November 7, 2016 Summer Arts Institutes for Westwood Visual Arts Teachers Over the summer, Carly Saxon and Katrina Hampton attended Summer Arts Institutes paid for by the Distinguished Arts Program (DAP) grant that Westwood receives. Carly Saxon attended the Arts and Technology course at the South Carolina Governor’s School. She learned how to use photoshop and how to use a walcom tablet. She will be using what she learned to do a self-portrait assignment with her students using both tools along with assessment she developed for this assignment. Ms. Saxon also attended the Muse Machine in Spartanburg held at the Art Museum and Dorman High School gaining experience and knowledge on how STEAM is used in all art areas. She wants to include STEAM in as many lessons as she can, using more STEAM materials in her 3-D projects. Westwood has been a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) school for four years. Katrina Hampton spent a week of her summer break attending the Arts Assessment Institute held at the Governor's School for Arts and Humanities(Greenville) learning about authentic assessment items for visual art area. She plans to apply her new learning to creating better rubrics and testing items for her art lessons. Ms. Hampton developed a multiple choice test, performance task with a checklist, and a performance task with a rubric. Congratulations to Art Students! Westwood Theatre Department Represents South Carolina at the International Thespian Festival in Nebraska

Five Westwood Theatre students and two chaperones represented South Carolina at the International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska, this past June 20-27, 2016. Seniors William Ellis and Marilyn Guy performed their powerful drama, Down Came the Rain, with Senior Katelyn Robinson doing lighting and rising Juniors Ashley Epperson and Brienna Pease serving as the stage manager and crew for the show. Dr. Anne Richardson, the Westwood Theatre teacher, felt the experience was wonderful for the students to see the caliber of performances that they watched as well as the Westwood students performing for an international audience. Students also took master classes throughout the day and attended full productions at night. Dr. Richardson took a course on directing musicals and said the teacher was excellent. Robin Blume, a theatre supporter and parent volunteer chaperoned and enjoyed seeing the quality performances executed by high school students. Ashley Epperson commented that….. and Brienna Pease enjoyed making friends with other young people who enjoy theatre as I do!

Congratulations to the newly elected Officers of the Westwood Chapter of the International Thespian Society:

Visual Art, Theatre, and Studio D Students meet with Bob Doster, Visual Artist

With the help of the Distinguished Arts Program (DAP) Grant and funding as an Arts In Basic Curriculum (ABC) Site, Westwood Visual Arts, Theatre, and Studio D students will be designing and creating a metal sculpture of a RedHawk for the

courtyard at Westwood High School. Bob Doster, Master Metal Sculpture will serve as the guest artist who will guide the project. The Arts Integrated project began with the initial meeting with Mr. Doster to discuss the project and safety issues. The students will travel to Brookgreen Gardens near Myrtle Beach to see the statues and outside artwork which will serve as inspiration for the project at Westwood in November.

Students will then work with Mr. Doster to design and create the metal sculpture. In December, the students and teachers will travel to his studio in Lancaster to view the

final phase of the sculpture before the RedHawk arrives at Westwood. A special installation performance is planned as part of the spring Fine Arts Showcase.

Westwood teachers who are collaborating on the project are Studio D teachers, Barbara Soblo, Emily Farr, and Krista Greene, Visual Arts teachers Carly Saxon and Bill Hicks,

and Theatre teacher, Dr. Anne Richardson.
