Recruitment QuestionsQ2.1.1 Indicate how you will identify and recruit participants for your research, referencing any relevant sections of your Project Description/Protocol as appropriate.Recruitment of 30 teachers and 30 students will be based upon purposive sampling. Advertisements will be placed in ACAP student lounges (both online and on campus), educator rooms, staff kitchens and on a dedicated Facebook website. All advertisements will include the participation criteria which are: For educators: Educators need to be currently employed and teaching either on campus or in blended classes at ACAP in any discipline and on any of the campuses. They need to be prepared to talk about how they manage diversity in the classroom and their attitude towards cultural competence as an academic teacher. For students: Students must be currently studying on any of the campuses and in any of the disciplines. They need to be prepared to talk about their experiences or perspectives of how diversity is handled in ACAP classrooms. Participants who meet the inclusion criteria and are interested in taking part in the project will be invited to email the Chief Investigator using an ACAP email address. The Chief Investigator will then provide the potential participant with an information package which will include a Research Participant Information Statement as well as Consent and Withdrawal of Consent Forms. If the potential participant indicates their agreement to take part in the study after having read these documents, an individual interview or focus group time will be arranged. Prior to taking part in an interview, whether individual or in a focus group, it will be necessary for all participants to sign their informed consent. The researchers will not interview either students or educators with whom they have had, or have, a professional, social or familial relationship. Transcribers will be employed but will first have to sign confidentiality agreements.

Q2.1.2 How will your recruitment strategy take account of the ethical considerations relevant to the specific people you are recruiting? The main ethical considerations that are taken into account in the chosen recruitment strategy include: autonomy, anonymity, confidentiality, and justice. In regard to autonomy, potential participants will learn of the research via several avenues including posters on campus, posters on online student lounges and teacher forums, and the ACAP facebook page. If students and teachers are interested in participating, they, on their own initiative, are able to contact the Chief Investigator whose ACAP email address will be provided on the advertising material or they may follow a link which is also provided to a dedicated Facebook page which includes a Participant Information Sheet that outlines the study and what is involved. If they remain interested and meet the inclusion criteria, they can then contact the Chief Investigator by email. It is only once they have identified themselves and made their interest known to the research team that they will be invited to participate in the study. Participants will not be in any academic, working or social relationship with the researchers; participation is entirely voluntary and no pressure or manipulation will be used to encourage involvement. Participants will be made aware in the Participants Information Sheet and during focus groups and interviews that they can withdraw at any time up to two weeks after the receipt of their transcript without consequence. In regard to anonymity and confidentiality, the researcher will ensure that the interviews are conducted in a safe and confidential place, with no other parties privy to the discussion. The researcher will also not discuss one participant with another but keep each interview confidential. All of the data will be de-identified, summated and pseudonyms will be used. The data will be stored securely both during and after the project is completed. Finally, in regard to justice, the study employs purposive sampling meaning that participants are recruited in a strategic manner in order to provide data that is relevant to the research question. The advertisements will highlight the purpose of the research and will include the relevant and necessary inclusion criteria. Exclusion from participating will only be on the grounds that the defined and germane inclusion criteria are not met. The number of participants (30 teachers

and 30 students) has also been defined taking into account the time limits and feasibility of this study and once this number has been reached, recruitment will need to cease. Participants will have been well informed of the nature and expectations of the study, so will be able to determine the personal benefit and burden of their participation; they can disclose as much or as little information as they are inclined to do and are able to withdraw without consequence at any time up to 2 weeks after receipt of their transcript. They will also be provided with appropriate and relevant referrals for their ongoing support.

Consent Questions

Q2.2.1 Indicate by reference the relevant section/s of your Project Description/Protocol that address/es consent.Interested individuals are invited to email the Chief Investigator's ACAP email address to signal their interest in participation. Following this initial contact, they will receive by email a comprehensive information package. This package will include the inclusion criteria and provide evidence of ethical practice including anonymity, confidentiality, volunteerism and respect. It will make clear what involvement in the study entails. If the selection criteria are met and the potential participant remains interested, arrangements will be made for their participation in a small focus group of up to 6 people and/or an individual interview. Interviews and focus groups will be conducted on an ACAP campus or via Skype or Zoom. Before taking part in either the focus group or individual interviews, participants will have received, and have had the time to read, all the information pertinent to their involvement in the project. They will be offered the opportunity to have any further questions addressed by the researchers and prior to being interviewed, will indicate their consent to participate by signing a consent form. Individuals participating by Skype or Zoom will scan a copy of this form, or send a photo, to the researchers' ACAP email address. Once informed consent has been obtained, the interview or focus group can be conducted. Participants will be advised that they may choose not to participate at any time during the research process up until two weeks after receipt of their transcript and that there will be no adverse consequences attached to their withdrawal. The Research Particpant Information Sheet, the Consent Form and Withdrawal of Consent Form are provided as an appendix to this application.

