REVIEW OF THE YEAR:

The Chairman of the Department of Physiology, Dr. E. B. Brown, Jr. wason sabbatical from August on of this academic year and was working at OxfordUniversity with Drs. Dan Cunningham and Charles Michel. He was greatlymissed and the arduousness of his job is now fully appreciated by the ActingChairman, Dr. Alan Thompson. However, the programs of the departmentcontinued actively and aggressively in his absence. The department is fortunateto have obtained a new full time Assistant Professor, Dr. Merrill Tarr,

starting May 1, 1968. Dr. Tarr received very thorough training for his Ph. D.at Western Reserve University, completed his degree in the spring of 1967,and spent the summer and the past academic year as an NIH PostdoctoralFellow with Dr. John Moore at Duke University. Dr. Tarr has already obtaineda research grant from the Kansas Heart Association and is waiting to hearfrom a larger grant application to the Public Health Service. He alreadyhas several significant publications on muscle electrophysiology, specificallyh~art and smooth muscle. INe believe that he will make a very valuablemember of the department and will have a particularly important place in thecardiovascular group at this institution, since there has long been a needfelt for an ,electrophysio10gist. Dr. Alan Goodridge has been a highly valued

member of the department for almost two years and we regret that he hasdecided to leave as of July 1, 1968, to accept a position with the Banting andBest Department of Medical Research at the University of Toronto. TheToronto department is made up entirely of people interested in metabolism, which was an extremely attractive point to Dr. Goodridge.

Teaching of the Medical Physiology course this year was similar to that lastyear, with a readjustment of lecture assignments to cover the material inrespiration and acid-base balance usually covered by Dr. Brown. Largeamounts of time were invested by staff members this year in the meetingsof the various committees concerned with the over-all revision of the medical

school curriculum. In addition to meetings with individuals from otherdepartments, this department has had several extensive internal discus sionsof the problems involving curriculum revision. The concensus hasbeen thatthe basic first-year course in physiology could probably be two-thirds or les sof the present cour se in length, that the laboratories could be substantiallycut down in time, and that the time released in this way would be used betterin further contacts with third and fourth-year students.

With respect to the discussion in last year's progress report concerning theproblems imposed by the present space available for teaching, additionalexperience during the past academic year has accentuated some of theseproblems. It appears that of the four laboratories now available for studentteaching jointly by the Physiology and Pharmacology Departments, one ispoor for teaching purposes and another is almost impossible because ofproblems in space, physical arrangement of the room, and ventilation. Inaddition, problems in obtaining rooms for conferences and examinations, as wellas informal unplanned discussion of experiments, have become more acuteduring the past year.

Our graduate program in the past year took a real step forward with sixPh. D. candidates completing their two-day written and their oral preliminaryexamlnations succes sfully.

Employee Recognition Awards were made May 23, 1968. In our Departmentfour members were recognized, with five year awards to Dr. E. B. Brown, Jr.,Dr. Alan Thompson, and Constance Leonard. Dr. G. N. Loofbourrow wasgiven the 15 year award.

AMA-AAMC Accreditation Visit by the Liaison Committee was made to our. Department in January.
