camp care, so please do not drop off your child before 8:45am. If your child is participating in the afternoon camp only, please bring them to the rear school entrance no earlier than 12:00pm.When your child’s camp ends, they will be taken to the rear entrance to be signed out by a parent.

3. Can my child stay for the whole day? Yes. There is a half-day and a full-day option.

4. Is there before or after school care available to working parents? After camp care is available, but it must be reserved via the online registration.

5. How do I go about ordering lunch for my child? Lunch is ordered at the same time as camp registration. Each lunch has choices that will be sent by email the week before camp begins.

6. Can I make substitutes to the menu? There are choices for each menu, but unfortunately, substitutions cannot be made.

7. Can my child who is going into Grade 4 take a class intended for a Grade 1-3 student so that he can be with a friend? We ask that students remain with their age range as the camps have been designed for that age group.

8. What should I do if my child is sick and cannot attend camp? Please call the school to let the camp leaders know that your child will not be attending. Unfortunately, will cannot provide refunds or pro-rate camps for days missed.

Can my friend from another school sign up?Yes, absolutely! We welcome all students entering Grade 1 to 6 to our Summer Programmes.

Before registering, please read the following tips to make it easier for you to complete the registration process:

• If you have more than one child to register, please enter them all in the same session in order to receive the 10% sibling discount. You will need to enter information for each child one at a time.

• If you have registered before, you can retrieve your information with your email and password. If you no longer have your password, you can request a password reset. Please follow the prompts from Active Network.

Registration InformationMulgrave Summer Day Camps offer a wide range of camps for children entering Grades 1 to 6.

Morning camps will be held at the Mulgrave School campus. These indoor programmes are based around the arts, sciences, reading and writing or math skills.

- A healthy morning snack is provided- Morning camps run from 9:00am-12:00pm

Afternoon camps are all outside activities and involve field trips to parks and open spaces on the North Shore. Students must come prepared for wet weather as we will go outside, rain or shine!

- A healthy afternoon snack is provided- Afternoon camps run from 12:30pm-3:30pm

Please note that: - Morning and afternoon sessions may be combined for the full-day camp.- After camp care is available.- Lunch programmes are available for children participating in both morning and afternoon sessions.

Math & ScienceMath Games & Problem SolvingGrades 1 to 3Math games are a great way to spark kids’ interest in math without them even realising the extent of their learning! This camp is packed full of fun math games and logic puzzles that are appropriate for this age group and will extend and complement their school work. This is a ‘safe’ zone where students are able to develop without fear of failure. They will practise number bonds and math skills in a practical and exciting way so that everyday math is fun!

Week 1: 8:30am - 11:30am (July 7-11)

Math Rhymes, Songs and StoriesGrades 1 to 3This math camp is packed full of songs, stories and math games that are age-appropriate and, most importantly, fun! When learning new ideas, pneumonic devices can go a long way. In this camp, students will have the chance to explore numeracy concepts in the context of music and story-telling. In doing so, they will find it easier to access their knowledge of numbers. Students who join this camp will play with numbers and refresh their understanding of math concepts in an exciting and interactive way.

Week 2: 8:30am - 11:30am (July 14-18)

Be a Math WhizGrades 1 to 3What does it take to be a math whiz? Not much except a playful attitude and a desire to interact with numbers to see how they fit together. Join this camp to enjoy fun number games, logic puzzles and math riddles that will extend and complement students’ prior learning. You will practise number bonds and math skills that will provide a solid foundation for next year’s math learning and have a ton of fun while doing it!

Week 4: 8:30am - 11:30am (July 28-Aug 1)

George’s Marvellous Medicine, Chemistry & StoriesGrades 1 to 3Roald Dahl’s classic story of marvellous mixtures is the inspiration behind this chemistry camp. Kids will come into the lab, become chemists and learn all about solutions, mixtures and compounds. They will make silly putty, liquid sunsets, indicator solution and more. Become a chemical detective and identify chemicals and reactions that pop, fizz and foam.

Week 1: 8:30am - 11:30am (July 7-11)

Master the Kingdoms - Fun with ZoologyGrades 1 to 3Do you love animals and want to find out more? This camp is for budding zoologists and animal lovers. Games and activities are all about animals as campers extend their knowledge and have a whole lot of fun. Find out about the fastest, the slowest, the biggest and the smallest as well as everything in between.

Week 2: 8:30am - 11:30am (July 14-18)

Looking at Colours with Science & ArtGrades 1 to 3This hands-on science camp is jam-packed with experiments and activities all about colour. Do you know how to create a sunset with milk? Or how to make invisible ink? Well these and many other mysteries will be revealed in this colourful camp.

