Abstract
A vibratory machine (vibroflot) is used for solidifying ground, which consists of a
cylindrical beam, a motor and an eccentricity rotor. The motor and the eccentricity rotor are
attached to the top and bottom of the cylindrical beam, respectively, linked though a central
axis. During a working process, the turning eccentricity rotor results in the vibration of the
cylindrical beam of vibroflot.
In order to analyze the beam vibration of the vibroflot, a theoretical model has been
proposed which was built on the basis of a rectangular model. The working model consists
of a rectangular steel plate suspended from a supporting bar through a thin cloth and
variable masses were attached to the bottom and to the top of the steel plate. Using this
working model, the effects of the weight of top mass and bottom mass, the thickness of the
steel plate, as well as the length of the suspending cloth have been systematically
investigated. The experimental results agreed satisfactorily with the theoretical prediction.
Using the rectangular working model, although the experimental results are consistent
well with the theoretical prediction, it was pained that the beam of the practical machine is
a cylinder, which is different with the rectangular beam. Therefore, the rectangular working
model was revised using a cylindrical beam instead of rectangular steel plate beam in order
to go a step further prove that our theoretical model applies the vibrational analysis of
vibroflot in general case.
The new working model consists of a suspended cylindrical beam connected with a
supporting bar though a wire, a motor and an eccentricity rotor, which were attached to the
top and bottom of the cylinder through a central axis. Using our theoretical model to deal
with the new working model, the experimental results are consistent well theoretical
prediction.

Chapter 1
Background of research
1.1. Introduction
Vibroflot is a device using physical soil improvement, which is often efficient in stabilizing the soft
cohesionless soils (sandy soils) by the vibration stabilization techniques. The physical method called
vibroflotation method [Ref.1~13], in which the vibration of a vibroflot beam is utilized to improve the
soft cohesionless soils (sandy soils). Since the vibration of a vibroflot beam provides the power for
soil improvement, thus the vibratory characteristics of a vibroflot beam are necessary to investigate.
This research is an experimental analysis about the vibratory characteristic of a vibroflot beam in
order to guide the designing calculation for the company of the manufacturing vibroflot. The present
theoretical analysis is experimentally verified and can be more accurately calculate the natural
frequency than the method that is used in company now. The rotation speed of motor should be more
accurately chosen in order to get larger amplitude to work and be kept away from dangerous
resonance. Thus the vibratory characteristics of vibroflot beam are the objectives of the present
research.
In this chapter, some information of soil improvement and vibroflot are explained. The status quo of
research is also introduced about the vibration of a beam, and the reason is explained why the present
research is chosen.
1.2. Soil improvement
It is known that the bearing capacity of the buildings is come from the foundation, so the
characteristic of ground must be investigated before the construction work start. In general case, the
soft ground always will be improved from the viewpoint of the safety of the upper buildings. So the
soil improvement and soft ground est. are simply introduced later.
1.2.1. Soft ground
The ingredient of the soil that consists of ground particle, water and air, and it influences the
characteristic of ground.

In foundation investigation, the soft ground is often judged by bearing capacity of soil. In general,
the ground was called soft ground, which the bearing capacity is less than 3 tons/m2 (standard from
Incorporated company BOK, Japan).
The soft ground is also divided two types by the characteristics of soil, soft cohesion soils and soft
cohesionless soils. The soft cohesive soil means a soil that when unconfined has considerable strength
when air-dried and that has significant cohesion when submerged, and the soft cohesiveless soil
(sandy soil) means a soil that when unconfined has little or no strength when air-dried and that has
little or no cohesion when submerged.
31% of continental area on our earth is sandy soil or desert, with a total area amounting to
48,000,000 km2. While the world population continuously increasing, the arable area is ceaselessly
decreasing due to expanding of deserts.
Densification of the soft cohesionless soils (sandy soil) is carried out using shock and vibration.
Vibroflotation is used to improve poor foundations. The process may decreasesettlement by more than
50% and the shearing strength of treated soils is increases substantially. Vibrations can convert loosely
packed soils into a denser state.
1.2.2. Soil improvement
Soil improvement
Soil improvement is a process that makes the density of ground becomes larger, the ratios of water
and air decreases; and make the ground strong to improve the ability of bearing capacity of soil.
Methods of soil improvement
The methods of soil improvement have four types based on the effect characteristics such as physic,
chemistry, biology and heating.
a). Chemical method
The chemistry method of ground improvement is a process that the ground is instilled the chemical
martial such as cement and lime, which make a chemical reaction with the water or air. The products
of the reaction contact with the ground particle, and decrease the ratios of the water and the air. Thus

the density of ground was improved.
b). Heat method
Heating to higher temperatures can result in significant permanent property improvements, including
decreases in water sensitivity, swelling, and compressibility; and increases in strength. Dry or partly
saturated weak clayey soils and loess are well suited for this type of treatment, which is presently
regarded as experimental.
c). Biology method
The biology method is a ground improvement method that was developed recently. It often use a
vegetation method to slope part which is the only practical biology method for soil improves
d). Physic method
The physic method of ground improvement is a method that based on a physical action such as
substitution, bundle hardening, and reinforcement, to improve the foundation.
In the physic method, the soil improvement has many method of construction by the work form. Such
as the replacing method, the high-densities method and the draining method, all of them are the physic
method. The vibroflot machine is used for making the foundation to high-densities, which is studying
at present.
Influence on sandy soil improvement
To the process of soil improvement, the influence factors on soil improvement are given as follows.
1. The size of soil particle
2. The size of filling martial
3. The permeability
4. The relative void ratio of the soil
1.2.3. Purpose of soil improvement
a) Improve liquefaction intensity
The factor of safety against liquefaction (FS), as defined in this thesis, is the ratio of Capacity to
Demand. To increase FS, the Capacity of the soil can be increases, the Demand imposed on the soil

can be decreases, or both the Capacity and Demand can changed (increases or decreased) in such a
way that there is a net increase in their ratio.
b) Decreases land subsidence
Land subsidence is the lowering of the land-surface elevation from changes that take place
underground. Common causes of land subsidence from human activity are pumping water, oil, and
gas from underground reservoirs; dissolution of limestone aquifers (sinkholes); collapse of
underground mines; drainage of organic soils; and initial wetting of dry soils.
c) Improve the support power and the building stability.
The support power and the building stability are clearly important to the building of the ground
surface. If they were not strong, the building would be easy to be destroyed by the external force such
as earthquake or the weight of itself.
1.3. Vibroflot
The vibroflot consists of a cylindrical beam, a motor and an eccentricity rotor, and it is hung though
a wire by a crane in working. The motor and the eccentricity rotor are attached to the top and bottom
of the cylindrical beam, respectively, linked through a central axis. During a working process
(Fig.1-4), the turning eccentricity rotor results in the vibration of the cylindrical beam of vibroflot.
The vibroflot is used to make a cylindrical, vertical hole under its own weight by jetting to the desired
depth. Then, 1/2- to 1- cubic yard coarse granular backfill, usually gravel or crushed rock 3/4 to 1 inch
is dumped in, and the vibroflot is used to compact the gravel vertically and radically into the
surrounding soft soil. The process of backfilling and compaction by vibration is continued until the
densified stone column reaches the surface.
Vibroflotion method is presently considered to be one of the premier methods for densifying deep
sand deposits. The combined vibrator and extension tubes are referred to as the vibroflot. A
schematic diagram of the Eq.ipment and process is given in Figure 1-1. As depicted in this figure, the
vibroflot is usually jetted into the ground to the desired depth of improvement. The soil densities
during withdrawal of the vibroflot as a result of lateral and torsional vibrations while the vibroflot is

repeatedly inserted and withdrawn in about 1m increments. The cavity that forms at the surface is
backfilled with sand or gravel to form a column of densified soil (Mitchell and Gallagher 1998). The
anatomy of a densities zone is further illustrated in Figure 1-2. The displacement amplitudes are
shown in Fig1-3.

The interaction of the vibroflot and the surrounding soil is very complex, especially when water and
backfill are introduced into the borehole during vibration. A conceptual illustration of the interaction

and the induced stresses and strains on the surrounding soil is shown in Figure 1-4.

