Key Learning

Understanding and Producing Non-Fiction Texts- preparing for the MOCK

In this crucial revision unit, learners read, explore and interpret a range of non-fiction texts ready for their examination in GCSE English Language (worth 60% of their final grade) in the summer of Year 11. Using texts, such as newspapers, charity leaflets and websites, learners are engaged and challenged; they are offered the opportunity to think for themselves, work independently and use talk to develop their written responses. Learners receive feedback throughout the unit and are assessed in a mock examination in January.

Pre-exposure homework

1. Use the Collins English revision guide (available from school) to revisit your knowledge of this unit from Year 10.

2. Read good quality broadsheet newspapers in preparation for the level of sophistication required for this unit.

3. Have a look at revision clips on ‘You Tube’, especially by WCSEnglish, Mr Davies and Cheney Takeaway Teacher.

Peak performance – movement and exercise

Peak performance – circulation

Peak performance – energy balance

Pre-exposure homework

1. Search YouTube for ‘Inside the Human Body First to Last BBC’ and watch the video clips about the fire fighters and the Iceman. Consider how in each example the body works to stay alive. Be ready to discuss your ideas during the topic.

2. Go to the BBC Nature website and click on the video collections link. Click on the ‘Going, going, gone’ section and view some of the video clips. Be prepared to talk about your views using these examples in lessons within the B7 topic.

term equilibrium?

What are the stages involved in chemical analysis?

Why are chromatography techniques and titrations important and how do we carry out these procedures?

You are going to do an investigation into a factor that affects the energy change during a reaction.

Pre-exposure homework

1. Do some preliminary research and prepare a list with explanations of the factors that could affect the size of the energy change in a reaction between zinc metal and copper sulfate solution.

2. What happens in the reaction? 3. How can you measure the energy change?

Continue Unit 1(E) Me, Myself and 1 GCSE MOCK EXAM GCSE exam prep

Students will: Finish observational recording skills using a variety of techniques. Produce a series of expressive collaged poly block prints. Research artists who explore personal identity in their work. Research and develop ideas based on one of 4 chosen themes.( 3 weeks prep time) Complete a final outcome based on their research (5 hour exam) Students will have 8 week exam preparation period to produce a sketchbook in response to their chosen theme; this will begin the week starting 21st Jan. Further detailed information will be provided closer to this time.

10 hour art exam producing final outcome. Exam period from 21 – 27th March.

(the last week of the Spring term).

Pre-exposure homework

Me, myself & I All students must complete their artist research task & four portraits over half term Mock exam All students will be given a checklist of focused activities in preparation for their Mock exam.

APPLIED BUSINESS Controlled Assessment

Students will begin working on the final part of the controlled assessment. The final controlled assessment investigates the stakeholders of each of the chosen businesses. Students will learn who stakeholders are, what their objectives are and how conflict between the different stakeholder groups can occur. Students will then consider the relative importance of each stakeholder

in terms of the influence they have on the firm. Class time this half term will be broadly split into three separate parts:

Learning key topics from section 1.3 and setting of tasks.

Note taking, research and preparation.

The writing up of home based research under exam conditions.

Pre-exposure homework

During the term students will need to be making their notes at home from the revision they have done so that they are ready to write up in class. Students should research their two chosen organisations in detail so that they have a more complete understanding of what they want to write in the controlled assessment.

Controlled Assessment Completion Begin final Finance Unit

Students will complete the remainder of the Controlled Assessment. It is likely that this will take all of the half term. If however the controlled assessment is completed early then students will progress onto the finance unit. Students will learn how businesses manage money. They will learn about the different sources of finance and how businesses track cash flow. Students will carry out break even analysis on a variety of different products and then learn how to analyse final accounts.

Pre-exposure homework

To support their classroom studies students should go to the website http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/business/ Choose the Finance option then revise each of the finance and accounts topics before taking the tests for each section. The readers and activities on GCSE Bitesize are quite accessible and will be a nice foundation on which to build more complex topics during lessons.
