We are well into the ride season now, and we have had a goodyear so far - no one injured, and horses are all doing well with thehot weather and dry conditions. There is only one ride in our regionleft, but you may consider checking out rides in other regions asthey can be a lot of fun, and a little change is always good.

Something to think about when you’re watering your horse incamp and out on trail, and that is to try to use your own bucket orwater bag rather than letting your horse drink from a commontrough. I know the big water tub looks good, and the horse may bevery thirsty, but diseases can spread by using a common trough, and no one wants a sick horse.

Coming into the P&R is always a concern for me as that is mything. When you get your P&R card, try to get in line (pull the sad-dle if you choose to), loosen that cinch, and let the horse get somewell needed rest. If your horse is not standing still and resting, itmay be something to work on at home. It does become a problemfor the P&R crew if they have a hard time with a horse movingaround making the job a challenge to get the numbers on thathorse and the horses around them. Always safety first.

At a P&R stop, I always say “get it and get out,” but rememberthe horse next to you might be in the middle of being checked, solook around before you decide to move out.

Take care, and as always, if you have a concern please con-tact myself or any of the board members. We are always here foryou.

Region 1 Chair,

Steve Meroshnekoff

When “my kids” and I talkabout this year’s Mt Diablo ride, wejust say it was perfect -   the trailmarking, the timing, the food, theawards, the raffle (well, I’m alwayscrabby about raffles, so “perfect”means I only grouched once). Eventhe weather was perfect!

The hills were green and gold-en under a sunny blue sky, andbrightly colored wildflowers werebeautiful. At the lunch break at Dia-blo Ranch there was hay and waterfor everyone. Although my kidswere not into eating the hay, thehorses were glad to eat anyoneelse’s share. Oh yeah, did I men-

tion that the food was perfect? Thespaghetti dinner is so special onFridays, every year, and then thebarbeque on Saturdays – mmmm!

“Perfect” doesn’t come withouta lot of taking in of feedback overall these years that this ride hasbeen put on. Personally, Mt Diablois my favorite ride because I’ve giv-en feedback to the wonderful ridemanagement many times, and it’sbeen taken very well. Changeswere carefully thought out and triedout, and boy, they’ve been working!

Our favorite part of the ride isactually going through the MercuryPond – the leaps! Or maybe thecareful sniff, followed by slow, highsteps. In any case, it’s one of thosehealthy risk situations that kidsneed to experience, right? I re-member one year I had to some-how ride around it – my horse

totally refused. And that was OKtoo! What flexibility and resource-fulness is available among thosewho put on rides!

We enjoyed the long trottingopportunities, with bouncing tailsand posting girls and exclamationsof joy and wonder! The variety ofterrain is remarkable, with every-thing from switchbacks to meadowsto chaparral vistas. The obstacleswere appropriate to the various di-visions, and especially our horse-manship judge was supportive andable to teach as we faced challeng-es.

It seems like a long time untilnext May, like we’ll be longing forthe Mt. Diablo ride to happen waybefore it can. I suppose that’ll giveus time to get our horses in shapefor this not-so-easy ride.

Large Animal Rescue- East BayMany of you might have heard of thedevastating horse-related accidentsthat have occurred in the East Bayover the last few months. Horses havefallen down treacherous trails whileothers have been involved in fatalvehicle collisions. In both situations, large animal rescue equipment wasneeded, but not available.

As a result, the East Bay Regional ParksDistrict has initiated a fundraising effortwith the goal of purchasing the

equipment necessary for large animalrescue. They intend to use part of thedonations to provide annual trainingfor their first responders that would beresponsible for use of the rescueequipment as well.

Portola Valley TrailsFor those of you who ride in the bayarea, the trails of the El Mirador Farmare still open despite the ongoing workon the property. However, theWoodside Trail Club would like toremind us to be aware of the repairs, downed tree clean up, and other userswhile enjoying the trails at this time. They have asked that riders continue tobe courteous of the property ownersand to stay on the marked trails alongthe way.

Twenty-seven hardy ridersenjoyed the Round Valley RegionalPark’s peaks and valleys on June6-7, 2015. The weather gods werekind and the temperatures didn’t gettoo high. The park service mowedunder the trees and we were againallowed to camp in some shady are-as, which was much appreciated byboth horses and riders. Round Val-ley trails cover terrain within theMorgan Territory watershed landand a few sections in private proper-ty. Once on top, there are great

views of theSan Fran-cisco Bay,LivermoreValley, andon a clearday you cansee the Si-erras loom-ing in thedistance. Achallengingbut reward-ing ride.