The approximate variation of the post-treated relative density as a function of the tributary
area per compaction point and soil type is shown in Figure 1-5. Although this figure may be
used to select the initial spacing of the compaction points, field tests should be performed to
finalize the design.
1.4. Objectives
In the front, the vibroflot and the information of soft ground and soil improvement were introduced;
this is not the objective of the present research. Although the vibroflot is introduced in [Ref.14-22],
the scope of the research was limited to geotechnics. The objective of the present research is
classification of the vibratory characteristics of a vibroflot beam.
Mizoda Company (Japan) had designed and manufactured the vibroflot with an 8 m long beam. In
their designing calculation, the vibrated speed of an inertia wheel of cylindrical beam was calculated
by a method that is a half of the natural frequency’s sum of the free-free boundary conditions and the
fixed-free boundary conditions. The relationship between the natural frequencies and the structural

parameters such as the length of the hanging wire, the weight of the eccentricity rotor, and the weight
of a motor, the cylindrical beam length, and a cylindrical cross-sectional area etc., were not
investigated. Thus using this method, the natural frequency can not be accurately calculated. To a
vibroflot, one hand we need to choose the rotation speed of a motor to keep away from the natural
frequency that is dangerous for resonance, on the other hand we try to choose the rotation speed of
motor to approach the range of resonance in order to get larger amplitude to work. Thus the hanging
beam’s natural frequency of the vibroflot needs to be accurately calculated.
Although the researches about beam were introduced using different methods or different form under
the different really situations in journals[22-41], from machinery dynamics of view, these researches
can be summarized to five types, the free-free boundary conditions[22,27], the fixed-fixed boundary
condition[27,36-41], the fixed-free boundary condition[22,27-35], the simply support-free boundary
conditions[25,26,27] and support-support boundary conditions[22-24,27].
G. R. LIU AND T. Y. WU [Ref.22] had studied a straight Euler beam which had stepped
cross-section only at one place under the Four types of boundary conditions (pinned, clamped, free an
sliding).
Chen and Tan [Ref.23] performed a research of an elastically supported-supported beam which has a
moving oscillator on the upper surface. And Ref 14 shows a simply support-free condition beam,
which has a moving mass, Ref.27, 39 and 41 given the researches of a supported-supported beam,
which has one or two mass in different positions.
Ref.25 and 31 shows vibration analysis of a rotating beam. And Ref.35 had given a discussion of an
elastic beam, which was fixed on a moving cart and carrying a concentrated or moving mass.
Although the beam vibration in these researches is well discussed, the present boundary condition of a
vibroflot beam is different with the boundary condition of above researches. The present boundary
condition is a variable boundary condition. The boundary condition is varied between the simply
support-free boundary condition and the free-free boundary condition. The effect factor is the length of
the hanging wire; the vibration will simulate simply support-free boundary condition, as the length of

the hanging wire is very short; otherwise the vibration will follow the free-free boundary condition.
So a theoretical analysis model is proposed and then the relationship of vibrational characterizes of
the vibroflot beam with above mentioned 5 parameters were studied. The analysis is experimentally
verified using a rectangular and a cylindrical working model.
Using the rectangular working model, the relationship between the natural frequency and the effects
of the length of the hanging rope, the thickness of plate (area of cross-section) and the bottom load
were theoretically and experimentally investigated
And in order to investigate the relationship between the amplitude and bottom load, hanging rope
length in the forced vibration, the cylindrical working model of a vibroflot is designed. This
cylindrical working model is more similar to a practical vibroflot and easy to deduce the information
of a practical vibroflot.
The purpose of this research is to develop the theoretical analysis method and to verify it
experimentally.
The details of the objectives are as follows.
A) A theoretical model is developed and the relationship of vibrational characterizes of the vibroflot
with above mentioned 5 parameters are studied
B) The present theoretical model is experimentally verified in the case the free lateral vibration
using a rectangular working model.
C) The present theoretical model is experimentally verified in the case the free lateral vibration and
forced lateral vibration using a cylindrical working model.
1.5. Scope of the thesis
This thesis includes the following contents:
Chapter 1 gives an introduction about research background, and explains the reason for choosing this
project. After that the object of the research is shown.
Chapter 2 will introduce the working models of a vibroflot that are used in experiments in order to
obtain the information of a vibroflot. Then the working model and the experimental method will be

explained.
Chapter 3 will introduce a detail of the pendulous vibration analysis, which is necessary because the
two-degree pendulous vibration always take place when the beam is vibrating in the lateral vibration.
The theoretical model of two-degree vibration, the theoretical analysis method, the calculated results
and results of discussion will all be shown in this section.
Chapter 4 will show the details of the analysis and experimental results of the free lateral vibration
based on a rectangular working model. The larger influence coefficient of the hanging rope or wire
length can be obtained by the rectangular working model. That can experimentally verify a view of
the present theoretical analysis. Following the theoretical analysis, the lateral vibration will tend to the
vibration of the simply support-free boundary conditions, as the influence coefficient of the hanging
rope or wire length is comparatively large. This is a reason why not directly using a cylindrical
working model. In this chapter, the theoretical model of the free lateral vibration, the theoretical
analysis method, the results of calculation and experiment, and results of discussion will all be
introduced. Some conclusions will be obtained there.
Chapter 5 will give a research about the analysis and experiment based on a cylindrical working
model. In order to verify present theoretical analysis that was done in chapter 4, it is or not applied to
the cylindrical working model, the experiment of free lateral vibration is done again. The calculated
and measured results of free lateral vibration are also given and discussed.
And the theoretical analysis method of the forced lateral vibration is introduced too based on the
cylindrical working model in this chapter. The results of calculation and experiment, and then
discussion on the forced lateral vibration are also shown in this section. Some conclusions will be
obtained there.
Chapter 6 will give the conclusions of this research until now based on the calculated and measured
results of the free and forced lateral vibration. And the works of this reach in future is introduced.

Chapter 2
Experimental Apparatus
2.1. Introdution
Since a vibroflot is large-sized Eq.ipment, the installation of a practical machine is difficult to
experiment in laboratory. So the vibroflot is simplified [Ref.1-3] and working models are
manufactured for the experiment, and the vibration characteristic of the vibroflot system will be
investigated. In this chapter, working models of a vibroflot are introduced and the experimental
system is explained. Based on the factor of influence on the practical vibroflot, the working model is
designed and manufactured. And using the working models, the experiments are done.
2.2. Working models
The motion of a working vibroflot is a complex motion that includes the pendulous motion and the
lateral forced vibration. Although the lateral vibration is a present object, in fact the pendulous motion
always takes places when the vibroflot is working in the way shown in following Fig.2-1.

Figure.2-1 shows the motion track of the beam is a circle. The motion is caused by the amplitudes
progressing of the cylindrical surface. Thus the motion can be analyzed in a plane shows in Fig.2-2.
Fig.2-2 shows a simplified state of a working vibroflot motion. On the simplified system, it moves

only in y direction.

Herein there is the pendulous motion and lateral vibration in the motion of a vibroflot, both of which
are analyzed independently. The pendulous motion will be introduced in Chater.3, and the lateral
vibration will be introduced in Chater.4, 5.

Although the body of a vibroflot is a cylindrical beam, it is assumed consisted of many rectangular
plate in the direction of axis. Thus the cylindrical beam can be simplified as a rectangular plate beam
that is shown in figure.2-3. Setting the upper mass and the bottom mass on the top and the bottom of
the rectangular, which were thought as the motor and the eccentricity rotor, which are attached to the

top and the bottom of the cylindrical beam of a vibroflot, respectively; and it showed in figuar.2-4.
The rectangular beam was simulated to the practical working machine that was hung though a thin
cloth (or wire). Using the hanging rectangular beam (shown in figure.2-6) as the experimental
working model, the theoretical analysis of a vibroflot was experimentally proved which was
introduced in chapter 4 and 5.