Week 4: 8:30am - 11:30am (July 28-Aug 1)

Ace It! First Steps in AlgebraGrades 4 to 6This camp is an excellent opportunity to learn about the unknown! Algebra sounds like a difficult concept, but it’s not hard at all. Students who have good basic skills will enjoy this enrichment camp to extend their learning.

Ace It! Basic Math Skills & BeyondGrades 4 to 6This camp is an excellent opportunity to reinforce and extend math skills including times tables and number bonds and mental arithmetic. Students will compete to acheive their own personal best. As well as pencil and paper problem solving, students will be working with hands-on manipulatives and games to significantly improve their performance and increase their understanding.

Week 1: 8:30am - 11:30am (July 7-11)

Code-Breaker! Grades 4 to 6This camp will allow campers to unleash their inner code-breaker! Looking at a combination of codes such as Semaphore and Morse code, campers will learn historical information about each code, how it works, and then take part in fun activities using the code. This is a great camp for kids who love puzzles.

Week 2: 8:30am - 11:30am (July 14-18)

Puzzles & Logic GamesGrades 1 to 3Puzzles and logic games are a fresh way to build essential math skills that students need. This camp is jam-packed full super-fun and motivating games and activities to reach even the most reluctant math student. All activities are appropriate for this age group and will extend and consolidate what is done in school. Come and join us for a math refresher that will have you exploring the mathematical possibilities of the world around you.

Week 3: 8:30am - 11:30am (July 21-25)

Study Skills that Work!Grades 4 to 6Learn how to make the very most of your time in class. Use different strategies to help you remember important facts and to do your best in examinations and tests. The strategies in this camp focus on organizational skills, time management, improving reading comprehension, vocabulary development, communication, how to study for tests effectively, memorization and more!

Week 2: 8:30am - 11:30am (July 14-18)

Blitzkreig ChessGrades 4 to 6Are you a chess master or don’t you know a pawn from a rook? This morning chess camp will expand

your skills no matter if you are a beginner or an advanced player. Learn the basics or maybe some of the gambits used by famous players – all are welcome!

Week 4: 8:30am - 11:30am (July 28-Aug 1)

Young ThinkersGrades 4 to 6Young Thinkers is a morning camp that uses thought experiments, debates and discussions to sharpen students’ analytical skills, introduce them to new ideas, and give them the confidence they need to argue effectively. The subjects we discuss will range from current issues, to moral problems from everyday life. There is no right answer – only the ability to ask the right questions, a range of methods to tackle them with, and the requirement to think logically and give reasons for your arguments. This camp is a must for any future debating champion!

Reading & Writing EnrichmentGrades 1 to 3By sharing stories and poems, playing word games and singing songs, participants in this activity will explore the literacy around them and begin to develop their own voice through the written word. All students will explore a wealth of favourite authors such as Eric Carle, David McKee, Leo Lionni and Robert Munsch to inspire and intrigue them. Students will complete a portfolio of writing to celebrate at home.

Week 1: 8:30am - 11:30am (July 7-11)Week 3: 8:30am - 11:30am (July 21-25)

Expanding Vocabulary through Games & StoriesGrades 1 to 3Vocabulary is the key to great reading and writing, and this camp is all about cultivating a love of words! In addition learning more words in context, students will also develop an understanding of the word base they already have though stories and word play.

Week 2: 8:30am - 11:30am (July 14-18)

A Book of Your OwnGrades 1 to 3This morning programme will have your creativity bursting onto the page in book form! Students will be making small books, each with a different focus and theme. Using a number of different techniques, students will learn how to structure their stories and also how to enrich their vocabulary. Every student will finish this camp loving the books that they have made and feeling proud of their achievement. Students in this camp must be fluent in English.

Week 4: 8:30am - 11:30am (July 28-Aug 1)

Banish Boring Words - Creative WritingGrades 4 to 6 This camp is focused on expanding vocabulary and writing with words that excite the senses and sparkle on the page! Be ready for lots of word exploration, including some etymology and investigation of foreign words that have been adopted into the English language. Be warned - your writing may improve beyond belief!

Week 1: 8:30am - 11:30am (July 7-11)Perfect Paragraph WritingGrades 4 to 6Is your paragraph writing less than perfect? If that is the case, this camp is for you! Here you will learn how to write a perfect paragraph with correct structure and varied sentences that interest and engage the reader!

