A specialist fresh fruit and vegetable unloading company has a unique fl eet of two-tonne payload Toyota forklifts to handle the added weight in bins of ‘hard produce’.

Guy’s Freight Service has operated at the Melbourne Wholesale Fruit, Vegetable & Flower Market for 45 years, initially at Queen Street and now West Melbourne.

Uniquely at Melbourne markets it uses Toyota 328-FG20 forklifts rather than the ubiquitous 1.8-tonne payload 32-8FG18 forklift models.

Director Joy Guy said the additional payload of the Toyota 32-8FG20 forklifts suited the company’s needs when unloading bins of hard produce such as potatoes, onions and watermelons.

“A produce bin typically holds 500kg of fruit or vegetables, but with hard produce it can weigh up to a tonne and the forklift

has to lift two at a time,” she said.

“The added lifting capacity really counts; one of the other unloading companies here borrows one of my 32-8FG20 forklifts when they need to unload hard produce.

“We have been using Toyota forklifts since 2008 and recently commissioned an additional Toyota forklift through Toyota Material Handling salesperson Scott Bocksette, giving us 10 in total.

“Our operators fi nd the Toyota forklifts more stable for the work here in the markets and hence feel more comfortable on them,” she said.

“They’re fi tted with attachments to weigh the produce as it is unloaded.”

Joy’s husband and fellow director Alan Guy founded the company.

“We unload the trucks that come in from growing areas and

sort the produce for the various selling agents,” she said.

“We have three tray-top trucks that operate only within the

markets, delivering up to 10 bins at a time to the agents.

“One of our forklifts and operators go around to the various

agents with each truck and unloads it for them.”

Toyota offers a comprehensive range of internal combustion

and battery electric forklifts.

The Toyota 8-Series 1 tonne to 3.5 tonnes compact internal

combustion forklifts have leading design and safety features,

such as Automatic Fork Levelling Control to level forks during

loading, the Toyota System of Active Stability (which locks

the rear axle to help reduce the potential for lateral tip-overs),

digital weight scales, electronic fuel injection and a closed loop

LPG System with a catalytic purifi er.

Ever seen a Toyota Huski 5SDK8 skid steer loader, complete with custom-made chrome wheels, cruising down George Street in Sydney’s CBD?

It’s most likely to be Mario Vella from Bossley Bobcats who has just taken delivery of a new 5SDK8.

“The only thing that’s missing is the fl uffy dice,” Mario joked.

Along with his impressive custom-made chrome wheels from Bearcat Tyres, the Toyota Huski also features two-pack paint and a Norm 4-in-1 bucket.

“The chrome won’t necessarily improve performance but it means I can now go for a cruise and look the part,” Mario said, laughing.

“The machine looks really pimped-out but a lot of the features, such as the air-conditioned cab and iPod dock, are standard equipment.”

Mario said he thinks adding the top-quality accessories to his Toyota Huski shows his dedication to his work.

“I feel that the two-pack paint, chrome wheels and the Norm bucket show everyone that I care about my equipment,” he explained.

“Anybody looking to use my services can assume that if I care about my equipment this much, then I clearly also take pride in the work that I do.”

Mario’s introduction to earthmoving is a familiar story that a lot of contractors can relate to.

In the early nineties he started working for another contractor as an operator and soon caught the bug for the industry.

Seven years later, in 1999, Mario bought his very fi rst skid steer.

It was an early 3 series Toyota SDK8 skid steer, back when they were orange coloured.

Mario bought the machine second-hand and just eight months later he was able to replace it with his fi rst of many brand new Toyota Huski SDK8s.

Mario soon learnt the value of a brand new machine extends far beyond shiny paint.

“The reliability of a new machine is great as is the overall presentation of your business,” Mario said.

“But what’s also fantastic is the service you receive when you buy a brand new Toyota.”

Mario said the staff at Toyota were almost like his business partners.

“The sales and service guys have actually become close friends of mine over the years and we all work together to make sure that my business is productive and remains profi table,” Mario said.

Subsequently, Mario’s latest 5 SDK8 Toyota Huski is his fourth brand new skid steer following that initial purchase of his old orange series 3.

This is his second Series 5 – he purchased his previous one just over three years ago.