Figure 2-5 shows the beam that is used in the experiments. The length of the beam is 704mm; the
both ends having a 2mm step that is used to attach to the top mass and bottom mass. The thickness of

the beam is 1, 2 or 3mm, and the width of the beam is 20mm.
The rectangular working model (shown in Fig.2-6) consists of a rectangular beam(3 in Fig.2-6)
suspended from a supporting bar(1 in Fig.2-6) through a thin cloth(4 in Fig.2-6) and variable
masses were attached to the bottom (2 in Fig.2-6) and to the top (5 in Fig.2-6) of the steel plate. And a
photo of the hanging beam is shown in Fig.2-7.

The experiment system consists of a
ccumulation device (KEYENCE-NR350) and a computer that is shown in Fig2-11. The experimental

installation includes working model and a suspended bar that is used to hang the working model.
In the experiment of free vibration, the dynamic strain gauge is pasted on the vibrated beam. Signals

riment of a forced vibration by using the above mentioned system, the voltage value of

ccur and are sent to the amplifier. The amplified signal is acquired by data accumulation a device
(KEYENCE-NR350). Then FFT analysis is performed by using PC data processor and saved in the
computer.
In the expe
he dynamic strain gauges was measured as the bottom load and the length of wire is changed, and
was changed into the moment of force in order to compare the experimental results with the theritical
moment of force. By the compairision, the theritiacal amplitude of the forced vibration was estemated.
In the experiment of free vibration by the rectangular plate beam, the weight of the upper part is
ixed while the length of cloth, the thicknesses of a beam and bottom load were changed, and the
natural frequencies were measured. And in the experiment of a free vibration by using the cylindrical
model, the bottom load and the length of wire were changed.

The Pendulous Vibration Analysis
3.1. Introduction
The free vibration analysis of a hanging beam includes the analysis of pendulous vibration and
lateral vibration. In this chapter, the analysis of the pendulous vibration is explained. There are
several methods of the pendulous motion analysis, herein the Lagrange method is used to analyze the
pendulous motion (Ref.1~5), and to calculate the frequency of the pendulous motion.
3.2. Analysis of free pendulous vibration
Following the calculation model (figure 3-1), the frequency of the two-degree pendulum is
calculated by the Lagrange’s equation of motion that is given below.

By the frequency equation of the two-degree pendulum, the frequency of the two-degree pendulum
was determined under the experimental conditions. The results are shown in following tables in the
case the different rope lengths and the different thicknesses of the plate beam.The following tables

Table 3-4 shows the second frequency of the two-degree pendulum increases because the center of
gravity of the plate beam decreases and the inertia moment of force to the gravity center of the plate
beam increases as the bottom load increases.
Table 3-5 shows the first frequencies of the two-degree pendulum decreases that caused by the center
of gravity of the plate beam decrease as the bottom loads increase.
Table 3-6 shows the second frequency of the two-degree pendulum increase that caused by the center
of gravity of the plate beam decrease and the inertia moment of force to the gravity center of the plate
beam increase as the bottom loads increase.
The table 3-3, 3-5 and 3-4, 3-6 show the frequencies of the two-degree pendulum decreases as the
hanging rope length increases. The first frequency of the two-degree pendulum decreases and the
second frequency of the two-degree pendulum increases as the bottom load increases. The reason is the
center of gravity of the pendulous vibration system decreases as the hanging rope length increases.

3.6 Conclusion
Although the frequency of the two-degree pendulum was calculated by the above analysis, the
vibration of the two-degree pendulum is not our researching object. While dealing with the lateral
vibration, if both the lateral vibration and the vibration of the two-degree pendulum were considered
together, theoretical analysis would became too complicated to be applied to a designing calculation
of a practical vibroflot. The frequency of the two-degree pendulum was calculated to get important
reference date in the designing calculation of a practical vibroflot.

Chapter 4
Analysis and Experiment of Free Vibration
(Based on a Rectangular Working Model)
4.1 Introduction
In chapter 3, the analysis of the two-degree pendulous vibration was done basing on a rectangular
beam. In this chapter, a theoretical analysis model of the free lateral vibration based on the rectangular
working model was given and experimentally proved.
4.2. Analytical Method
In order to analyze the bending motion of the hanging beam, the coordinate was built as shown in
Fig.4-1. The origin of the fixed coordinate X-O-Y was chosen at the top of the rope, the gravity
direction was treated as X and the perpendicular direction to the gravity direction was treated as Y.
Since the motion of the beam was a flexural vibration by the bending and pendulous vibration, the
origin of the moving coordinate x-o-y was chosen at the top of the beam in the pendulous vibration,
the axial direction of the beam was treated as x and the perpendicular direction to the beam axis was
treated as y. The elastic vibration was treated in the moving coordinate system. The Lagrange equation
was taken here.

Hence we can say that the vibrational behavior of a vibroflot consists of vibrations due to the
combination of both free-free and simply support-free conditions. So the natural frequencies are also
influenced by both conditions. The degree of influence of both conditions changes with the length of
the hanging rope. As lr→0 or α3→∞, namely as the lengths approaches to 0, the vibrational
behavior becomes similar to the hinged-free vibration. Furthermore, as lr→∞ or α3→0, the
vibrational behavior becomes similar to the free-free condition.
In order to investigate the influence of the hanging rope length and the magnitude of bottom mass on
the natural frequency of a beam, and also to verify the above-mentioned tendency, hanging rope length
and the lower end mass were varied in the present experiment and vibration frequency was measured.
The ratio of the beam length to the hanging rope length was changed from 1.4 to 140. Also the
calculation values by Eq.4-67 and Eq.4-63 are compared with the first measured natural frequencies in
the case the shortest hanging rope length and with the second measured natural frequencies in the case
the longest hanging rope length, respectively. The results of the comparisons should verify the present
theoretical analysis that vibrational behaviors of a vibroflot consists of vibrations due to the
combination of both free-free and simply support-free boundary conditions and the influence degree of
two boundary conditions change with the length of the hanging rope.
4.3. Experimental Results and Discussions
In the present experiment, three kinds of rectangular plate with different thickness and five kinds of
bottom mass were employed while only one kind of top mass was used. The effect of rope length was

investigated along with effect of the bottom mass and the beam thickness. Steel rectangular beams
(l=700mm, E=2.1×1011Pa, ρ=7.85×103kg/m3) of thickness 1mm, 2mm and 3mm were used for the
experiments. The magnitude of the top mass was kept 39.8g and the bottom mass varied from 0 to
245g. The length ratio of the beam to the hanging rope (l/lr) was chosen as 140, 23.3, 5.8, 4.1 and 1.4
in the experiments. The specifics of the experiment values for parameters α1, α2 and α3 vs. m2 are listed
in Table 1. In the subscripts, 1, 2 and 3mm show the thickness of the beam tested.

In the case that the plate beam thickness is 1mm, the upper mass coefficient of the ratio α1 is 0.338
and kept constant. The eccentric load coefficient of the ratio α2is varied from 0 to 2.086. The influence
coefficients of the wire length α3 are variable in a range form 3.016 to 711.6, increasing as the bottom
mass increases; and decreases as the wire length increases.
Fig. 4-2 shows the calculated results of the first natural frequency of the plate beam as a function of
hanging rope length and the bottom loads. The calculated first natural frequency decreases as the length
of hanging rope increase or the ratio (l/lr) decreases in the case that the bottom mass coefficient of the
ratio α2 is constant. On the other hand in the case that the length of hanging rope or the ratio (l/lr) is
constant; the calculated first natural frequency decreases as the bottom load increases when the ratio
(l/lr) is very large; the calculated first natural frequency increases as the bottom load increases when the
ratio (l/lr) is small.

