LUMINOSITY YOUTH SUMMITEleven of Gunnedah's youth have just

returned from an "inspiring" and "encour-aging" trip of a lifetime to the annual Luminosity Youth Summit.

The three-day summit, held in Port Macquarie, featured speakers from a variety of backgrounds so "everyone got something out it".

Gunnedah Shire Council's youth devel-opment officer Ellen Valler accompanied the young people, aging from 12-22, to experience the summit.

"Friendships were formed and older ones looked after the younger ones but they all valued each others opinions so that was really positive," Ms Valler said.

"It's a fantastic opportunity for young people to go because it's so youth-fo-cused."

The theme of this year's summit was 'Dangerous Ideas', which focused on thinking big, daring to dream, and taking calculated risks to achieve success.

Ms Valler said this provided "different

ideas" which the youth could now apply to their new positions on Gunnedah Youth Council.

"It was about being yourself, overcom-ing adversity, getting involved with the community, and pursuing their dreams [so] ... they'll be able to apply those skills to what they'll be doing on the youth council," she said.

The young representatives were also treated to a martial arts class, a dance and performance class, and an open mic night after summit hours.

Speakers at this year's summit included biomedical engineer Dr Jordan Nguyen, science commentator Dr Karl Kruszel-nicki, magician and illusionist Cosentio, and Indigenous Marathon Project's Nat Heath.

ADAM McGUIRK STARS DURING NSW CHS UK CRICKET TOUR

One of Gunnedah's fastest rising cricket stars has shone during a recent tour of the United Kingdom.

Year 11 student, Adam McGuirk lined up for the NSW Combined High Schools (CHS) cricket team on the 23-day tour.

The right-handed batsman played a vital role in the 15-man squad's success on the field.

Playing games against the likes of Winchester, Glamorgan and Pentrych, the team finished with eight wins from 11 games.

McGuirk guided his team to victory with a half-century against Winchester.

However, it was not to be the young-ster's top score of the tour, with him

notching up a century during a club game against Westminster Abbey.

McGuirk said the tour was a "once in a lifetime experience".

"It was such an amazing experience," McGuirk said.

"Everyone we met while over there was really friendly and we got to play some really enjoyable cricket.

"It's a lovely country and I had the best time."

For McGuirk, the tour marked the first time he had played alongside many of his new teammates.

"I had played against all of them at some stage or another," he said.

"But aside from Issac Baker, this was

the first time I had played with pretty much the other 13 guys.

"It didn't really matter though, we all got along really well and played some really good cricket."

McGuirk said the four-day Tonbridge cricket festival was a highlight of the tour.

"There was a lot of really talented crick-eters playing at the festival," he said.

"In fact, we even played against a guy who will play for the United Arab Emir-ates at the upcoming under-19 World Cup.

"As well as that, pretty much all of the opposition batsmen were just so confi-dent.

"They had no fears about playing ramp shots and reverse shots, which made for some really good cricket."

Playing his club cricket for Old Boys in the Tamworth District Association, McGuirk said the tour had left him hungry for more success.

"I'd love to go back and play a season over there once I finish high school," he said.

"It was just so much fun playing over there, I'd love to give it a really good go in a couple of years.

"The big thing I took from the tour was the improvement to my mental tough-ness.

"The conditions meant that a lot of times you just had to be mentally tough and hang in there.

"That mental toughness is something I'll look to take with me that's for sure."

Year 12 students held a Pyjama Day on Friday, August 2 to raise funds for their Formal. Students and staff donated a gold coin to participate in the fun.

There was also a guess the number of lollies in the jar com-petition. If you guessed correctly and you could win the whole jar!

Year 12 students raised more than $200. Thank you to every-one who participated.

Annual AFL clash vs St Mary's CollegeThe friendly rivalry between Gunnedah

High School and St Mary's College contin-ued when both schools took to the field to battle it out in the annual AFL match for the coveted Brian Lenton Shield on Thursday, July 4.

Named after Gunnedah AFL legend Brian Lenton, the game has seen many great highlights in previous years, with St Mary's taking home the top prize in 2018.

Year 12 student Ash White designed the jerseys for this special game. They feature a Goanna totem.

While the Gunnedah High Goanna's played well, they couldn't bring home the win.

This year's game, like those in the past, was part of both schools NAIDOC Week commemorations.