“That machine was fantastic and is still going strong but it had just over 3050 hours on it,” Mario said.

“It was just time to update again.”

Mario said the Huski was his choice of machine because of its extreme durability.

“These Toyota Huskies are just bullet-proof and have so much power,” he said.

Toyota’s hydrogen car in final stagesof development

Toyota has offi cially unveiled a concept version of its ground-breaking hydrogen-powered car, which is due to go into production in around 10 months.

The FCV (Fuel Cell Vehicle) Concept, displayed at the Tokyo Motor Show, confi rms that Toyota’s fi rst mass-produced fuel-cell sedan is in the fi nal stages of development.

The world’s leading carmaker says the four-seat sedan’s driving range will be at least 500km and its refuelling time as little as three minutes - both equivalent to a conventional petrol-powered car.

Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the FCV Concept showed Toyota was a pioneering company that achieved great results when it set its mind to a challenge.

“When Toyota introduced the Prius in 1997, no-one knew what a hybrid was - or that Toyota had been developing the technology for more than 30 years,” Mr Cramb said.

“Yet global sales of Toyota and Lexus hybrid vehicles have now topped 5.5 million vehicles and we’re building a hybrid version of Camry here in Australia.

“As the leader in hybrid technology, it is a natural step for Toyota to consider alternate fuels such as hydrogen because of its enormous potential in supporting energy diversifi cation and zero emissions while offering the same convenience as today’s petrol-powered cars.”

Unveiling the FCV Concept, Toyota said it had made great progress in performance improvement and cost reduction, aimed at mainstream use.

It said the mass-produced car is expected to cost under ¥10 million ($108,000) when it is introduced in Japan’s four main urban centres of Tokyo, Chukyo, Kansai and Fukuoka and in certain parts of the United States and Europe.

The concept car’s exterior design was intended to convey the key characteristics of a fuel-cell vehicle: converting air into water as the system produces electricity, and the powerful acceleration enabled by the electric drive motor.

The bold front view features pronounced air intakes while the sleek side view has a “fl owing liquid” door profi le and wave-motif fuel cap. The rear was inspired by the stern of a catamaran.

A family-owned Australian company is benefi ting from its return to a fl eet of Toyota forklifts.

Melbourne-based Natures Organics took delivery of 12 new 1.8-tonne and 2.5-tonne payload Toyota 32-8FG18 and 32-8FG25 forklift trucks in August, replacing a fl eet of rental units from another manufacturer that had been in service for fi ve years.

Prior to using the rental fl eet, Natures Organics had used Toyota forklifts.

“We are glad to go back to Toyota forklifts for the reliability and versatility,” Warehouse Manager Steven Nadj said.

“Regular monthly servicing and strong after-sales support means our forklift fl eet will rarely be out of service.

“We also wanted to deal directly with the manufacturer/supplier and not go through an agent.”

Mr Nadj said the forklifts have all been modifi ed to accommodate narrow drive-in racking.

Natures Organics’ Toyota forklift fl eet is used to load and unload pallets of its range of over 40 products,

encompassing laundry, dish washing, household

cleaning, skin and haircare products that are available

in major supermarket chains throughout Australia and

internationally.

Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) offers a

comprehensive range of Toyota internal combustion and

battery electric counter-balance forklifts, as well as BT Lift

Truck and Raymond warehouse equipment.

It can therefore provide a one-stop shop for material

handling needs.

Natures Organics is an industry leader with a skilled

workforce of 130 employees dedicated to creating and

producing sustainable product alternatives.

The use of quality environmentally responsible

formulations, persistence in fi nding natural alternatives to

chemical ingredients, ongoing investment in research and

development and a fi rm belief in sustainable packaging

has seen Natures Organics grow to produce around 40

million units a year.

A state-of-the-art Toyota forklift truck will feature in the premiere of a breathtaking dance-circus performance during January’s Sydney Festival.

The 2.5-tonne payload battery-electric Toyota 7FBE18

machine features in FORKLIFT, by acclaimed Melbourne-

based performance company KAGE.

The 50-minute piece will have its world premiere with fi ve

performances at Carriageworks from 16 to 19 January, before

being presented outdoors at the Arts Centre Melbourne

from 12 to 16 February. FORKLIFT then heads out on an

international tour that includes Finland and the United

Kingdom.