Fig.4-3 shows the corresponding experimental results of the Fig. 4-2. The measured first natural
frequency changes from 6.462Hz to 1.431Hz by the variable bottom load and the variable length of
hanging rope. In the case that the length of hanging rope is the shortest (l/lr=140), the measured first
natural frequency decreases from 6.462Hz to 4.761Hz; in the case that the length of hanging wire is
the longest (l/lr=1.4), it increases from 1.431Hz to 1.855Hz as the bottom load increases (α2 increases
from 0 to 2.086). Thus the measured first natural frequency decreases as the length of hanging rope
increases or the ratio (l/lr) decreases in the case that the eccentric load coefficient of the ratio α3 is
constant. It is shown that the results of the measured first natural frequency approach to the calculated
results.
Similarly, Fig. 4-4 shows the theoretical values of second natural frequency as a function of hanging
rope length and the bottom load. The theoretical second natural frequency changes from 15.25Hz to
6.031Hz by the variable bottom load and the variable length of hanging rope. In the case that the
length of hanging wire is the shortest (l/lr=140), the theoretical second natural frequency increases
from 13.23Hz to 15.25Hz; in the case that the length of hanging wire is the longest (l/lr=1.4), it
decreases from 8.550 Hz to 6.031Hz as the eccentricity rotor load increases (α2 increases from 0 to
2.086). Thus the theoretical second natural frequency decreases as the length of hanging rope
increases or the ratio (l/lr) decreases in the case that the bottom load coefficient of the ratioα3 is
constant
Fig. 4-5 shows the corresponding experimental results of the Fig.4-4. The measured second natural
frequency changed from 14.23Hz to 5.811Hz by the variable bottom loads and the variable length of
the hanging rope. In the case the bottom load coefficient of the ratio α2 is constant, the measured
result decrease that tend to the frequency of the free-free boundary condition vibration as the length of
the hanging rope increases.
Hence, the first natural frequency tends to 0 as the hang rope length is very long or α3 is very small.
In this case, the vibration decreases to 0. Thus the vibration takes place basing on the second natural
frequency when the hanging rope length is very long. That verified the present theoretical analysis
that the vibration will follow the free-free boundary condition, when the hanging rope is very long or
α3 is very small.

b) Results of experiments on the beam thickness (2mm)
In the case that the plate beam thickness is 1mm, the upper mass coefficient of the ratio α1 is 0.167
and kept constant. The eccentric load coefficient of the ratio α2is varied from 0 to 1.032. The influence
coefficients of the wire length α3 are variable in a range form 0.665 to 125.2, increasing as the bottom
mass increases; and decreases as the wire length increases.
Fig. 4-6 shows the calculated results of the first natural frequency of the plate beam as a function of
hanging rope length and the bottom loads. The calculated first natural frequency decreases as the
length of hanging rope increase or the ratio (l/lr) decreases in the case that the bottom mass coefficient
of the ratio α2 is constant. On the other hand in the case that the length of hanging rope or the ratio
(l/lr) is constant; the calculated first natural frequency decreases as the bottom load increases when the
ratio (l/lr) is very large; the calculated first natural frequency increases as the bottom load increases
when the ratio (l/lr) is small.
Fig.4-7 shows the corresponding experimental results of the Fig. 4-6. The measured first natural
frequency changes from 13.24Hz to 1.819Hz by the variable bottom load and the variable length of
hanging rope. In the case that the length of hanging rope is the shortest (l/lr=140), the measured first
natural frequency decreases from 13.24Hz to 8.567 Hz; in the case that the length of hanging wire is
the longest (l/lr=1.4), it increases from 1.587Hz to 1.819Hz as the bottom load increases (α2 increases
from 0 to 1.032). Thus the measured first natural frequency decreases as the length of hanging rope

increase or the ratio (l/lr) decreases in the case that the eccentric load coefficient of the ratio α3 is
constant. It is shown that the results of the measured first natural frequency approach to the calculated
results.
Similarly, Fig. 4-8 shows the theoretical values of second natural frequency as a function of hanging
rope length and the bottom load. The theoretical second natural frequency changes from 20.83Hz to
11.83Hz by the variable bottom load and the variable length of hanging rope. In the case that the
length of hanging wire is the shortest (l/lr=140), the theoretical second natural frequency decreases
from 20.83Hz to 19.04Hz; in the case that the length of hanging wire is the longest (l/lr=1.4), it
decreases from18.20Hz to11.83Hz as the eccentricity rotor load increases (α2 increase from 0 to
1.032). Thus the theoretical second natural frequency decreases as the length of hanging rope increase
or the ratio (l/lr) decreases in the case that the bottom load coefficient of the ratioα3 is constant
Fig. 4-9 shows the corresponding experimental results of the Fig.4-8. The measured second natural
frequency changed from 21.65Hz to 11.39 Hz by the variable bottom loads and the variable length of
the hanging rope. In the case the bottom load coefficient of the ratio α2 is constant, the measured
result decrease that tend to the frequency of the free-free boundary condition vibration as the length of
the hanging rope increases.
Hence, the first natural frequency tends to 0 as the hang rope length is very long or α3 is very small.

In the case that the plate beam thickness is 3mm; the upper mass coefficient of the ratio α1 is 0.115
and kept constant. The bottom load coefficient of the ratio α2 is varied from 0 to 0.706. The influence
coefficients of the rope length α3 are variable in a range form 0.275 to 44.90, increasing as the bottom
mass increases; and decreases as the rope length increases
Fig. 4-10 shows the calculated result of the first natural frequencies of the plate beam as a function
of hanging rope length and the bottom loads. The calculated first natural frequency decreases as the
length of hanging rope increases or the ratio (l/lr) decreases in the case that the bottom load coefficient
of the ratio α2 is constant. On the other hand in the case that the length of hanging rope or the ratio
(l/lr) is constant, the calculated first natural frequency increases as the bottom load increases.
Fig.4-11 shows the corresponding experimental result of the Fig. 4-10. The measured first natural
frequency changes from 1.660Hz to 11.6Hz by the variable bottom loads and the variable length of
hanging rope. In the case that the length of hanging rope is the shortest (l/lr=140), the measured first
natural frequency decreases from 11.6Hz to 10.6Hz; in the case the length of hanging rope is the
longest (l/lr=1.4), it increases from 1.660Hz to 1.807Hz as the bottom load increases (α2 increases
from 0 to 0.706). Thus the measured first natural frequency decreases as the length of hanging rope
increases or the ratio (l/lr) decrease in the case that the bottom load coefficient of the ratio α2 is
constant. It is shown that the results of the measured first natural frequency approach to the calculated
results.

it decreases from 28.25Hz to 18.80Hz as the bottom load increases (α2 increases from 0 to 0.706).

ratio (l/lr) decreases in the case the bottom load coefficient of the ratio α2 is constant.
Fig. 4-13 shows the corresponding experimental result of the Fig. 4-12. The measured second natural
frequency changes from 30.73Hz to 17.77Hz by the variable bottom load and the variable length of
hanging rope. In the case that the length of hanging rope is the shortest (l/lr=140), the measured
second natural frequency decreases from 30.73Hz to 21.80Hz; in the case that the length of hanging
rope is the longest (l/lr=1.4), it decreases from 28.47Hz to 17.77Hz as the bottom loads increases (α2
increases from 0 to 0.706). Thus the measured first natural frequencies decreases as the length of
hanging rope increases or the ratio (l/lr) decreases in the case the bottom load coefficient of the ratio
α2 is constant. It is shown that the results of the measured second natural frequency approach to the
calculated results.
4.3.2 Comparison between theoretical and experimental analysis
In order to investigate the tendency to approach to the simply support-free conditions for the large
value of α3, bottom load is changed using the ratio of lengths of the beam to the rope as 140. In these

cases the first natural frequency is examined theoretically and experimentally and found the good
agreement with simply support-free conditions as the value of Eq. (4-60) approaches to the value of Eq.
(4-67).
Table4-4 shows the results of calculation and measurement of simply support-free condition. Here,
ƒ1-sc, ƒ2-sc, ƒ3-sc means the calculated natural frequencies as the plate thickness is 1mm, 2mm and 3mm
under simply support-free conditions, respectively. ƒ1-sm, ƒ2-sm and ƒ3-sm are the measured natural
frequencies. And the comparisons were done between the results of the calculation and measurement of
simply support-free condition and the results of the calculated and measured first natural frequencies in
the case the hanging rope length is shortest (lr=5mm) in order to verify the theoretical analysis that the
vibration would tend to the vibration of the hinged-free condition.

