Pleasant Hill School District As the 2015-16 school year comes to a close, we should all look back at the past year and be proud of the accomplishments our students and staff achieved in spite of the disruptions and distractions from the construction work on campus. Our middle and high school students and teachers suffered the move to temporary classrooms in good spirits, while the elementary staff and students did their best to ignore the noise on the other side of the plywood walls. Our athletes and coaches learned to live without locker rooms, our food service mastered their new equipment and kitchens, and the high school admin team was able to maintain smooth operations despite the chaos from the remodeling of their offices. Our architects, contractors, and construction managers have worked hard to overcome the County permit delays and the added scope of work required by the state fire marshal, and have established completion dates that will allow us to move out of the portable classrooms and into the new middle and high school wings by the end of July. The auxiliary gym will be complete, and the security enhancements at the elementary school entrance will be completed over the summer. New furniture, classroom equipment, and lockers will be installed over the summer. The new bus route through campus, which will enhance safety by separating bus traffic from the parent drop-off Summer 2016 Facility Update: Completion Nears for Many Improvements traffic, is under design and will be completed over the summer as well. Unfortunately, the schedule delays and added fire suppression work will require some of the work to be deferred to the summer of 2017. This deferred work will likely include the replacement of the existing gym floor, the finishing of the two added classrooms at the high school, and the connection of the elementary school and library. The new fire suppression system has cost nearly $600,000, and was not anticipated in our original bond amount. The cost of the permitting delays, also unanticipated, are in negotiations and are not yet known. Once the current work is completed and paid for, the Board will meet to determine how best to complete the deferred work with the remaining bond funds. The bond promises will be met, but how and when are yet to be determined. Regardless of these budget and schedule issues, which anyone who has remodeled a kitchen or bathroom can understand, we are soon to have beautiful new and vastly improved elementary, middle, and high school classroom spaces for many years to come. Pleasant Hill High School

A Letter from the PrincipalDear Pleasant Hill High School Students and Parents,

I would like to thank all the students, staff, parents, and volunteers that have made this unusual year with construction a success. I would also like to thank our senior students for having such great attitudes about spending your senior year in a makeshift campus. You have been wonderful.

Now for a little recap: Back in August, the high school office was not completed and we made due with the back room of the Pleasant Hill Community Center. The office staff then moved in over the weekend before school started. Teaching and support staff finished last school year by packing up their rooms. In August, they unpacked and prepared for students to arrive in September.

School started on September 8 with students occupying temporary classrooms and a campus that was surrounded by construction projects. Everyone settled in, and modular classrooms and construction became the norm. Teachers were teaching and students were learning despite all the disruption and chaos.

Spring finally arrived and the new buildings were taking shape. We could finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. It has truly been an adventure.

Now that we are nearly out of school, we look forward to packing again and getting ready to move into our new buildings to start school year 2016-2017.

Great job by all and GO Billies,Randy FisherPrincipal

Mentoring Program Impacts Students

Nationally, mentoring has benefited thousands of young people and helped them become contributing members of their communities. Quality mentoring programs are proven to help improve school attendance and academic achievement, promote responsible decision making, and provide skills to better navigate relationships at school, socially and at home. Ultimately, the mentoring effect makes our community stronger. As community members, we should honor that. Please join the Pleasant Hill School District and the Reaching Out Mentoring Program as we say

THANK YOU to our 22 wonderful adult volunteer mentors who meet weekly with their student mentees:

Pleasant Hill Elementary School

A Letter from the PrincipalDear Pleasant Hill Elementary Parents/Guardians and Students,

This year has flown by. Students have busily been working to master the grade level standards. We have so many things to be proud of in the areas of learning, community service, enrichment opportunities, and family and community support.

Our kitchen and upgraded restrooms in the cafeteria were ready and waiting for that very first day of school, thanks to community members approving the district bond campaign to complete this project. Shortly thereafter, we held Open House for all of our friends and families to see the great things taking place around campus.

In October, our families and community members generously donated their time and monies to our annual fall Jog-a-thon fundraiser, raising close to $20,000 for field trips and enrichment activities for students this year. Our newly remodeled library opened and Oregon Battle of the Books teams were formed for students in third grade, led by both community volunteers and staff.

Nearly 100% of our families participated in parent conferences during the month of November. Students also worked with the concept of “We might not all GO AT it the same way, but we can all work together,” sharing how they work with others and what they are thankful for.

