Studio TILT has gained an international reputation as leaders in codesign methodology, engaging users in the design and making of their spaces. The vision for Studio TILT is to demystify architecture and design by delivering effective spaces, products and services that better complement the purpose and personality of the people that use them.

The codesign concept challenges the perceived needs for a space by formulating a workshop approach that brings people together for interaction and cross-pollination of ideas. Collaborating with the end-users at the beginning of the process ensures that on a practical level, the space is fit for purpose from all perspectives but also creates a cultural relationship by providing a sense of ownership which ultimately leads to better design, cost effective ideas and a more flexible space.

The Studio’s design team is active at all stages of the process, from the initial briefing to making the space. This codesign process encourages people to explore the role of objects, furniture and design in the space and its impact on their own culture and behaviour. Activity-based workshops combine elements including qualitative and quantitative research, prototyping, blueprinting, collective learning and crowd-sourced design solutions. The process brings people together to interact and share ideas; challenging perceived needs and uncovering what is really required for a space, creating a people centred approach to design..

For Studio TILT there are a series of fundamental assumptions that are challenged through the codesign process. This expression of creativity is dependent on so many more things than great ideas, or if someone can paint or draw. The challenge is to understand and access the tacit and behavioural knowledge we all have of our surrounding and environments and put that to work to shift perspective and disrupt normal associative models.

This process challenges the objectives and boundaries of expectation by including ideas and comments that would not have been raised with a singular approach to the brief. The codesign process is solution focused, taking its lead from the client’s goals and serving to produce spaces and designs that deliver maximum value for those that use them.

‘At the heart of Studio TILT’s codesign approach is the fundamental logic that developing the design of a space through participation with those who will ultimately use it makes practical sense,’ comments Oliver Marlow, Creative Director of Studio TILT.

Notes to Editors

About Studio TILTLondon-based design and architecture practice Studio TILT has gained an international reputation for its unique codesign methodology. Working across industries including Workplace, Healthcare, Government and culture, Studio TILT engages users in the design and making of their spaces, transforming the way people interact with each other and their environments. Selected projects include Whittington Health, Islington Council, The Proud Archivist, The Oxford Hub, Club Workspace and Derby Museums.

The process encourages users to explore the role of objects, furniture and design in their space, and its impact on their own culture and behaviour. The Studio is regularly asked to present at international design forums, join panel discussion and write articles for leading publications. The approach is the subject of a book ‘Codesigning Space’ written by Studio TILT founders Oliver Marlow and Dermot Egan, published by Artifice Books in 2013.

Studio TILT’s award-winning approach has led to participating in a number of exciting installations and initiatives with the Southbank Centre, V&A, London Design Festival, 100% Design and London Festival of Architecture.
