Sudbury Community House is very proud to have been
awarded the Mirrabooka NAIDOC
Community Organisation of the Year 2017
Sudbury Community House is known as a place where everyone is welcomed
with a friendly atmosphere. The staff at the centre endeavour to support the
community and individuals to reach their goals and pursue personal develop-
ment.
They do not let age, gender or race be a
barrier in this process and strive for
equality for all people. Sudbury Commu-
nity House has given many people the
opportunities. They assist to reconnect
and support their clients and enable them
to further their skills to increase employ-
ment prospects.
Without the support of Sudbury Commu-
nity House many community members
would not receive valuable assistance to
strive to meet their goals, and make posi-
tive contributions to a thriving community
Thank you Sudbury Community House
for all your support.

It is that time of the year again, another Newsletter. I can’t believe that we
are already half way through the year. Doesn’t time fly when you are having
fun?
Talking about having fun - I did not think that we could win an award for hav-
ing fun, but we did. We do enjoy working with the Mirrabooka community
and the surrounding areas and have so much fun whilst working. We did
pick up the award for Mirrabooka NAIDOC Community Organisation of the
Year! Which was a sweet surprise to the staff of Sudbury Community
House, "We were honoured and humbled to receive this Award after years
of working to engage with the Aboriginal community in Mirrabooka and the
surrounding areas".
We would like to see you visit for a cuppa or a chat

The Annual General Meeting of
Sudbury Community House
Association INC
Coming up - details to follow soon
Many hundreds of people came together to participate in the
Mirrabooka NAIDOC celebrations on Monday 3rd July. It was a joyous
day of music, dance, food and fun. The theme for 2017 is Our Languages
Matter. Some 250 distinct Indigenous Language groups covered the con-
tinent at first European contact in the late 18th century. Most of these
languages would have several dialects. Today only around 120 of those
languages are still spoken and many are at risk of being lost as
Elders pass on. Aboriginal and Torres Strait languages are not just a
means of communication, they express knowledge about everything, so
it is vital to recognise the importance, resilience and richness of
language.
It was also a great to time to recognise the many active and committed
community members and organisations who work together to promote
Aboriginal culture, strengths and reconciliation.

It may be cold outside, but with the cold comes more learning and
fun!
Well winter is most certainly here, with the deluge of rain and wind we have been
experiencing of late we have been asked, do you keep children inside even on dry
days so they don’t catch cold?
Common sense and a touch of self-preservation always wins, so it stands to reason
that Educators will not take children outside when the rain is pouring down. How-
ever, on cold days where there is no sign of rain it is important for children to get
outside to run, play and learn. We ask that our families provide proper clothing to
ensure their children stay
warm when we go outside.
The layered approach always
works well. Singlets or skivvies
under a t-shirt, a jumper and
then a jacket to wear outside.
You may wish to provide a
beanie for their head and of
course closed in shoes, rain
boots are great for splashing
in those puddles.
Each year parents are con-
cerned that their children will catch colds and or the flu if they play outside be-
tween the months of June and August. Research by doctors and other health pro-
fessionals suggests that colds and flu are viruses, which are no more common in
cold weather than they are in warm.
Their research also shows that the reason we catch more colds in winter months is
that we tend to stay holed up inside, in
warm buildings with no or poor ventilation,
a perfect breeding ground for viruses such as
cold and flu. An online author and parent
once wrote, “Kids are less likely to catch a
cold playing footy in the sleet than they are
at watching Harry Potter at the local Mega-
plex (it isn’t called the Deathly Hallows for
nothing)”. (Mamamia.com.au)
So come prepared with layered clothing op-
tions, as mentioned above this will help us to
not only develop your children’s social, emo-
tional, cognitive and physical development,
but to also develop their resilience to cold
and flu viruses. (reference: www.healthline.com)

Children need real life,
first hand experiences
Children are observers
and explorers by nature
and through real-life, first
hand experiences they
develop an understanding
of themselves and the en-
vironment they are in. A
child’s all round physical,
emotional, linguistic, cog-
nitive and sensory devel-
opment is fostered
through first hand experi-
ences.
Children need time to ex-
periment and develop
independent thinking
Children need time to play
and explore and experi-
ment with their ideas and
knowledge. They need to
try things out, make mis-
takes, try something else,
repeat their play, and con-
solidate ideas.