In order to verify the tendency approaching to the hinged-free boundary conditions as the hanging
rope tends to zero, calculations of the first natural frequencies in the case the shortest rope (l/lr=140) by
our present analytical method (1st-Cal.) were compared with calculations by the standard analysis of
hinged-free boundary conditions (1st-Cal. by HFBC) as well as with the present experimental values
(1st-Exp.). Three cases of beam thickness are shown as a function of α2.
Firstly, the comparison about a beam of 1mm in thickness is shown in Fig.4-14. The measured first
natural frequencies decrease as α2 increases from 6.5Hz to 4.8Hz while the calculated values by the
present method decrease from 6.9Hz to 4.9Hz. The theoretical values of hinged-free boundary
conditions decrease from 7.3Hz to 4.9Hz as α2 increases. It is evident that the first natural frequency

agree quite well and they also agree well with the experimental values. The close proximity of the

present method to the calculation of hinged-free boundary conditions in the case the shortest rope is a
proof that the present analysis is correct in predicting that the vibration of a hung beam tends to the
vibration of the hinged-free boundary conditions when the hanging rope length approaches to zero.
The degree of the agreement was improved by the increase of α2. The reason is as α2 increase α3 also
increases, and the increase in α3 amplifies the hinged-free characteristics of the dynamic system.
Next, Fig.4-15 shows the comparison of the calculations of the first natural frequencies by the present
method and the theoretical values of the hinged-free boundary conditions as well as theexperimental
values of a beam of 2mm in thickness. We can easily understand that there is a good agreement
between the calculations by the present method and the measurements. The measured first natural
frequencies decrease as α2 increases from 10.1Hz to 8.1Hz, while the calculated values by the present
method decrease from 10.6Hz to 8.4Hz.
The theoretical value of hinged-free boundary conditions, however, showed some discrepancies with
the present method and the measurements. The degree of agreements was improved as α2 increases
since α3 also increases as α2 increases.
Finally, Fig.4-16 shows the comparison about a beam of 3mm in thickness. There was a good
agreement, too, between the proposed analysis and the measurements. The measured first natural
frequency decreases as α2 increases from 11.6Hz to 10.6Hz while the calculated values by the present
method decrease from 11.8Hz to 10.8Hz. The corresponding theoretical values of the hinged-free
boundary conditions were much more different from others. The error was caused by the reduction of
α3 due to the increase of the beam thickness. As α3 decreases, proximity of the present method to
hinged-free boundary conditions is diminished.
In fig.4-14, 15 and 16, one noticed is that the measured first natural frequencies would tend to the
calculated and measured results of the simply support-free condition as the bottom loads orα3 increase.
Thus we can say the vibration tend to vibrated basing on the simply support-free condition asα3 is very
large.
Furthermore, in order to verify the tendency of very long hanging rope, another comparison of

natural frequencies between the calculations and the measurements has been carried out.
The table4-5 shows the results of calculation and measurement of free-free condition. Here, ƒ1-fc, ƒ2-fc,
ƒ3-fc means the calculated natural frequencies as the plate thickness is 1mm, 2mm and 3mm under
free-free conditions, respectively. And the comparisons were done between the results of the
calculation of free-free condition and the results of the calculated and measured second natural
frequencies in the case the hanging rope length is longest(lr=500mm) in order to verify the theoretical
analysis that the vibration would tend to the vibration of the free-free condition.

Let us look at the case that l/lr=1.4.
As shown in Fig.4-2, 6, 10 and 4-3, 7, 11, the first natural frequencies tend to zero as l/lr approaches
to zero or the rope length approaches to infinity. Then we compared the second natural frequencies
measured (2nd-Exp.) and calculated (2nd-Cal.) by the present method with theoretical values under
free-free boundary conditions (1st-Cal. by FFBC).
Three kinds of beam thickness were employed as was mentioned previously. The measured and
calculated second natural frequencies were plotted against α2.
Firstly, the comparison about a beam of 1mm in the thickness is shown in Fig.4-17. Those
frequencies decrease as α2 increases. It is evident that that the second natural frequencies calculated
by the present method agree quite well with the theoretical values under free-free boundary conditions.
Also considerably good agreements were obtained between the calculations and the measurements.
Next, the measured and calculated second natural frequencies of the beam 2mm in thickness are
shown in Fig.4-18 as functions of α2. The calculations by the present method agree quite well with
theoretical values under free-free boundary conditions as well as the measurements.
Finally, the case of beam 3mm in thickness is shown in Fig.4-19. Also the calculations by the present

method agreed considerably with the theoretical values under the free-free boundary conditions.
Those results are considered a proof that the present analysis is correct in saying that the vibration of a
hung beam tends to the vibration of the free-free boundary conditions when the hanging rope length
approaches to infinity.
The general trends in the frequencies of the three kinds of beam were similar. The measured second
natural frequency of the beam 1mm in thickness decreases from 7.6Hz to 5.8Hz as α2 increase from 0
to 2.09 which corresponded to the bottom mass of 0 and 245g. Corresponding calculated values were
8.5Hz and 6.0Hz. In the case 2mm thickness, measured frequencies decrease from 18.3Hz to 11.4Hz
as α2 increases from 0 to 1.03, which corresponded to the same bottom masses as the previous case.
Corresponding calculated values were 18.2Hz to 11.8Hz.
Furthermore, in the case 3mm thickness, measurements of frequency were shifted from 28.5Hz to
17.8Hz as α2 increases from 0 to 0.71 which also corresponded to the same bottom masses.
Corresponding calculated values were 28.3Hz to 18.8Hz. So it may be stated that generally a good
agreement was obtained between the measurements and the calculations by the present method. Also
the calculations of the second natural frequency by the present method tends to the theoretical values
obtained under free-free boundary conditions as the rope length approaches to infinity.
4.4. Conclusion
A theoretical analysis model of a soil improvement machine (vibroflot) was performed in
consideration of the influence of the hanging rope length and the bottom mass, and the analytical
results gave a considerable agreement with the experimental results. It turns out that the hanging rope
length and the bottom load influence the natural frequency of the vibroflot hung and used with a crane.
The influence of the hanging rope length and the bottom mass are as follows.
1) First and second natural frequencies decrease as the length of hanging rope increases.
2) When the hanging rope is comparatively short, the first natural frequency of a vibroflot decreases
as the bottom load increases. When the hanging rope is comparatively long, however, it increases with
the bottom mass. On the other hand, the second natural frequency decreases as the bottom load

increases.
3) The first natural frequency of a vibroflot tends to 0, if the hanging rope length becomes very long
or α3 becomes very small. In that case, vibrational behaviour becomes similar to vibration under
free-free boundary conditions.
4) The first natural vibration of a vibroflot becomes similar to a vibration of simply support-free
boundary conditions, if the hanging rope length is very short or α3 is very large.
It has been shown for the calculation of the natural frequency of a vibroflot that combined effect of
the hinged-free and free-free boundary conditions should be counted for. It may be stated that the
conventional assumption of rigid-free conditions that is often used in practice is not appropriate
method.
Following the above conclusion, the theoretical analysis was verified by the experiments using a
rectangular working model. Thus the theoretical analysis model is a success model that can be used for
the vibroflot designing.

Analysis and Experiment of Forced Vibration
(Based on a Cylindrical Working Model)
5.1. Introduction
The theoretical analysis model of free lateral vibration has been proposed and experimentally
verified based on the rectangular working model in chapter 4. Furthermore, in order to explain the
forced lateral vibration, another theoretical and experimentally verification are necessary.
The larger influentce coefficient of the hanging rope or wire length can be easily obtained by the
rectangular working model. It is experimentally verified again in view of the present theoretical
analysis. The beam of the rectangular working model is different from the beam of the practical
vibroflot. A new cylindrical working model (introduced in chapter 2) that simulates a practical
vibroflot is designed and manufactured. The input power of the cylindrical working model is provided
by a turning eccentricity rotor, which is attached to the bottom of the cylindrical beam. The
eccentricity rotor is turned by an electice motor which is attached to the top of the cylindrical beam
through a central axis linking the electice motor and the eccentricity rotor. ThEq.estion of a provided
external force in the cylindrical working model can be solved by the turned eccentricity rotor, and the
information of a practical vibroflot also can be expected from this working model.
In this chapter, the natural frequency of the cylindrical working model has been measured in order to
verify the theoretical analysis that was introduced in chapter 4. The theoretical and experimental
analysis of the forced vibration is explained based on the cylindrical working model in this chapter.
5.2. Analytical method
To a vibrational machine, the vibrational information, such as the natural frequency of the free
vibration and the amplitude of a steady forced vibration of a beam, are fundamental in the process of
designing and manufacturing a vibroflot. Thus its theoretical analysis and the experimental
measurements have been carried out.
5.2.1. Normal Forced Vibration