Speaking English - Speaking & Listening for ELLGrades 4 to 6This is a morning camp for ESL beginners. They will improve their vocabulary and conversation skills through structured speaking activities and build vocabulary through games and stories. Taught by a certified TEOSL instructor, this camp is perfect for students who want to have fun improving their English language proficiency.

Week 3: 8:30am - 11:30am (July 21-25)

Creating English - Creative Writing for ELLGrades 4 to 6This morning camp for intermediate ESL students focusses on writing and reading comprehension. Students will create written pieces based on traditional English folktales and fairytales. Taught by a certified TEOSL instructor, this camp is perfect for students who want to have fun improving their English language proficiency.

In a relaxed, language-focussed setting, campers will experience the necessary skills to create delicious foods, and the vocabulary to discuss them! All levels of French are welcome.

Creative Structures in FrenchGrades 4 to 6Campers will come together to create and engineer structures. In a fun French setting, campers will discover how to build and create structures that can sustain their own weight and more! All levels of French are welcome.

Harry Potter en Francais - Wizarding in FrenchGrades 4 to 6If you are a Harry Potter fan who wants to improve your French in a fun and engaging way- this is the summer camp for you! Find out about the world of Harry Potter through a French lens.

Sing & Play in Chinese (Beginners)Grades 1 to 3This is a fun introduction to Mandarin Chinese for non-native speakers. Students will learn some basic characters, hear traditional Chinese stories and legends and learn some basic conversational Mandarin. This camp is a great introduction to Chinese for energetic kids who enjoy a hands-on approach to learning.

Spanish for BeginnersGrades 1 to 6This introduction to Spanish is perfect for students who are complete beginners. No previous knowledge of Spanish is required. Building Confidence with Drama & ImprovisationGrades 1 to 3Drama games are a great way to have fun while learning techniques that will help you have more confidence when speaking to others. Improvisational games also help to develop creativity. There will be lots of moving around in this camp, so loose, comfortable clothing and runners are a necessity.

Week 1: 12:15pm - 3:15pm (July 7-11)

Drama Games with Poetry & MusicGrades 1 to 3Drama games are a great way to have fun while learning techniques that will help you to be a better performer and gain confidence in daily life. Using poetry and music to create short skits, students will have fun exploring their creativity in this active camp. This camp does not involve any writing and is focused on oral presentation skills.

Week 3: 12:15pm - 3:15pm (July 21-25)

Sketching in the ForestGrades 1 to 3If finding a peaceful forest grove and sketching is your idea of a pleasant afternoon, then this is the camp for you! Students will learn about different sketching techniques and observation tips to help make those outdoor pieces some of your very best! On rainy days, this will be inside sketching, but bring a raincoat just in case.

World ArtGrades 1 to 3Come and explore different places through art: from your backyard to your city, to the fantastic realm of your dreams! Image, design and create through murals, mapping and collage. Reinvent existing places or conjure new ones! Let art be your guide and jump into a world all your own!

Week 3: 12:15pm - 3:15pm (July 21-25)

Learn to SewGrades 1 to 3Campers will learn the basics of sewing and beyond. Each student will take home a special hand-crafted item at the end of the week. It might be a rainbow hued patchwork pouch to keep special treasures or maybe a blanket for a favourite stuffy. Sewing is a life skill that is fun and useful. Boys and girls are welcome.

Week 2: 12:15pm - 3:15pm (July 14-18)

You Are What You Eat - Adventures with Nutrition & FoodGrades 1 to 3This is a science-based camp aimed at kids who care about what they eat. Not only will campers find out about what is in their lunchbox and where it came from, they will also look at what it means to eat a balanced diet. Science experiments involving food add a fun twist to this educational and practical camp.

Making Miniature Fairy GardensGrades 1 to 6While the fairies are away, you can make a miniature garden that any nature-loving fairy would adore. Using crafts and gardening supplies to create a miniature world, campers will love putting together a make-believe world all their own. We will be making miniature gardens from natural materials and embellishing them with tiny plants and ornaments. Maybe some fairy furniture, too! On rainy days, this will be an ‘undercover’ camp, but wear clothes that can get dirty!

Week 4: 12:15pm - 3:15pm (July 28 - Aug 1)

Abstract ArtGrades 4 to 6From Surrealism (Salvador Dali and Joan Miro) to Abstract Expressionism (Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko), to abstract comic books and found poetry, students in this class will explore the subtleties of abstract art. In art, the word “abstract” usually refers to an artwork’s appearance, but abstraction can also be a useful tool for approaching the ideas behind a piece of art. During this class, students will explore abstraction in both the formal and the conceptual sense through a variety of media, including painting, printmaking and collage.