Devised in Australia and developed at Helsinki’s Center for

New Circus (CIRKO), the piece features contortion, aerial

acrobatics, striking lighting effects and original music.

It combines the talents of Finnish hand balancer Henna

Kaikula with dancers Amy Macpherson and Nicci Wilks.

KAGE co-founder and FORKLIFT director Kate Denborough

said it was the fi rst time in the company’s 16-year history that

it had used industrial equipment on stage.

“FORKLIFT examines the connection and relationship

between humankind and machinery,” she said.

Toyota Material Handling Australia’s executive vice president

and chief operating offi cer Steve Takacs said FORKLIFT was

the company’s fi rst on-stage involvement with the performing

arts.

“We are thrilled to be part of an edgy piece of theatre that is

premiering at the Sydney Festival,” he said.

“The workplace is, of course, quite different to the theatre.

“Toyota designs and builds its forklifts for optimum workplace

health and safety, including the leading-edge feature of

Toyota’s System of Active Stability to reduce the potential of

lateral tip-over.

“However, there can be art in material handling; it is a joy

to watch a top-notch operator manoeuvering a forklift in a

confi ned area,” Mr Takacs said.

Toyota Launches iPhone Service App

Toyota Material Handling Australia has launched a smartphone service application to enable faster and easier logging of service requests.

An android version will also be available for non i-phone users.

The TMHA Service iPhone app directs service requests by email straight to the national service manager and TMHA marketing department, for redirection and action by the nearest branch.

Customers can even include a photograph of the unit or item that requires service.

TMHA general manager, service, Stephen Barnes, said customers will appreciate being able to log service breakdowns on their mobile telephone touch screen.

“Customers can log faults by brand, type of forklift used and type of fault,” he said.

“This means the service technician will arrive at the customer’s premises forearmed with this information and be better equipped to diagnose and fi x the problem.

“TMHA sees this app providing quicker logging of service requests and further raising Toyota’s industry leading customer service standards.”

The TMHA Service iPhone app is easy to set up and use, beginning with a one-page customer profi le registration.

Once registered, users follow a straightforward procedure to log a service with four sections – forklift information, service required, request details and upload photo (if required).

There is an additional screen that provides the nearest service centre, according to the customer’s postcode, and a button for TMHA’s after-hours telephone number.

An “about” page provides generic information for TMHA users.

Each of the four sections is contained on one page and has easy to use menus.

The request details page has drop boxes for brand, unit number, fl eet number and a general screen for comments.

TMHA has a national network of 15 company owned service centres and more than 270 mobile service vans.

It has set the Australian benchmark in service technician training for the last three decades.

TMHA launches versatileBT O-Series reach truck

(TLC) system for fast, secure working at height and an advanced driver cab with the BT ‘total view’ concept.

“The RRE160R also has powerful AC electric motors and 360-degree steering.”

Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) has launched a new versatile reach truck designed to operate on outdoor surfaces.

The new BT Refl ex O-Series Reach Truck has a ground clearance of 145mm and super-elastic tyres.

The increased ground clearance means it can operate on rugged, loose surfaces while the specialist tyres provide secure grip on wet or high-temperature asphalt.

TMHA’s BT & Raymond national sales and product manager, Dean Watson, said the new BT Refl ex O-Series RRE160R adds a new dimension to reach-truck capability.

“It combines the space-saving benefi ts of a narrow-aisle reach truck with the indoor/outdoor fl exibility of a rubber-tyred counter-balance forklift,” he said.

“The RRE160R will give customers maximum fl exibility, increase productivity and help reduce costs.

“Potential buyers include hardware and garden stores, construction companies, dairy and farm producers, and warehouse operators.”

Mr Watson said the BT RRE160R model continues to offer top-level handling performance when working as a traditional reach truck in racking systems.

“It is based on the class-leading BT Refl ex R-Series model, with the wheel and gearbox confi guration adapted to allow for effective work on outdoor surfaces.

“It has a payload capacity of 1600kg and lift heights up to 7500mm.

“Special features include BT’s unique Transitional Lift Control
