The 3 R's on the Move (Reading/Writing/Math & Movement) - Grade 1 This course has been designed to meet the specific needs of students entering or just finishing Grade 1. These courses will focus on developing foundation skills in Mathematics and Literacy, with some physical activity too! Proper running shoes will be needed.  

 

Be Fit with Lit -Grades 2-3 Maintain and improve your child's reading and writing level through the summer months and stay active at the same time. This program is designed to improve their abilities and create a love of books and words. There will be a daily physical activity component so proper running shoes will be needed.

Math on the Move Grades 2-3 Strengthen your child’s basic Math and problem-solving skills, helping prepare them for the next grade. Engaging classes to make math fun! There will also be a daily physical activity component so proper running shoes will be needed.

Digital Literacy Grades 4-5This course has been designed for students as they begin to utilize informational technologies at home and in the school system in a safe and responsible manner. Students will learn to use technology to: access, analyze, evaluate and communicate information.

Coding for Kids (Imagine, Program, Share, Repeat) Grades 4 and 5This course will develop and apply your child's coding and computational thinking skills while staying active at the same time. This course will teach your child the Scratch programming language and how to apply it in a variety of situations (animation, game design and real-world application). Collaboration with peers is built into the course as a fundamental part of the coding process. Your child will also be active in physical activities as a part of each school day.

Reading RangersGrades 2-3Reading Rangers will provide students with the early reading skills the opportunity to learn and incorporate strategies. Daily Physical Activity (DPA) will be part of this course too. Students in this program must be recommended by their School-Based Team and 2 cohorts will be offered:

Cohort 1: PM Benchmark levels of 16 and lower

Cohort 2: PM Benchmark levels 16 or higher

Elementary School Program

The intent of the Elementary Preview courses is to introduce

students to the skills needed to be successful in school, and to develop

or maintain an appreciation for learning within 40 hours of

instructional time during the month of July

• Writing Warriors will provide low tech and hightech supports to those students with writtenoutput difficulties using program such as PrintLike a Pro and Clicker for iPad. SUMMER LEARNING PROGRAM

Middle School Summit Courses: Grade 6-7 Micro Summit (40 hours)July 2– 15, 2019 8:00 am – 12:00pm Grade 8 Summit (80 hours) July 2-29, 2019 8:00am-12:00pm

The Summer Learning Middle School Summit Courses are delivered in a cross-curricular project based learning format that provides students with an opportunity to develop skills and meet learning outcomes within a 2-week (40 hours) or 4-week (80 hours) period.

Students will work with teachers and student mentors on cross-curricular projects or inquiries designed to cover the essential learning objectives in the core academic subjects (Math, Science, English and Social Studies). Project based inquiry will occur for part of the day, and, for the other part of the day; students will be engaged in Daily Physical Activities such as: minor games, field trips, hiking,etc. Along the way, while meeting the learning outcomes, we are aiming to improve student engagement, as well as creating an appreciation of a healthy balanced lifestyle.

Course Completion Students are required to attend Summer Learning in order to obtain credit for courses they were unsuccessful in completing throughout the year.

Grade 9 Course Completion: July 2-29 8:00am-10:00, 10:15am-12:15pm

All Grade 9 courses consist of 40 hours of instruction. All Course Completion Students will register for a course or courses needed and upon completion of the course(s), the home school will determine if sufficient outcomes have been met. A minimum of 35% is required to enroll in a class. Classes offered include: English 9, Science 9, Math 9, and Social Studies 9.

Specialty Middle School Courses:

Each specialty course offered consists of 40 hours of instruction. Credits will not be granted for a specialty course.

Sustainable Vegetable Production July 2 – August 30, 2019 Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:00 am – 2:00 pm

This unique outdoor course will take place at both the Sardis Secondary School Greenhouse and the Sardis Secondary School Farm (on Richardson Avenue).

Students will be taught about food production through practical hands-on experiences. Students will learn skills in land preparation, planting, weed control, pest management, fertilizing, pruning, harvesting, marketing and sales. They will also work alongside community partners who are specialists in the various commodities grown. As a side benefit, students will be consumers of the various foods grown and will be encouraged to prepare the food and eat it with their families.

Attendance: Attendance during the Summer Learning session is a prerequisite to success. Full attendance is required. Absences in excess of 2 days may result in withdrawal from the course.

Program Overview

This course will offer learners in

Grades 2-3 & 4-5 a chance to learn outside of the classroom (rain or

shine), explore their natural

surroundings and develop a deeper

appreciation for the great outdoors

while integrating numeracy and

literacy. This program will

predominantly take place outdoors.

Twice a week learners will come to

the classroom to reflect on their

outdoor pursuits. The final day of the

adventure students will share their

learnings with classmates and

parents. Parents are responsible for

transporting their child to and from

the locations.

A signed permission slip is a requirement as

a condition of registration in this program.