The lateral vibration of the working vibroflot is a steady forced vibration [Ref.1-8]. It is assumed that
an external force F0sinw0t is driven by the eccentricity rotor (eccentricity load m2) at the bottom of the

5.3. Results and Discussion
A cylindrical beam (E=2.1×1011Pa, ρ=7.85×103kg/m3) of 750mm in length was used for the
experiment. The parameters of changing bottom load and length of hanging wire is shown in 5-1. The
parameter α3 is changed with the changes of length of hanging wire. Wire length is mentioned after the
“_” sign of the subscript values in mm.
The motor mass coefficient of the ratio α1 is 0.710 and kept constant. The eccentric load coefficient of
the ratio α2 was varied from 0.768 to 1.033. The influence coefficients of the wire length α3 are
variable in a range form 0.0096 to 0.2652, increasing as the eccentricity rotor mass increases; and
decreasing as the wire length increases. It should be noticed that the values of measurement as the
eccentric load coefficient of the ratio α2=0.768 were set as background in the measurement of the

forced vibration in order to decreases the experimental error. The real values should be obtained by
subtracting the values of the background from the measured values

5.3.1. Free Vibration
In the past, using the rectangular steel plate working model, a comparison (see Ref.6, 7, 8) had been
done between the first natural frequencies of measurement and the calculated results of the simply
support-free boundary condition in the case the shortest hanging wire length. Also the second natural
frequencies of measurement had been compared with the results of the free-free boundary condition’s
calculation in the case the longest hanging wire length. The comparisons have confirmed the present
theoretical analysis that the lateral vibration consists of the vibration of free-free and hinged-free
boundary condition; and are influenced by those conditions. The degree of influence is determined by
the length of the hanging wire. As the length of the hanging rope is very short or α3→∞, the vibration
tends to hinged-free boundary condition. On the other hand, as the length of the hanging rope is very
long or α3→0 the vibrational behaviour becomes similar to free-free boundary condition. In the
research of this chapter, the variable range of parameter α3 is small, thus the above mentioned
comparisons are omitted, and conclusions are directly quoted here. The results of theoretical and
experimental analysis of the cylindrical working model are shown in the following 3D-diagrams.
Fig. 5-2 shows the calculated results of the first natural frequencies of the cylindrical beam as a

function of hanging wire length and the loads of eccentricity rotor. In the figures, the ratio of length of
the cylindrical beam (l) and the hanging wire (lw) is used instead of the influence coefficient of the
wire length α3 in order to clearly describe the change of the results. The calculated first natural
frequencies decreases as the length of hanging wire increases or the ratio (l/lw) decreases when the
eccentric load coefficient of the ratio α2 is constant. On the other hand for constant value of the length
of hanging wire or the ratio (l/lw), the calculated first natural frequency decreases as the eccentricity
rotor load increases.
Fig. 5-3 shows the corresponding experimental result of the Fig. 5-2. The measured first natural
frequency changes from 1.221Hz to 6.226Hz by the variable eccentricity rotor load and the variable
length of hanging wire. In the case the shortest (l/lw=37.5) length of hanging wire, the measured first
natural frequency increases from 5.615Hz to 6.226Hz; on the other hand, in the case the
longest(l/lw=1.5) length of hanging wire, it increases from 1.221Hz to 1.709Hz as the eccentricity
rotor load increases (α2 increases from 0.768 to 1.033). Thus the measured first natural frequency
decreases as the length of hanging wire increases or the ratio (l/lw) decreases in the case the eccentric
load coefficient of the ratio α2 become constant. It is shown that the results of the measured first
natural frequency approaches to the calculated results.
As was in [Ref.6, 7] that the first natural frequency decreases as the mass of the eccentricity rotor
increases in the case the comparatively short hanging wire or comparatively large α3. In the experiment,
the first natural frequency increases with the increasing mass of the eccentricity rotor as shown in
Fig.5-3.
Similarly, Fig.5-4 shows the theoretical values of second natural frequency as a function of hanging
wire length and the load of eccentricity rotor. The theoretical second natural frequency changes from
123.872Hz to 126.272Hz by the variable eccentricity rotor load and the variable length of hanging wire.
In the case the shortest (l/lw=37.5) length of hanging wire, the theoretical second natural frequency
decreases from 126.272Hz to 123.876Hz. On the other hand, it decreases from 122.268Hz to
123.872Hz in the case the longest (l/lw=1.5) length of hanging wire as the eccentricity rotor load

increases (α2 increases from 0.768 to 1.033). Thus the theoretical second natural frequency decreases
as the length of hanging wire increases or the ratio (l/lw) decreases in the case that the eccentric load
coefficient of the ratio α2 is constant. In this case, the change in the theoretical second natural
frequency is so small that it should not be counted in the experiment.
Fig.5-5 shows the corresponding experimental result of the Fig.5-4. The measured second natural
frequency decreases from 126.22Hz to 123.78Hz as the mass of the eccentricity rotor increases (α2
increases from 0.768 to 1.033) or the length of the hanging wire become constant.
From the above theoretical and experimental results of the first and second natural frequencies, it is
found that a good agreement is obtained between theoretical and experimental values either using the
rectangular steel plate working model (Ref. Ref.6, 7, 8) or using the cylindrical beam working model in
the present analysis. Thus the present theoretical analysis is experimentally verified to apply to the
designing calculation of a vibroflot.
5.3.2. Results of the forced vibration
A). Results of the different eccentricity rotor masses
1) The hanging wire length lw=20mm
Fig. 5-6 shows the calculated moment of forces of the cylindrical beam, as a function of the mass of
the eccentricity rotor at different measuring points in the case the hanging wire length 20mm. at each
measuring point, the calculated moment of force increases as the mass of the eccentricity rotor

increases. At a constant mass of the eccentricity rotor or the ratio α2, the distribution curve of the
calculated moment of force is parabolic, and it’s the maximum value point occurred at 7th (0.6l).
Fig.5-7 shows the measured moment of forces corresponding to Fig.5-6. The maximum value point
occurred at 6th (0.5l), and the measured moment of force increases from 1.868Nm to 10.981Nm as the
mass of the eccentricity rotor increases (α2 increases from 0.813 to 1.033). At a constant mass of the
eccentricity rotor or the ratio α2, the distribution curve of the measured moment of forces is also nearly
parabolic. Thus from the results of calculation and measurement, a good agreement is obtained
between theoretical and experimental values for the variable mass of the eccentricity rotor.
Also the corresponding calculated amplitude of the lateral vibration of Fig.5-6 is shown in Fig.5-8.
The calculated amplitude increases from –1.185mm to 6.677mm for α2=1.033; and increases from
–0.223mm to 1.260mm for α2=0.813. Those results show that the absolute value of the amplitude
increases as the mass of the eccentricity rotor increases. It is found that a good agreement is obtained
between theoretical and experimental values.
2) The hanging wire length lw=100mm
Fig. 5-9 shows the calculated moment of forces of the cylindrical beam, as a function of the mass of
the eccentricity rotor at different measuring points in the case the hanging wire length 100mm. At each
measuring point, the calculated moment of force increases as the mass of the eccentricity rotor
increases. At a constant mass of the eccentricity rotor or the ratio α2, the distribution curve of the
calculated moment of force is parabolic, and it’s the maximum value point occurred at 7th (0.6l).
Fig.5-10 shows the measured moment of forces corresponding to Fig.5-9. The maximum value point
occurred at 6th (0.5l), and the measured moment of force increases from 2.290Nm to 11.735Nm as the
mass of the eccentricity rotor increases (α2 increases from 0.813 to 1.033). At a constant mass of the
eccentricity rotor or the ratio α2, the distribution curve of the measured moment of force is also nearly
parabolic. Thus from the results of calculation and measurement, a good agreement is obtained
between theoretical and experimental values for the variable mass of the eccentricity rotor.

