Materials Requirements for Class: You will need a lab notebook, which will remain in the lab at all times. Order this soon – you will need it for the summer assignment. Please bring this notebook the first day of school. You have several choices of notebook. You can get a formal lab notebook such as the carbonless ones found on Amazon’s Hayden—McNeil store. You will need about 50 pages. It doesn’t matter whether the cover says chemistry or life or environmental sciences. These notebooks have a tear-out copy page that you will be allowed to take home to complete your lab and hand in with your report. The other alternative is to get a composition notebook, take photos of your pages and print out (full size) those pages to hand in with your labs. Guidelines for Summer Assignment: Credit will be deducted at a rate of 10% per day for lateness. Do not plagiarize any part of these assignments, as doing so will earn you a "0" - not a good way to begin the year! If two or more students have the exact same sentences and/or paragraphs word for word, that is considered plagiarism! Emailed assignments will NOT be accepted. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments or concerns. I look forward to meeting you in the fall! [email protected]

AP Environmental Science Summer Assignment 2019 2

Part A: Exploring Nature The environment is all around us, but we spend so much time inside that we fail to appreciate what is at our doorstep. The goal of this assignment is to help you learn to observe and appreciate the natural world around you. This assignment is to be completed in short sections – do not leave it until the day before school starts! Try to visit the same location each time. Record these thoughts in your lab notebook. You will hand in the yellow (carbon) copy. Please note date, time, location, and weather on each portion.

a) Sit at your spot for 10 minutes. Write freely whatever you observe. Don’t obsess about this – just write. Think about each of your senses and what they are noting. What is getting your attention? What are you feeling? Write for the entire 10 minutes. Don’t edit this or stop writing; just get your thoughts on paper.

b) At least 2 weeks later, return to your spot. Re-read your thoughts from part a. What has changed? What has remained the same? Spend 10 more minutes here, writing the entire time.

c) At least 1 week later, return to your spot. Imagine that you are a creature here. Who are you? What is your life/day/year like? What do you interact with? How do you regard humans? Write for at least 10 minutes.

d) Now try some nature sketching. Find 3 different leaf shapes and sketch them, as close to life size as possible. Use simple lines and label size and color. Identify if possible. Then draw a 3 by 5 inch box to create a map of the landscape in front of you. Inside the box, draw a line where sky and land meet. Add simple shapes to denote trees, buildings, etc.

e) Write a 1 paragraph summary reflection. What have you discovered during this exercise?

f) Hand in your yellow (carbon) sheets and your summary reflection.