Q2.2.2 Will you be obtaining consent from some or all participants to participate in the research?Yes for all participants

Q2.2.2.1 What is the scope of consent that you will be seeking? Specifico Extendedo Unspecified

Q3.7 Describe any ethical considerations relating to the source of information/data as indicated in the response to the previous question. No information about the participants will be gathered from medical/health/mental health records or from the records of a law inforcement agency. The participants will the source of the information supplied and data will be collected in semi structured interviews or focus groups. Important ethical considerations in regard to the participants, which have been factored into the research design include:

1. Participants will be recruited at arm's length. They will self select on the basis of inclusion criteria which are clearly laid out in the advertising and information-giving material

2. Participants must be over the age of 18 and able to give their informed consent3. No dual relationships will be permissable4. Comprehensive, honest information will be provided to participants5. Participants will choose what and how much to reveal of their experience and they can

withdraw at any point up until a week after the interview without giving a reason and without any consequence

6. Their anonymity and confidentiality will be upheld. Data will be de-identified and summated and kept securely until 5 years after the closure of the project when all material will be destroyed

7. Member checking will be undertaken to ensure the accuracy of the data used8. The participants will be informed prior to their participation about the dissemination of

the results of the study 9. All research projects carry some risk for the participants and though this is consdered a

low risk project, provision has been made to support the particpants should the need arise

Q3.8 Was the information/data that you are using previously collected for a purpose other than research? No

Activities Planned for/with Data

Q3.9 Do you plan to disclose any personal information/data in this project to a third party? No

Q3.10 How will you protect the privacy of participants and non-participants in any notes and/or publications arising from your research.Participants will speak about personal matters in the course of their individual interviews or focus group sessions. These sessions will be recorded with the prior knowledge and consent of the participants. The recordings will be transcribed, pseudonyms will be used and all the data will be de-identified. The participants will also be informed about the manner of dissemination of the data. Any presentation or journal article will be in de-identified and summated format so that it will not be possible to identify any individual. Member checking will also be used so that the data can be corrected by participants if they feel it necessary. Whilst the project is underway, all consent forms will be stored securely and separately from the recordings and transcripts so that individual identification is not possible. Password protected computers and

locked cabinets will be used by the researchers during the duration of the project and on completion, all material will be stored on a USB and handed in to ACAP for a mandatory storage period of 5 years. At this point, the researchers will shred all hard copy and erase all soft copy data from their computers. The ACAP Research Officer will undertake to store the USB securely in a locked cabinet and then to destroy it at the end of the 5 year period.

Q3.11 Are there any restrictions on your ability to assure the confidentiality of participants? No

Q3.12 Do you plan to share any individual research results obtained during this research to the participants?Yes

Q3.12.1 Describe any ethical considerations relating to the sharing of individual research results with the participants. To check the trustworthiness of the data and its analysis, the researchers will undertake the process of member checking. Participants will be emailed a copy of their typed interview or focus group transcript and asked to review it and to offer any requests for changes to be made within two weeks of receiving the transcript. This process is central to ensuring the research authentically reflects the experiences of the participants. Participants will have been informed that they are able to withdraw from the study before, during or after their interviews up until 2 weeks after receipt of their transcript. The transcripts, if accepted by the participants, will then undergo a process of open, axial and selective coding, so that once categorised and developed into themes, the data will be summated in addition to being de-identified. The participants, if they so desire, will receive a copy of the de-identified and summated report. In any presentation, written report or journal article that results from this project, the identitification of any individual will not be possible. The participants will have been informed of the process and procedure in regard to the sharing of results prior to giving consent to participate; anonymity and confidentiality will be upheld throughout the collection and analysis of the data as well as the dissemination of the results.

