Smart Elephants

Elephants are one of the largest animals on land. Because they are so large, theyhave to eat a lot. They eat roots, grasses, fruit, and bark. They have big, flapping ears andlong trunks.      At the circus, they can stand on a pedestal. At the zoo, they can spray water throughtheir trunks like a fountain. But did you know that elephants can also paint pictures?      Elephants have very large brains. This makes them smart. They also have goodmemories. Elephants stay together in family groups. Parents teach the young elephantshow to eat, use tools, and get along with other elephants. It is important to study howelephants interact because it helps us learn how their brains work.      Elephants are good at solving problems. Even though they have no hands, they canuse tree branches as tools. Their trunk becomes like an arm and they hold the branch toscratch their backs or dig holes. Some elephants can even figure out how to unlock a cageand help the other elephants escape from the zoo! Other elephants can hold a paintbrushin their trunks and paint pictures.      Elephants have feelings. They help each other find food and care for their young. Theygo out of their way to avoid hurting each other. If one elephant gets hurt, the otherelephants stay with him. If one elephant dies, the other elephants mourn. They hang theirheads and are quiet. They are sad.      Elephants also enjoy playing. They splash in the water and make sounds like atrumpet. Some elephants can whistle and copy some sounds of human language.      Elephants can be seen in zoos and circuses. But they also live in the wild in Africa,India, and Asia. Some live in grassy areas. Others live in the rain forests. They livewherever they can find food and water. Sometimes they have to travel long distances tofind food. Because of their smarts and social skills, elephants are able to survive difficultconditions.      Still, elephants are very special animals. Greater efforts should be made to protectthem in the wild.
