From the Executive Director Richard Banz, D.Ed.

As you may already know, we are getting closer to breaking ground on a 15,000-square-foot expansion for our new Research Center. In June, the Mayor and Council of the City of Kennesaw entered into an agreement on behalf of the City for Transportation Enhancement Activities with the Georgia Department of Transportation. The agreement will release federal funds earmarked for the project. This event was carried by numerous local media outlets and was distributed nationally by the Associated Press. Currently the agreement is waiting for final approval by the State. Once this process is concluded, steps will be taken to make the project available for bid. It is our anticipation that the actual groundbreaking will occur later this year.

The new facility has been designed by the local architectural firm of Croft and Associates as an attached addition. It will be located to the rear entrance of the Southern Museum and adjacent to the Jolley Education Center. Once the expansion is complete, the Southern Museum will be home to one of the most significant centers of southeastern railroad archival items available for public research. Collections that will be preserved include 45,000 railroad photographs through the David W. Salter Collection, a one-of-a-kind glass plate negative collection of Glover Machine Works locomotives, and thousands of Southern Railway-related documents through the Southern Railway Historical Association Collections (including the Southern President files from 1872 to 1967). While the majority of material is railroad related, the new Research Center will also maintain an important Civil War collection. Included are Civil War books, Confederate veteran magazines, regimental muster roles, diaries, photographs, letters from Union and Confederate soldiers, and the Colonel James Bogle Collection pertaining to the Great Locomotive Chase of 1862.

The Research Center is only possible due to the generosity of our fantastic friends and community. A total of $1.1 million dollars has been raised for the project. Companies and organizations that have given substantial donations include the Norfolk Southern Foundation, Robert W. Woodruff Foundation, Vaughan Foundation, Inc., Georgia Power Foundation, Inc., AT&T Georgia, CSX Transportation, Metro Bank, Choate Construction Company, Bank of North Georgia, Heritage Club members, and the Robert & Hazel Eubanks Foundation, Inc. Significant individual contributors include Robert Ellison, Raymond Rhoades, Richard Kimball, George Eichelberger, Gary Eubanks, Fred Keith, Martin O’Toole, Tom Owens, Nina Frey, and Paul Chastain. Please consider financially contributing to the new Research Center. Funding is still needed for interior furnishings, map drawers, and archival shelving. The names of all donors contributing $1,000 or more will be permanently recognized inside the new center. Feel free to call me at extension 3177 for information about how to join the Research Center Heritage Club or to discuss other opportunities for giving. As always, thank you for your support.

See you at the museum!

Special Events at the Southern MuseumMake the Southern Museum the unique setting for your next special occasion. From wedding receptions and corporate gatherings to train-themed children’s parties, this incredible educational institution serves as one of Kennesaw’s premier special event venues. With an array of versatile rooms available, the Southern Museum is the perfect location.

The Museum’s Cobb Energy Gallery is ideal for larger events such as wedding receptions, cocktail parties, formal sit-down dinners, and business banquets. With its 200-guest capacity and clean, simple design, this space can be easily transformed to fit the theme of any event.

If you’re looking for something a little less formal and more intimate, the classrooms in the Museum’s Jolley Education Center are another great option. These rooms accommodate smaller parties of 50 or less and like the Cobb Energy Gallery, can be decorated for any occasion.

If you are looking for a more historic feel, the 1908 depot is the perfect space. This Kennesaw landmark has been restored to its early 20th century appearance and includes a small educational exhibit about the city’s history. The depot is an especially popular place for birthday parties, but also serves as a great site for small meetings and family reunions.

Regardless of the style or purpose of your next special event, the Southern Museum evokes the spirit of a Georgia’s bygone era in everyone. Impress your guests and plan a memorable event at the Southern Museum! For more information, call the events coordinator at 770.427.2117, ext. 3058 or email [email protected] to discuss your event or take a tour of the Museum. Members receive a 10% discount on all rentals.

News from the General EmporiumWe have several new items in the gift shop including Norfolk Southern and CSX shirts, General sun catchers and books about the Battle of Pickett’s Mill. CuRatoR’s Column

It was an exciting spring at the Southern Museum as we saw a number of new objects enter into the museum’s collections. In addition to the “Joe Brown” pike described in the previous edition of The Telegraph, we were also grateful to receive a donation of rare Nashville, Chattanooga, and St. Louis Railway (N. C. & St. L.) artifacts by Mr. Leonard Ray Fuqua, Sr. of Hendersonville, Tennessee.

Early this May, he and his family generously presented the museum with three artifacts that offer a glimpse into this railroad’s history: a spittoon bearing the N. C. & St. L. initials, a lantern featuring the same, and a master key that could be used to open any call box along the rail line. Spittoons – once a convenience found in every rail station along the line – may have fallen out of style, and lanterns may have been replaced with electric signals, but the impact that these everyday objects had in creating our modern rail system can still be seen today.

The N. C. & St. L., also known as “The Dixie Line”, began life as the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad, a line that played an important strategic role during the Civil War. In 1891, the railroad began leasing the Western & Atlantic rail line that runs through downtown Kennesaw, creating an indelible association between our town and the N. C. & St. L. that continues to this day. In fact, CSX Transporation, which operates the trains frequently seen passing through downtown, is a direct descendent of the N. C. & St. L.

Donations such as those made by Mr. Fuqua help both the Southern Museum and the community. Our increased collections allow the museum to interpret the past in new and thought-provoking ways, but this can only be accomplished with the help of patrons like you. We are actively pursuing donations of artifacts from the Civil War as well as southeastern railroads like the N. C. & St. L. If you have such an object and would consider donating it, we would love to hear from you. You can also help by donating funds specifically tagged for preserving and enlarging the museum collection. Please call 770.427.2117, ext. 3180 for more information. Thank you for your support.

Are Our Archives Important? By Dick Hillman

The Southern Museum devotes a great deal of time and resources, including money, to the preservation of archives. To differentiate archives from artifacts, archives generally consist of written records, photographs, maps and paper items while artifacts are the larger manufactured items such as weapons, tools, vehicles, etc.. So how do archival collections get utilized? While the Southern Museum is a relatively new facility we have already made substantial contributions to the education of both children and adults, and to the preservation of history. In 2007, we were asked to speak to a large group from the National Railway Historical Society on the subject of the Marietta and North Georgia Railroad. Utilizing our extensive archives, a very interesting and historically accurate presentation was produced.

In 2009, Heimburger Publishing in Chicago produced a large, comprehensive book entitled Trains to Victory. Our facility played an important role in the production of that book by supplying numerous photos. The California State Railroad Museum undertook the restoration of a historically significant railroad passenger car in 2011. To accurately complete the work, they needed documentation of the features of the car’s interior. Our archives had all of the documentation needed. In 2012, a major article was published in Lines South magazine about a local resident who played an interesting role in railroad history over an amazing 50-year-long career. Once again our facility was able to supply both the text and photos for that story. In each of these cases the Southern Museum is given public credit for our contributions giving us credibility as an important cultural resource.

Our library and archives department have repeated students from Kennesaw State and other schools working as a part of their educational requirements. This is a brief review of our activities in the hope that it will answer the question, “Is our archives department important?” Yes it is!