Q3.13 Describe how you will handle any secondary or incidental findings that arise from the analysis of personal information/data.The researchers will inform participants in the Participant Information Statement, and prior to them giving informed consent to participate in the research project, that any issue revealed requiring mandatory reporting will be acted upon by the Chief Investigator who will report it to the necessary authority as required by law.

Q3.14 Describe how the information/data will be stored, accessed, archived and/or destroyed. The interviews and focus groups will be recorded and then transcribed by either the researchers or an employed transcriber. The paid transcriber will have signed a confidentiality agreement before accessing recordings. For the duration of the project, the researchers (and transcribers if these are used) will keep all hard copy material such as the consent forms in locked facilities. The consent forms will be kept separately from the recordings so that the participants cannot be identified. All soft copy material such as the transcripts and data analysis will be stored on the researchers' (and transcribers') password protected computers. Once the research project has been completed, the researchers will transfer all material onto a labelled USB which will be handed to the Research Officer at ACAP for secure storage. The researchers will then shred

all the consent forms, destroy the recordings and delete any electronic data related to the study on their computers. At ACAP, the USB will be securely stored for 5 years as recommended by the NHMRC (2007) after which it will be destroyed by the Research Officer.

Q3.15 Describe any ethical considerations relating to the storage of, access to or destruction of information/data in this project. This project is committed to the ethical principles of nonmaleficence and respect for persons. The participants will have been promised anonymity and confidentiality and will have divulged sensitive information on this basis. Therefore, it is essential to make sure that for the duration of the project and in accordance with legal compliance, all research material is stored in a manner that guarantees wherever possible that participant anonymity and confidentiality is respectfully upheld so that no harm befalls any individual as a result of their participation in this project. Likewise, when the mandatory period of 5 years concludes, all material will be destroyed with the same level of security and intention to safeguard the interests and well being of the participants.

Q3.16 Will the outcomes of this project be disseminated to the participants?Yes

Q3.16.1.1 Describe how the outcomes of the project will be disseminated to the participants, or refer to the relevant section/s of your Project Description/Protocol which deals with this matter. Each participant will receive a transcript of their individual interview or that of the focus group they have attended in order to allow them to check and approve the accuracy of the data to be used for analysis. At any point until 2 weeks after receipt of their transcripts, participants are able to withdraw from the study without any reason or consequence. Participants will also be invited to receive a summated and de-identified final report of the study by email or by accessing the dedicated Facebook research page to which a copy will be posted by the Chief Investigator.

Q3.16.1.2 Describe any ethical considerations relating to any dissemination of outcomes to the participants. The ethical considerations described in Q3.15 apply to this question as well. The research design has considered the need to uphold confidentiality and anonymity, to support and maintain the wellbeing of its participants, as well as to treat their views, and their person, with due respect. As has been stated, all the research outcomes will be presented in de-identified and summated format and participants will have been informed before giving their consent about the manner in which the research outcomes will be disseminated. Additionally the ethical principle of autonomy has also been considered. All participants will receive the transcripts of their individual interviews or of their focus group session and have been informed that they are able to withdraw from the study without consequence up until 2 weeks after they have received these. In this way, the participant can determine whether they wish their contribution to be included in the analysis or not.

Q3.17 Describe any foreseeable future activities for which information/data collected and/or used in this project may be made available. As the researchers have won a research grant from the NPI Small Grants Scheme, it will be expected that de-identified and summated data will be used for reports to ACAP and Navitas management and staff. These reports will include both written and verbal presentations. It is hoped that a number of articles in peer reviewed journals will result as well as presentations at Navitas, academic and industry aligned conferences. Findings from the research will be used to inform professional development for academic teachers to promote equity and inclusion in

the classroom. In so doing it is hoped that the research will have a direct input on pedagogic practices within ACAP in relation to managing diversity in the classroom.

Q3.18 Describe any ethical considerations relating to the planned or possible future use of information/data in this project.Whilst the researchers have obligations to the providers of the research grant, the participants will have been informed without deception prior to giving their consent of the manner in which the research outcomes will be disseminated. The participants have been assured of confidentiality and anonymity through the de-identification and summation of data. They will have received a transcript of their contribution to the data and will be offered the right to withdraw up until the de-identified data is analysed and summated. They will receive a copy of a final report on which other written and oral presentations will be based.
