STUDY ON LOCAL VALUES IN SENDANGSONO SANCTUARY, YOGYAKARTA, INDONESIA

ABSTRACT

Mangun Wijaya is one of Indonesian architect and we may say he was worldwide architect. His

strong social vision is reflected from many designs that he had design. A deep understanding of

space and form, dominates his work. Sendangsono Sanctuary was one of Mangun wijayas Project.

Sendangsono Sanctuary was church the place for worship among Christian religion, Indonesias

Laurdes the peoples says about this place, located in the hillside than the existing site was contoured

ground. The exciting case was how the way Mangunwijaya organized the contoured site, and he

used the local material in designing Sendangsono Sanctuary. This place became pilgrims destination

for local people. The peak season is in May and October every year. In addition to praying, the

pilgrims take water from the source. After he died in 1999, local community and the foundation add

some part to this sanctuary.

This paper will discuss about the basic theory of timber material installation with Vernacular

Indonesias building, also discuss about the architecture value of Y.B Mangun wijaya and analyze

Sendangsono Sanctuary design. The explanation will be described how deep the using of timber

material applied on the building, construction detail and exploring the value behind it. The interview

will be asked to people around, the foundations and many architects who study about

Mangunwijaya design. Another analysis of data is developing by capturing the real building on the

spot. The collected data will be discussed in the dialogue which supported with theory about design

of Mangunwijaya. The paper will also discussed about how the next design by people can side beside

with first design.

Finally, this paper will describe about the value on vernacular design in Sendangsono Sanctuary and

surroundings. This paper can also describe the social values the cultural tradition that reflection in its

construction. The conclusion is expected can enhance our perception to the local values in the

process of design.
