This information is aligned to the AustralianaCurriculum, to the expectations of the achievement standard ofthe year level your child is in. You will also notice some information about the level ofachievement your child is working at in each learning area orsubject. For example, if the comment says “working well abovethe achievement level”, it means your child is working wellabove the expected year level passing standard (C Standard),but still at a year level appropriate to their age.

Below is an example of how an English comment will look for astudent in Prep:

Active School Travel

Friday 18 May was Walk Safely to School Day. Jindalee StateSchool participates in this annual, national event each year. This year, we recognised the day through the participation ofstudents and staff in a walking bus along Burrendah Road. Thisevent was attended by our local adopt-a-cop Senior ConstableBen Harm, Police Beat volunteers, Jindalee State School staff, parents and students. These participants enjoyed a sausagesizzle upon their arrival at our school. It was fantastic to see over140 students participate in this event and promote this annual, national event.

Digital Learning

Minecraft Education Edition Pilot

During Term 2, selected Jindalee State School students havebeen participating in a Minecraft Education Edition pilot runby the Department of Education. Minecraft EDU is being usedto engage students in science, technology, engineering andmathematics, including coding.

Minecraft Education Edition is specifically designed forclassroom use and includes the additional functionality forteachers to set tasks and assignments, lock down worlds topre-selected players, and monitor student interactions.

Under the guidance of Digital Learning Coordinator, TracyHume, Classroom Teacher, Mrs Caitlin Pfrunder, and ITTechnician, Chad Waugh, students have been exploring howMinecraftEDU can be used as an educational tool that is alignedwith the Australian Curriculum. Students have been usingMinecraftEDU to develop skills in measurement, mapping, ratio, scale, financial maths and to collaborate as part of a team tosolve problems.

There have been two specific groups working on projectsthroughout the term. Lead Tech Students have been meetingon a Thursday lunchtime and 4P students have been workingon their projects as part of their Digital Technology lessons.Part of the collaborative teamwork has seen a different teamleader selected each week to be the project manager. This has

2

given students the opportunity to develop their collaborationand decision making skills, at the same time linking learning toreal life experiences such as providing a client with a product, meeting deadlines and impacts if design deadlines are not met.

Lead Tech students worked collaboratively in five smallergroups with each group consisting of students from Year 3 – 6.This group has designed and built a replica of the school Adminbuilding and surrounding areas.

4P has aligned their project to their Curriculum learning aboutPre-Settlement and recreated the Old Bailey, The Hulk PrisonShip, England Countryside and English Towns of the period.

This has been a wonderful learning opportunity for thesestudents and they are now going to apply their experiences tocreating a persuasive argument to Mrs Rodgers on how the useof MinecraftEDU in the curriculum can benefit student learning.

Book Week Theme 2018 is “Find Your Treasure.”

Leading up to Book Week, I will be looking for my “LivingTreasures” i.e. students who are:

Photographs and captions will be added to say why they aremy “Living Treasures,” and these photographs will be displayedon the wall at the library entrance.

Here’s my first “living treasure.”

Timmy 1W for helping me tidy up the library after second breakwithout any request from me. Thank you so much Timmy, youare a living treasure!

On Thursday night, Lavinia Donaldson and I attended a talkby Morris Gleiztmann, an author of over forty books and thecurrent Children’s Laureate. As the Children’s Laureate, his taskis promoting the importance of reading.

His laureateship will be “Stories make us, stories create ourfuture.” He stressed “the power of good books to inspireempathy, resilience and positive thinking.” In stories, he said, readers are “exposed to protagonists who form empatheticcapacity and resilience and follow them on their journey as theygrapple with problems.”

He mentioned that together with him, school libraries andlibraries make up the team who over many years, havecontinued to read stories and promote stories to theircommunity.

Jindalee library staff has always seen it as part of their role, totry and find that “Goldilocks” book for our readers. That is “justthe right book for that reader.”

Gleitzmann says “We only need to have the one experience ofone story that we engage with so deeply, that it takes over ourlife so completely and changes us in all sorts of ways.”

Given the opportunity, the reader will continue to seek outtheir next “Goldilocks” book and hopefully become a reader ofstories for life.
