MISSION

Students on Target (SOT) is an organization at Louisiana State University that is dedicated to promoting

responsible choices regarding alcohol. We seek to create student programs that provide alternatives to high- risk alcohol consumption. Students on Target strives to promote a healthy campus community by hosting a large-scale concert and festival that is substance-free. The festival has become a favored LSU tradition located on the

campus parade grounds known as Groovin’ on the Grounds. We believe that by creating a positive and fun environment that encourages healthy and safe social practices, students will make safer choices regarding the use of alcohol.

HISTORY SOT began in the fall of 1997 as an innovative program with representatives from all across campus including LSU Student

Government, Student Media, Student Initiatives, Union Program Council, and the Wellness Education Department. Over the years SOT has been shuffled through many different departments, but today finds its home in Student Government. The organization is open to all LSU students interested in making a difference in the campus social culture. Students on Target attempts to work with other campus organizations including the Residence Hall Association and Greek organizations to help create an even larger positive impact on the entire student body at Louisiana State University. Throughout the year, Students on Target hosts a wide variety of events and programs that are aimed at encouraging a healthy lifestyle through alcohol awareness. From give-a-ways in Free Speech Alley to a large outdoor concert featuring national talent, Students on Target really looks to promote safe decisions.

THE UNIVERSITY

Set against an idyllic backdrop of towering oaks, Louisiana State University is widely considered one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation. LSU is a community of more than 34,000 faculty, staff and students from every state and more than 120 countries. It serves as the state’s flagship institution and is close to the hearts of most Louisianans. It

is said that LSU students and alumni “bleed purple and gold” and it is their love for the university that makes the institution so unique. Academically, LSU boasts some of the best programs in the nation and a student body whose qualifications are getting consistently higher with each incoming class. LSU’s nationally ranked teams and wildly enthusiastic fan base make the Fighting Tigers one of the most menacing opponents in NCAA, but the southern hospitality offered by its supporters makes for tailgating that is unparalleled. The students at LSU are known for their ability to have fun and jump head first into the college experience. Overall, Louisiana State University offers an atmosphere that only it can. Geaux Tigers!

BATON ROUGE

Louisiana's capital city, Baton Rouge has the homespun hospitality and charm of a small town, as well as the energy and vitality expected in a flourishing city on the upswing. Located less than an hour from New Orleans, Baton Rouge maintains its own unique identity as bustling metropolitan area with political and industrial strengths. Alongside the Mississippi River, the romance of the Old South and the magic of Acadian French tradition meet to create a unique cultural heritage and fascinating history that give the city its distinctive flavor. The city offers up spicy delicacies, a thriving music scene, and an air of celebration that can only be chalked up to its Cajun roots

BATTLE OF THE BANDS

Each fall, aspiring musicians from Baton Rouge and beyond vie for one of the most valued prizes in town — a chance to be the opening act for Groovin’ on the Grounds. While many will apply, only a handful get the opportunity to perform at SOT’s Battle of the Bands. For those few, they get the chance to play to one of the biggest crowds of their life and fight for spots not only at Groovin’ on the Grounds, but for gigs with local clubs and music venues. In 2004, SOT brought LSU’s Greek Amphitheatre, once a favored location for music on campus, back to life. Over a thousand students and community members showed up to cheer on their favorite local band or simply to enjoy a night of free music. The evening kicked off at sunset and went on into the night where attendees enjoyed some of the best music in town and donned their glow-in-the-dark favors to light up the darkened amphitheatre.

DEAD DAY - DON’T BECOME A STATISTIC

“Dead Day” will be held early in the spring semester in order to raise aware-ness of the troubling statistics on alcohol-related deaths among young people. Several student leaders campus wide will participate in this event in order to help SOT get the message out about the importance of responsible drinking. The chosen “dead” students will wear all black and remain silent the entire day as representation of the thousands of young people that are killed in alcohol-related accidents. SOT will run an ad in LSU’s Reveille to inform the student body of the event, as well as the alarming statistics that many students may not know. MOCKTAILS, NOT COCKTAILS

A sober twist on a refreshing drink! SOT will distribute this tasty treat to students during our alcohol awareness week activities and during the festival at Groovin’. These mocktails will be distributed in souvenir cups with the recipe printed on them.