The calculated amplitude increases from –1.338mm to 6.650mm for α2=1.033; and increases from
–0.215mm to 1.258mm for α2=0.813. Those results show that the absolute value of the amplitude
increases as the mass of the eccentricity rotor increases. It is found that a good agreement is obtained
between theoretical and experimental values.
3) The hanging wire length lw=250mm
Fig. 5-12 shows the calculated moment of force of the cylindrical beam, as a function of the mass of
the eccentricity rotor at different measuring points in the case the hanging wire length 250mm. At each
measuring point, the calculated moment of force increases as the mass of the eccentricity rotor
increases. At a constant mass of the eccentricity rotor or the ratio α2, the distribution curve of the
calculated moment of force is parabolic, and it’s the maximum value point occurred at 7th (0.6l).
Fig.5-13 shows the measured moment of forces corresponding to Fig.5-12. The maximum value point
occurred at 6th (0.5l), and the measured moment of force increases from 2.131Nm to 11.637Nm as the
mass of the eccentricity rotor increases (α2 increases from 0.813 to 1.033). At a constant mass of the
eccentricity rotor or the ratio α2, the distribution curve of the measured moment of forces is also nearly
parabolic. Thus from the results of calculation and measurement, a good agreement is obtained
between theoretical and experimental values for the variable mass of the eccentricity rotor.
Also the corresponding calculated amplitude of the lateral vibration of Fig.5-12 is shown in Fig.5-14.
The calculated amplitude increases from –1.332mm to 6.646mm for α2=1.033; and increases from
–0.223mm to 1.257mm for α2=0.813. Those results show that the absolute value of the amplitude
increases as the mass of the eccentricity rotor increases. It is found that a good agreement is obtained
between theoretical and experimental values.
4) The hanging wire length lw=500mm
Fig. 5-15 shows the calculated moment of force of the cylindrical beam, as a function of the mass of
the eccentricity rotor at different measuring points in the case the hanging wire length 20mm. At each
measuring point, the calculated moment of force increases as the mass of the eccentricity rotor

increases. At a constant mass of the eccentricity rotor or the ratio α2, the distribution curve of the
calculated moment of force is parabolic, and it’s the maximum value point occurred at 7th (0.6l).
Fig.5-16 shows the measured moment of force corresponding to Fig.5-15. The maximum value point
occurred at 6th (0.5l), and the measured moment of force increases from 2.945Nm to 12.292Nm as the
mass of the eccentricity rotor increases (α2 increases from 0.813 to 1.033). At a constant mass of the
eccentricity rotor or the ratio α2, the distribution curve of the measured moment of forces is also nearly
parabolic. Thus from the results of calculation and measurement, a good agreement is obtained
between theoretical and experimental values for the variable mass of the eccentricity rotor.
Also the corresponding calculated amplitude of the lateral vibration of Fig.5-15 is shown in Fig.5-17.
The calculated amplitude increases from –1.330mm to 6.645mm for α2=1.033; and increases from
–0.214mm to 1.257mm for α2=0.813. Those results show that the absolute value of the amplitude
increases as the mass of the eccentricity rotor increases. It is found that a good agreement is obtained
between theoretical and experimental values.
B). Results of the different hanging wire length
1) α2=0.813
Fig.5-18 shows the calculated moment of force of the cylindrical beam, as a function of the hanging
wire length at different measuring points in the case the mass of the eccentricity rotor α2=0.813. At
each measuring point, the calculated moment of force decreases as the length of hanging wire increases.
In the case that the hanging wire length is constant, the distribution curve of the calculated moment of
force is parabolic, which the max value point occurred 7th (0.6l).
Fig.5-19 shows the measured moment of force corresponding to Fig.5-18. The max value point
occurred at 6th (0.5l), and the measured moment of force increases from 1.868Nm to 2.294Nm as the
length of hanging wire increases. In the case that the hanging wire length is constant, the distribution
curve of the measured moment of force is also nearly parabolic.
Also the corresponding calculated amplitude of the lateral vibration of Fig.5-18 is shown in Fig.5-20.
The calculated amplitude increases from –1.330mm to 6.645mm for l/lw=1.5; and increases from

–0.214mm to 1.257mm for l/lw=37.5. Those results show that the absolute value of the amplitude
decreases as the hanging wire length increases in the measuring point 1~2(0~0.1l) and 9~11(0.8l~l);
and the absolute value of the amplitude increases as the hanging wire length increases in the measuring

2) α2=0.857
Fig.5-21 shows the calculated moment of force of the cylindrical beam, as a function of the hanging

each measuring point, the calculated moment of force decreases as the length of hanging wire increases.
In the case that the hanging wire length is constant, the distribution curve of the calculated moment of
force was parabolic, which the max value point occurred 7th (0.6l).
Fig.5-22 shows the measured moment of force corresponding to Fig.5-21. The max value point
occurred at 6th (0.5l), and the measured moment of force increases from 3.737Nm to 4.425Nm as the
length of hanging wire increases. In the case that the hanging wire length is constant, the distribution
curve of the measured moment of force is also nearly parabolic.
Also the corresponding calculated amplitude of the lateral vibration of Fig.5-21 is shown in Fig.5-23.
The calculated amplitude increases from –0.416mm to 2.448mm for l/lw=1.5; and increases from
–0.434mm to 2.455mm for l/lw=37.5. Those results show that the absolute value of the amplitude
decreases as the hanging wire length increases in the measuring point 1~2(0~0.1l) and 9~11(0.8l~l);
and the absolute value of the amplitude increases as the hanging wire length increases in the measuring
point 3~8(0.2l~0.7l). It was found that a good agreement is obtained between theoretical and
experimental values.
3) α2=0.901
Fig.5-24 shows the calculated moment of force of the cylindrical beam, as a function of the hanging
wire length at different measuring points in the case the mass of the eccentricity rotor α2=0.901. At
each measuring point, the calculated moment of force decreases as the length of hanging wire increases

decreases as the hanging wire length increases in the measuring point 1~2(0~0.1l) and 9~11(0.8l~l);
and the absolute value of the amplitude increases as the hanging wire length increases in the measuring
point 3~8(0.2l~0.7l). It was found that a good agreement is obtained bettwen theoretical and
experimental values.
4) α2=0.945
Fig.5-27 shows the calculated moment of force of the cylindrical beam, as a function of the hanging
wire length at different measuring points in the case the mass of the eccentricity rotor α2=0.945. At
each measuring point, the calculated moment of force decreases as the length of hanging wire increases.
In the case that the hanging wire length is constant, the distribution curve of the calculated moment of
force was parabolic, which the max value point occurred 7th (0.6l).
Fig.5-28 shows the measured moment of force corresponding to Fig.5-27. The max value point
occurred at 6th (0.5l), and the measured moment of force increases from 7.867Nm to 8.369Nm as the
length of hanging wire increases. In the case that the hanging wire length is constant, the distribution
curve of the measured moment of force is also nearly parabolic.
Also the corresponding calculated amplitude of the lateral vibration of Fig.5-27 is shown in Fig.5-29.
The calculated amplitude increases from –0.791mm to 4.652mm for l/lw=1.5; and increases from
–0.827mm to 4.670mm for l/lw=37.5. Those results show that the absolute value of the amplitude

Fig.5-34 shows the measured moment of force corresponding to Fig.5-33. The max value point
occurred at 6th (0.5l), and the measured moment of force increases from 10.981Nm to 12.292Nm as the
length of hanging wire increases. In the case that the hanging wire length is constant, the distribution
curve of the measured moment of force is also nearly parabolic.
Also the corresponding calculated amplitude of the lateral vibration of Fig.5-33 is shown in Fig.5-35.
The calculated amplitude increases from –1.185mm to 6.645mm for l/lw=1.5; and increases from
–1.185mm to 6.677mm for l/lw=37.5. Those results show that the absolute value of the amplitude
decreases as the hanging wire length increases in the measuring point 1~2(0~0.1l) and 7~11(0.6l~l);
and the absolute value of the amplitude increases as the hanging wire length increases in the measuring
point 3~8(0.2l~0.5l). It was found that a good agreement is obtained between theoretical and
experimental values.
It should be pointed on that in Fig. 5-6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, and 33, the value of theoretical
calculation at the measuring point 1(the nearest to the motor) should be 0, however in Fig.5-7, 10, 13,
16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31 and 34, the corresponding experiential values are not 0. It increases as the bottom
load increases. This phenomenon might be related to the way of choosing the coordinate origin. In the
present analysis, the origin of the coordinate was chosen at the top of cylindrical beam and the inertia
force of the motor was supposed to act on the origin. In fact, the force acted on the center of mass of
the motor. There is a distance between the center of the mass of the motor and the chosen origin of the
coordinates. Thus the moment of force was not 0 but increases as the bottom load increases. This
difference between the center of the mass of the motor and the chosen the origin of coordinates also
resulted in shifting the point of the maximum moment of force from 7th point of theoretical calculation
to 6th point of experimental value.
Seeing Fig.5-8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26, 29, 32 and 35, the measuring amplitude at point 1,2 and at point
3~11 are opposite. It means that there is a point between the measuring point 2 and 3 and where no
vibration takes place. This point is corresponded to a node of the vibration.