In December, we focused on community giving. Students gathered over 2,000 pounds of food during the annual food drive. Third grade collected donations to purchase toys, donated to the Toys for Tots program. Fourth grade participated in a local community service project, too. The community donated White Elephant items for students to purchase for others with their Billie Bucks. In addition, PTO sponsored a Holiday Gram card for students to purchase and give to other students.

We held our first Read Across America Week featuring a different Dr. Seuss Book each day of the week in February. Our students read 1,000,000 minutes as a school by Spring Break. As of today, they have read collectively 1,339,896 hours.

Through a community grant, we hosted our first Artist in Residence, Kelly Thibodeaux. Kelly taught every Kindergarten through fourth grader how to fiddle. By the end of three quick lessons, the students put on a recital for their families. He generously donated three fiddles to the school to keep fiddling alive.

After many years of service and dedication, Terri Carpenter, 2nd grade, retired mid-year. Debbie Laney, 1st grade, is retiring at the end of the year. We wish each of them the very best. Wednesday, June 15, we will also say good bye to our current fifth and sixth grade classes and their families, as our district grade level configuration at the high school level will be grades 6–12. Best wishes to next year’s 6th and 7th grade classes, who will be in the new middle school wing at the high school!

Activities and special events are being planned for the 2016-2017 school year. In addition to four new classrooms, we will also have a new bus loop. Details will be shared in mid-August by mail and email. Have a wonderful and safe summer!

Respectfully, Devery StonebergPrincipal

PTO UPdatesThank You So Much!We want to express a heartfelt thank you for all the support we have received this year. We were able to do so many activities and fundraisers because of the help from our community, teachers and room parents. The money earned provided many enriching field trips and activities for PHES students. Thank you for making 2015-2016 a huge success!

The new 2016-2017 PTO board was voted in on May 10, 2016. Board members include: President Deserae Anderson, Vice President Marissa Smith, Secretary Kathie Fischer, Treasurer Michelle Allen, Volunteer Coordinator Megan Flanders, Communication Coordinator Cary Stuart, and Fundraising Coordinators Stefanie Aldrige and Cassandre Wilson. We would also like to express our appreciation for the 2015-2016 PTO board for their hours of dedicated work.

We’re gearing up for a fantastic year and are looking for positive and motivated people to join us. Please become a member of the PTO. Membership forms will be available at the beginning of the school year. Our biggest fundraiser of the year, the Jog-A-Thon, is set for September 30. Please save the date!

Thank you again for supporting the PTO. We’re so happy to be part of such a generous and kind community.

Many Thanks to You!Families and community members raised approximately $1,200 for PHES by clipping box tops. Please save these over the summer, as we will be hosting a Box Top contest in the fall.

Without the support of our parent volunteers, both in and out of the classroom, our students would have missed out on many experiences. So, thank you for the 300-500 volunteer hours a month you logged this year!

Oregon Rising

Be Heard, Spread the WordWhat kind of education do you want for Oregon’s kids? What does a dream education look like to you? Take the Oregon Rising survey at www.oregon-rising.org

Oregon Rising is a state-wide conversation about public education; a chance for your voice to be heard at the state level. It is a non-partisan effort and it is not related to a bond or ballot measure. The goal is to hear from 10,000 Oregonians.

Please visit the site, take the survey and feel free to invite your friends, acquaintances and family to take the survey as well.

We are moving from imagining what our new facilities will look like to seeing them actually take shape all around us. It is exciting to get more than a glimpse of our new educational spaces. Work is progressing rapidly.

Here are the anticipated substantial completions dates:

High School/Middle School Additions• South Wing (grades 9-12)—June 24• North Wing (grades 6-8)—July 7• West Wing (Science)—July 15• Auxiliary Gym—July 12

Elementary School • Additional Classrooms—July 1

We anticipate having full access to all areas by the beginning of August, which should give us time to get everything ready for the start of school on September 6.

Thanks for your awesome support to make this possible!

Free Summer Meals AvailableTens of thousands of Oregon children receive meals for free or at a reduced cost during the school year, but when summer break happens, that resource disappears. The Summer Food Service Program helps fill this gap. This summer, meals at no charge are available to all children and teens between 1 and 18 years old.

To find the nearest summer meal site, text “FOOD” to 877877, or call 1 (866) 348-6479 (1-866-3-HUNGRY), or visit www.summerfoodoregon.org.

Summer meal sites are community programs and do not require an application or proof of income. Adults are welcome to accompany children to these sites, but meals are available only for kids. Note that many of the locations in Oregon also offer enrichment programs and activities that children may participate in, although some are structured programs that are only available to enrolled children.