GROOVIN’ ON THE GROUNDS

While Battle of the Bands provides excitement and awareness in the fall, its only a taste of what’s to come. Each spring, the Parade Grounds of LSU come alive with a favored student tradition, Groovin’ on the Grounds. The event, sponsored by Students on Target, is a one day event that includes a festival, a hefty musical lineup and an opportunity for students to learn the importance of making responsible choices. The festivities kick off at around noon with the Wellness Festival and continue on through the night with an all-star concert. Not surprisingly, thousands make their way to Groovin’ on the Grounds and feel the impact of what Students on Target deems “a good time, NOT wasted.” On a spring afternoon, when students are itching to get out of classes, Air walks, inflatable slides and games, along with a world of attractions and booths, take over the Parade Grounds. Students flock from all over campus to revel in the free fun and games awaiting them at the festival. Students have a chance to grab a meal, climb a portable rock wall and increase their knowledge of alcohol and its effects. They can place a special focus on their health by stopping by to give blood, picking up a spring break survival kit and trying out “drunk goggles” to demonstrate the effects of alcohol on driving. Beyond all the attractions and games, a flurry of activities occur throughout the day. From yoga demonstrations to free massages to opportunities to meet campus celebrities, it’s packed full of activity! After the festival ends, the Parade Grounds of LSU come alive when the Groovin’ on the Grounds’ outdoor concert begins . The concert is the highlight of the day and definitely the chief attraction for students and locals. In the past, Groovin’ has been host to a very diverse musical lineup that has included Top 40 acts such as The Verve Pipe, Vertical Horizon, and the Gin blossoms, MTV favorites Stroke 9, Top 40 Country act Andy Griggs, and critically acclaimed artists such as Nappy Roots and Cee-Lo Green. Each year, the acts for the concert get bigger, and not

surprisingly, so do the crowds. By the end of the night, thousands have made their way to the parade grounds to feel the impact of what Students on Target deems “a good time, NOT wasted.”

Groovin’ on the Grounds has truly become a staple for Louisiana State University students, but reaches even farther into the community. The festival and concert, which are free and open to the public, draws students and young people from throughout Baton Rouge and the surrounding area. Members of the diverse local community make their way to the event each year to take in the sites and seize the opportunity to enjoy a day of music and fun.

TRADITION

We hope that March 11, 2005 will be a day all LSU students will remember as one of the most incredible FREE concerts LSU has ever had to offer. We also hope to make our wellness festival a big hit by including a wide variety of student organizations and local businesses. Although Groovin’ on the Grounds is always a good time, this year we hope

to expand our festival, get bigger name national talent and draw a diverse crowd of thousands of students that come to enjoy themselves and have “a good time not wasted.” The festival has always been a success; however, this year we are thinking BIG. We are hoping to have the entire day filled with activities that will be appealing to all types of students. We hope that many student organiza-tions will join forces with SOT in order to fill the parade grounds with inflat-ables, games and other forms of entertainment. We have already begun to inform student organizations all across campus about this wonderful event we are planning. We hope to see the LSU Recreation Center support us and provide students with athletic equipment to play sports and show them a fun way to maintain a healthy lifestyle. We have already asked the Wellness Education Center to continue sup-porting SOT and help us to spread the wellness message by sponsoring events that bring awareness of responsible decisions and possible alterna-tives to otherwise bad choices. We hope to offer students free massages and free workout sessions to again show students there are stress relief methods that are effective and healthy. We are also hoping to have several presentations and appearances throughout the day. We are inviting LSU athletes to support our cause by signing autographs and giving out posters at the festival. We also hope to have performances by dance

teams, and we hope that Mike the Tiger will come out and support our cause as well. We have requested the Blood Center to come to LSU and allow students the opportunity to donate blood. We also hope that the LSU police department and the Baton Rouge police department will join us at the festival and educate students on the dangers of drinking and driving. Concessions will be sold throughout the day, and we will have a few free goodies distributed by generous organizations. As night falls, the festival attractions will come down, and our incredible concert will kick off. We hope to pro-vide LSU students and the Baton Rouge community with a line up that is exciting and diverse. Due to our very limited budget we have difficulty arranging a con-cert with fresh, new artists. This year, we hope to have

increased our budget enough to provide us with the funds to have an incredible line up of new artists that are popular among a wide variety of musical tastes. We are thinking BIG this year. We want a BIG festival, and we want to follow it with a BIG concert. We have a BIG message that we want to get out to the public. And we want to deliver this message in the most excit-ing and effective way possible.

sponsorship information

DEAR FRIENDS:

Students on Target is sure that March 11, 2005 will mark a banner year for Groovin’ on the Grounds. The event will kick off shortly after lunchtime with a bustle of fun to include a wide variety of interactive games and food galore. As the class day winds down, Groovin’ will just be getting revved up for an afternoon of festivities and an evening of music that will bring the Parade Grounds to capacity. Because we have our goals set high to make this the biggest LSU event of the year, Students on Target needs your help. In this packet, you will find our mission to promote responsible choices regarding alcohol consumption, our growing history from a modest rock concert to a full-day festival, our alcohol free educational programs such as Dead Day, Links for Life, Mock Tails and much more. We ask you to browse through this packet and glance at our sponsorship information. I think you will find that what we are trying to do more than anything is send a positive sober message to all of LSU. What you will get as a sponsor is a wide range of on-going and event advertisement to thousands of students, but more importantly, you will also get recognition within the Baton Rouge community as a business dedicated to promoting a “good time not wasted.” We look forward to hearing from you, and putting your name in association with this LSU tradition.