Weeksof prepara-tion go intoputting on

rides. Gene and Vicki Boicellli andChris Heath and a host of other vol-unteers were out there checkingtrails, working on the camp site andputting up ribbons. While it was fun,it’s many hours of preparing for thatONE weekend. Many thanks to allthe volunteers - those of you whotimed the trails, drove the judges, secretaried for the judges, timers,Rules Interpreter, P&R crews and ahost of others who truly don’t get

enough pats on the back! You arethe reason these rides happen, andyou all are the “windbeneath” the ridemanager’s wings.Thank You, ThankYou!!

Round Valleyride enjoyed a visitfrom four Region 2riders from Arizonawho had banded to-gether to compete inmultiple rides in CA.Many thanks for in-cluding us in yourjourney. The Arizonacontingent broughtone mule, our ownMarilyn the Mule fromRegion 1 competed, and our twosafety riders rode mules. It wasgreat fun (but loud at times) to havefour mules in camp. I had intendedto get all four together for a picturebut sadly missed the opportunity!

This year atRound Valley, GeneBoicelli had some sur-prises in store for us.As we enjoyed thetraditional Mexicandinner on Saturdayevening, we were en-tertained by RachelSmith who had won anational fiddle champi-onship in 2013.Rachel is a student ofthe Berkeley School ofMusic and is complet-ing her degree thisyear. She also competes in dres-sage and 3-day eventing on herNorwegian Fjord horse, “Cinco deMayo”. It was delightful to enjoy ourdinner and listen to Celtic music ona warm summer evening. It added agreat ambiance to the evening thatwe seldom get to enjoy “roughing itat the rides.”

After dinner, Gene surprised usagain! He raffled off one week at histime share in Hawaii as a fund raiserfor the Round Valley ride. Neil andKitty Weber (our wonderful, longtime timers) had the winning ticket.

They will enjoy April 1-8 2016 at ThePoint Resort, Poipu beach, on the

lovely garden island ofKauai. What a delightfulsurprise from Gene andVicki, and it couldn’thave been won by amore deserving couple.Neil stated that he’s al-ways promised to takeKitty to Hawaii and nev-er made it. Now theyare excitedly planningtheir Hawaii trip. ALO-HA to Neil and Kitty!!

This year’s RoundValley ride was unusualin that we had entertain-ment and a Hawaii raf-fle. However this ride is

always great, mostly due to Geneand Vicki and their wonderful neigh-bor, Chris Heath (famous rattlereliminator). Chris is the guy in campwith a great smile who is always onthe move, working hard to help

make the ride a suc-cess. Chris and Geneunloaded tons (literal-ly) of rock to fill inholes, patrolled thearea to eliminate anyunwanted snakes, trucked in water- wellyou get the picture. Tothose of you who havenever ridden at RoundValley- join us nextyear. Yes, it’s a chal-lenging ride. Yes,some years it can gettoasty. BUT it’s a fun

ride and we have a GREAT time!Join us in 2016 and “soar with theeagles” at Round Valley.

Vacancies

Thank You, LeroyBy Kay Lieberknecht

Dr. Leroy Burnham, DVM

I wanted to share with you howLeroy handled some needs myhorse, Feathers, had at the RoundValley ride. I knew she wasn't insuper good shape and that shepants a lot when it's hot. After oneP&R that was supposed to just be atrot-by, Steve (P&R captain extraor-dinaire) had alerted me that hewanted Leroy to pay attention toFeathers' elevated respirations, and Leroy did everything to checkthat all was fine.

At the end of the first day, herpulse was 56 at the half-hour checkback, and Leroy had me bring herback after he was done with every-one else. The pulse was still elevat-ed, and he confirmed my suspicionthat she was off in the rear. Mas-saging the muscles down the rear(below the tail) that function to ex-tend the leg made her upset, so Iwent back to Leroy who had meback her up. She appeared uncer-tain in placing that foot – a brilliantway to confirm her problem. I did alot of massage that night, iced thearea, and by morning she showedno pain and her pulse was fine.During the day, I felt her hesitatefor a couple of steps going uphill, something Leroy had warned mewould be the hardest thing. At thehalf-hour check out at the end ofthe day, she was grade two lame, which I felt really sorry about.

She's gotten plenty of restsince then, me having less thanadequate opportunity to ride her.She is totally sound, spunky, andwe'll see how she does at JacksonForest!