Creating Short Films with iMovieGrades 4 to 6This camp will teach you the basics of filming and editing in iMovie. Campers will express their creativity through the visual medium of motion pictures and experience all elements of film production, including pre-production planning, script writing, story boards, costumes, props, camera work, and final editing. Each day explores a new genre of film. Participants need to bring an iPad with the iMovie and VidLib apps installed.

Social Consciousness & Skill Building

Being a Good Friend - Social Skills & Strategies for KidsGrades 1 to 3What does it mean to be a good friend? What can I do if someone is being mean to me? These are questions that all kids need help with at some time. This camp is all about developing confidence-building strategies to help kids stand up for themselves, as well as discovering ways to be thoughtful friends.

Week 4: 8:30am - 11:30am (July 28-Aug 1)

It’s Not Easy Being GreenGrades 4 to 6This morning camp focuses on community living and the impact of lifestyle on the environment. Activities that teach social and environmental awareness include learning about changes that can be made easily for a BIG green impact!

Secret Stuff with Papier MâchéGrades 4 to 6Papier Mâché is French for ‘chewed paper’ but rather than chewing, you will be building beautiful and useful articles from nothing more complicated than paper, cardboard and glue! Please come in clothes that can get dirty. From mysterious maps and hidden compartments, these papier mâché projects are guaranteed to keep kids’ private territory well hidden from prying eyes!

Kitchen ChemistryGrades 4 to 6The chemistry of food and cooking is in our everyday lives, and this camp provides an exciting context for some exciting experiments. Each day of camp deals with a new aspect of the chemistry of food and cooking. No budding scientist (or cook) will want to miss this fun camp!

You throw away the outside and cook the inside. Then you eat the outside and throw away the inside. What did you eat?

• Cancellation deadline for Summer Day Camps, Academic Enrichment Camps and Credit Courses is Friday, June 20, 2014.

• After this date, we are unable to provide a refund for cancellation. Please note any cancellations prior to June 20, 2014 will incur a $50 administration fee.

• Occasionally we have summer camps which do not meet minimum enrolment. If this occurs, you will be notified one week prior to the camp start date by email. You will be offered an alternative program or a full refund.

Outdoor GamesGrades 1 to 3This camp focuses on a variety of recreational games catered to the level and the interests of the group each week. Students will hone their ball handling skills, hand-eye coordination and agility in a variety of fun team games. Campers must wear runners and comfortable clothing.

Week 1: 12:15pm - 3:15pm (July 7-11)

Outdoor Team GamesGrades 1 to 3This camp focuses a variety of tag and other team games catered to the level and the interests of the group. Students will hone their hand-eye coordination and agility in a variety of fun team games. As well, they will learn to collaborate with teammates and develop leadership skills as they strategise together to play the game. Campers must wear runners and comfortable clothing.

Week 2: 12:15pm - 3:15pm (July 14-18)

Super Sport SkillsGrades 1 to 3This afternoon program introduces the youngest of athletes to various sport skills, using many traditional, yet modified sports such as basketball, soccer or floor hockey, and a multitude of small group fun challenges. Campers will learn how to find fresh water and food and how to make shelters that don’t leave a trace once we’re gone. Students will also learn what to do if you get lost in the forest. Campers will need to wear clothes that can get dirty and have rain gear, too.

Extreme Ball Games for Active KidsGrades 1 to 3This action-packed programme introduces the youngest of athletes to various ball skills. Catching, throwing, kicking, striking and underarm rolling are all important building blocks of foundation movements for more complex and specialised skills required by children throughout their lives to competently and confidently play different sports.Campers need to come dressed in runners and clothing suitable for active sports.

Predators vs. Prey - Extreme Tag GamesGrades 4 to 6This camp focuses on a variety of tag and other team games catered to the level and the interests of the group each week. Students will hone their hand-eye coordination and agility in a variety of fun team games. Campers must wear runners and comfortable clothing.

Ball Games for the Brave!Grades 4 to 6This action-packed programme introduces young athletes to various ball skills, using many traditional, modified sports such as basketball, soccer, floor hockey, and a multitude of small group fun challenges. Sports could include: basketball, volleyball, badminton, introductory touch rugby, ultimate Frisbee, California kickball, soccer, capture the flag and dodge ball. Participants must wear running shoes and bring extra water or juice.