The Rural sector can breathe a sigh of relief knowing the future of farming will be in safe hands.

Gunnedah's own Haylee Murell is among a dozen students from across northern NSW who have been recog-nised for their dedication to the agricul-ture industry at the Royal Agricultural Society Foundation scholarship night in Armidale.

The students have shown a real passion for rural issues and a determination to make a difference in the bush, Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall said.

"Many family run operations are strug-gling to see a future past the end of this

drought but this passionate and moti-vated scholarship recipients demonstrate that not only is the industry strong, but there are many innovative young people ready to take on the challenge," Mr Mar-shall said.

Scholarships provide up to $6000 for full-time study or $3000 for part-time study.

The Northern Tablelands recipients were Alistair Scott, Cassie McBean, Ellen Coote and Haylee Murrell.

"They are all passionate about the future of agriculture and rural commu-nities and want to ply their skills," Mr Marshall said.

GUNNEDAH HIGH SCHOOL

Mr Ken White Relieving Principal

As is always the case at Gunnedah High, we have managed to pack a lot into our first 3 weeks back this term. Here are some things that have either just hap-pened or about to happen soon.

HIGH ACHIEVERS AWARDS It was a privilege to attend our recent High Achievers awards in the school gymnasium last week. These awards recognised the academic achievements of students in each of their classes. Excel-lent attendance was also recognised at this event. It was great to see so many families and friends attend to support our award winners.

SUBJECT SELECTIONS – STAGE 5 AND STAGE 6Year 8 students begin the next stage of their educational journey with their Year 9 elective subject selections over the next couple of weeks. They will join Year 9 students in choosing which elective subjects they will study for the Record of School Achievement (ROSA). The school has organised a subject selection night to assist with information and advice for students to select course that match their interests and career goals

Year 10 students will also attend a subject selection night to assist with their Year 11 and 12 subject selections. They will also have small group interviews with our Careers Adviser, Mrs Ellis and meet with Head Teachers to assist with appropriate subject selections to match ability and career goals. Students will be given a unique code and then go online to choose their subject.

Our school website has lots of informa-tion about the subjects offered to stu-dents and also instructions to support the subject selection process.

EDUCATION WEEK ASSEMBLYThe Namoi Partner Schools group is conducting its annual Education Week assembly on Friday, August 9. The venue this year is the Gunnedah Town Hall and the event commences at 11am. The Namoi Partner Schools combined choir and GS Kidd choir will be performing and each school will be presenting awards to nominated students, community mem-bers and staff. This year’s Education Week theme is “every student, every voice”. Everyone is welcome to attend.

HSC TRIALS AND YEAR 11 EXAMS Our HSC trials run from Friday, August 16 through to Friday, August 23 and exam schedules have been issued to year 12 students. Mr Tony Moran, our HSC Presiding Officer, will assist in conducting the exams which have been organised by Miss Small. This will allow students and Mr Moran to work together to establish expectations and routines before the actual HSC begins, hopefully allowing for smoother HSC exam conditions and support.

Year 11 exams will run during week 9 and a timetable will soon be forthcoming.

STUDENT REWARDS DAY Congratulation to our eligible Bronze and Silver awards winner who were invited to attend our Term 2 rewards trip to New-castle. In recognition of their positive contribution to the school, these students were treated to a Knights home game in Newcastle and also an opportunity to go shopping in the large Charlestown Square complex. We have had great feedback from the event and we look forward to acknowledging our positive student efforts in other ways later in the year.

PARENT / TEACHER EVENING.This was held last week, and was an opportunity for parents of students in years 7-12 to book an appointment time with their teacher to discuss their child’s learning. Booking sheets were sent home with the reports at the end of last term.

I will need to evaluate how these eve-nings run as I was a little disappointed at the less than expected turnout for the night. I will undertake some random sampling and surveying to see how we can work better to make this information opportunity more effective.

YEAR 6-7 TRANSITION DAYSOur regular Year 6-7 transition days are continuing over the next couple of weeks, and are proving to be quite successful. It has been a delight to welcome our prospective students to the school and to see them engaging in our school activi-ties.

TERM 3 STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAYJust a final reminder that our Staff Devel-opment Day is running on Wednesday. August 21 (AgQuip Wednesday) and so regular classes will not be operating.

If there is anything you would like to con-tact me about regarding our school and/or your child’s learning, please don’t hes-itate to contact me via my email address [email protected]