With this rather crabby horse,Leroy was so attentive, caring andrespectfully knowledgeable, I justreally appreciated him a lot. One ofmy girls told me after the RoundValley ride that she enjoyed Leroy'shumorous comments to her, thathe'd been very supportive to hertoo. It's great to share about thispositive experience and good out-come!

Thank you, Leroy!

From the Editor…I hope this issue of the newsletter

finds everyone enjoying summer andgetting in lots of saddle time! I’vegotten some myself the last fewmonths.

I volunteered to take on the edit-ing of this newsletter several yearsago, and I’ve enjoyed putting it togeth-er. As I review back issues, it’s fun tolook at the photos from past rides andread about everyone’s adventures onthe trails. But I’ve also noticed that, asthe time has gone by, more and moreof the content of the newsletter hasbeen left up to me.

To come up with newsletter con-tent, I’ve scoured the Web to find arti-cles about trail riding, horse care, etc.that I felt would be of interest to thefolks of Region 1. I’ve includedarticles and photos from ourAlaska rides, and when I’ve beenable to get them, I’ve includedphotos and stories from the ridesin Region 1.

And therein lies the prob-lem. For the past several issues,I haven’t received much in theway of material to include in thenewsletter. Coming up with arti-cles on my own is time consum-

ing and takes away from myenjoyment of being the Editor.

Additionally, I sort of have toguess at what you, as members of Re-gion 1, would like to have included inyour newsletter. This is not MY news-letter, it is YOUR newsletter, and Ineed YOUR input, suggestions andfeedback to keep it YOUR newsletterand not MY newsletter.

When I volunteered to be the Edi-tor, I budgeted a certain amount of mytime to compile, design and publishthis newsletter. But as more and moreof the content has been left up to me,it has gotten way over budget on thetime thing. So, if I am to continue asthe Editor, I need to bring this newslet-ter back into its time budget, and that’swhere you, as the members of Region

1, come in. If you send me things toinclude in the newsletter, it takes me awhole lot less time to put it together foryour reading enjoyment. I would likeyou to send me photos, stories, andeven if you just have a suggestion of asubject related to competitive trail rid-ing that you’d like to know more about, send me that too. If I have a subject, finding information on that subject is awhole lot less time consuming.

This issue does have some ridestories and some photos from aroundthe region. And I certainly appreciatereceiving them. But they were re-ceived well after the submission dead-line, which partially accounts for whythis issue is late in getting to everyone.

Even if you don’t send me sub-missions for the newsletter, I still need

to balance the time budget if I’mto continue as the Editor and youknow what that means? Thatmeans that your newsletter willinclude only board meeting min-utes and other regional businessinformation, like a ride schedule. How boring is that? I don’t thinkthat’s what you want in YOURnewsletter. I’m counting on you tocome through for me!

See you on the trail!Laurie Knuutila

Catching Fire…

As the drought and bark beetlescontinue to cause high fire hazards inour region, wildfires ravage many of thetrails we know and love. CowboyCamp, where we hold a benefit rideeach May, is among one of the areasthat has burned recently and is nowclosed. Before heading out to ride, besure to check the Cal Fire websiteand/or with your local park to ensurethat the area is safe to ride in. Whileriding, be alert! And for other fire safetytips for equine owners, considerchecking out online resources.

Last Ride of the Season!

Don’t forget to send in your entry forthe Jackson Forest Fall Ride! This will be our last ride of 2015! Angie,Maria, and crew have been hard atwork preparing new trails and timingthe ride among many other tasks.Come on out to enjoy the fantasticscenery the Jackson DemonstrationForest has to offer amid the wonderfulcompany of your fellow NATRC ridersand volunteers.

THANK YOU to everyone who makesthese fabulous rides possible!

Lucky for us, many areas in our regionhave recently announced theirsuccesses in securing trails forequestrians and other recreationistsnow and in the future. For instance, the Berryessa-Snow Mountain regionwas declared a National Monument, promising public access to this area forgenerations to come. The AmericanRiver Conservancy just announcedtheir acquisition of the 10,000 acreGranite Chief Wilderness which willguarantee us access to beautiful trails

along the American River.

Meanwhile, Concord Hills is a newregional park being developed. Theyare hosting public meetings to get anidea of how the land should be used.It is opportunities like this where aNATRC presence would be crucial toensure that equestrians have a say andkeep their privilege of accessingdifferent trails. If you have the time toattend one of their meetings, pleasedo! Riders will thank you for years tocome!