5.4. Observation of forced vibration with a high speed video camera
The motion of the forced vibration was observed by a high speed video camera as the hanging wire
length and the load of the eccentricity rotor were changed. As an example, the photos of α2=0.786 and
α2=0.813 are shown in Fig.5-36 in the case the hanging wire length is 100mm (lw=100mm).
The photos show that the amplitude increases as the eccentricity rotor load increases and the angle
bettwen the hanging wire and the vertical line also increases for a fixed hanging wire length.
Fig.5-37 and 38 also show that the amplitude and the angle between the hanging wire and the
vertical line increases as the eccentricity rotor load increases for the fixed hanging wire length. And
the angle between the hanging wire and the vertical line decreases as the hanging wire length
increases for the fixed eccentricity rotor load.

5.5. Conclusions
An analysis of a soil improvement machine (vibroflot) was performed based on a cylindrical working
model. The natural frequencies were influenced by the parameters such as the length of the hanging
wire, the weight of the eccentricity rotor, and the weight of a motor, the cylindrical beam length, and a
cylindrical cross-sectional area. In the experiment, the influence of the hanging rope length and the
bottom mass were considered and the analytical results gave a considerable agreement with the
experiment results.
It turns out that hanging wire length and the weight of the eccentricity rotor influence the natural
frequencies, the moment of forces and the amplitudes of the vibroflot hung and used with a crane. The

influences are as follows:
1) First and second nature frequencies are decreases as the length of hanging wire is increases.
2) When the hanging rope is comparatively short, the first natural frequency of a vibroflot decreases
as the bottom load increases. When the hanging rope or wire is comparatively long, however, it
increases with the bottom mass. On the other hand, the second natural frequency decreases as the
bottom load increases.
3) The calculated and measured moment of forces increases as the mass of the eccentricity rotor
increases. In the amplitudes also increases as the mass of the eccentricity rotor increases.
4) The calculated and measured moment of forces increases as the length of hanging wire increases.
The middle parts of the cylindrical beam, the amplitudes increases as the length of hanging wire
increases; the others parts, the absolute values of the amplitude the amplitudes decreases as the
length of hanging wire increases
Following the above conclusions, the theoretical analysis was verified by the experiments using a
cylindrical working model, thus the theoretical analysis model is also a success model that can be
used to the calculation of the vibroflot designing.
Either using the rectangular steel plate working model [Ref.6, 7] in the past or using the cylindrical
beam working model in the present experiment, same theoretical analysis of a vibroflot can be applied
considering the influence of the hanging wire length and the mass of the eccentricity rotor, and the
analytical results gave a considerable agreement with the experimental results for free vibration. And
the analytical results also gave a considerable agreement with the experiment results for the normal
forced vibration. Thus the theoretical analysis can be used in the designing calculation of the
vibroflot.

Conclusions
The main purpose of this research is to develop a theoretical calculation model and to experimentally
verify the theoretical calculation model. The theoretical calculation model can be applied to a
vibroflot designing. Also the effects of the parameter have been investigated in this research.
6.1. Conclusions
An analysis of a soil improvement machine (vibroflot) has been performed based on a rectangular
working model and a cylindrical working model. The natural frequencies were influenced by the
parameters such as the length of the hanging wire, the weight of the eccentricity rotor, and the weight
of a motor, the cylindrical beam length, and a cylindrical cross-sectional area in the free vibration. In
the experiment of the free vibration, the influences of the hanging rope length and the bottom mass
have been considered and the analytical results have given a considerable agreement with the
experiment results.
It turns out that hanging rope or wire length and the bottom load influence the natural frequency of
the vibroflot hung and used with a crane. The influence is as follows:
1) The first and the second natural frequencies decrease as the length of hanging rope or wire
increases.
2) When the hanging rope or wire is comparatively short, the first natural frequency of a vibroflot
decreases as the bottom load increases. When the hanging rope or wire is comparatively long,
however, it increases with the bottom mass. On the other hand, the second natural frequency
decreases as the bottom load increases.
And in the free vibration, the first natural frequencies in the case the shortest hanging rope or wire
have been compared with the calculation of the hinged-free boundary condition, and the second
natural frequencies in the case longest hanging rope or wire were compared with the calculations of
the free-free boundary condition. The results of the comparisons are as follows:

3) The first natural vibration of a vibroflot becomes similar to a vibration of hinged-free conditions,
if the hanging rope or wire length is very short or α3 is very large.
4) The first natural frequency of a vibroflot tends to 0, if the hanging rope or wire length becomes
very long or α3 becomes very small. In that case, vibrational behaviour becomes similar to
vibration under free-free conditions.
It has been shown in order to calculate the natural frequency of a vibroflot that combined effect of
the hinged-free and free-free boundary conditions should be counted for.
Using the cylindrical working model, an forced vibration analysis of a soil improvement machine
(vibroflot) have been also performed in consideration of the influence of the hanging wire length and
the weight of the eccentricity rotor, and the analytical results gave a considerable agreement with the
experimental results. It turns out that hanging wire length and the eccentricity rotor weight influence
the moment of forces and the amplitude of the vibroflot in the forced vibration. The influences are as
follows
5) The calculated and measured moment of forces of force increase as the mass of the eccentricity
rotor increases. The amplitude of the displacement also increases as the mass of the eccentricity
rotor increases.
6) The calculated and measured moment of forces increase as the length of hanging wire increases.
The middle part of the cylindrical beam, the amplitude increases as the length of hanging wire
increases; near the both ends, the absolute values of the amplitude the amplitude decreases as the
length of hanging wire increases
Following the above conclusion, either using the rectangular steel plate working model or using the
cylindrical beam working model, same theoretical analysis of a vibroflot can be applied considering of
the influence of the hanging wire length and the mass of the eccentricity rotor, and the analytical results
gave a considerable agreement with the experimental results for free vibration. And the analytical
results also gave a considerable agreement with the experimental results for the normal forced
vibration. Thus the theoretical analysis can be used in the designing calculation of the Vibro-flot.

Although the cross-sectional form of the beams are different in the two working model, the boundary
conditions have been set up in same way and a simular conclusion were obtained. Thus it may be
stated that the present theoretical analysis has a certain similarity that is enough to analyze the
vibration of a homogeneous hanging beam with same area of cross-section.
6.2 The work in future
Firstly, using the rectangular working model of a vibroflot, the influences of the bottom loads, the
length of hanging rope, and the thickness of the beam have been studied, while the influences of the
upper mass and the length of the beam, however, are not studied, yet. This is a work in the future.
Secondly, using the cylindrical working model of a vibroflot, the influences of the weight of the
eccentricity rotor and the length of hanging wire have been studied; while the influents of the motor
and the length of the beam and the cylindrical area of cross-section, however, are not studied, yet. This
is another work in the future.
Thirdly, using the cylindrical working model of a vibroflot, although the theoretical analysis and
experiment of the forced vibration have been done in the case the different hanging wire length and the
weight of the eccentricity rotor, the influences of the motor and the length of the beam and the
cylindrical area of cross-section, however, are not studied, yet. This is the third work in the future.
Although remaining three works will be studied in order to complete the present theoretical model in
the future, which is not enough. We know the working vibroflot always bring a question of noise. How
to decreases the noise is another work in the future.
