Introduction: Addressing your question!
You often ask, “How is what I am learning now going to help me when I
get older? When will I ever use this?” These activities will address your
question.
You will compare the work methods and duties of a student with
those observed in the world of work.
Think/Pair/Share
Step One: (Think) On the sticky notes provided, in point form, answer
the following questions on your own. Use one sticky note for each
question.
Step Two: (Pair) Pair up with a classmate and share your ideas. Then go
back to your original answer and you may add to your previous response.
Step Three: (Share) Share your responses with the class.
Step Four: You will be given time to reflect upon the classroom
discussions. You may then go back to your original response and add to it
with a different colour (red pen).

A) Why do you come to school?
B) Why is education important?
C) What subjects are you learning in school?
D) What else, besides the subjects taught in school, are you learning?
Hints:
1-Think about what you are doing when you are working in your
subjects,
2-Think about what you do when you are working on a school project
(individual or group),
3-Think about what you do when you spend time playing with your
friends.
E) We need water to live. We need food to survive. We need a roof
over our head to keep up safe and warm. These are all essential in
order to live.
What does the word “essential” mean?
Being able to use the apps in a cell phone is a skill. Being able
to kick a ball when playing soccer is a skill. Being able to read
and write are skills. What essential skills do you need to be
a student?
As a student, what work methods do you use? Think about
what you do when you are in school and working.

Part Two: Understanding Essential Skills
A) Since the nine essential skills have been identified, discuss, with a
classmate, the definition of each of those essential skills. Note
your definition on the sticky notes provided. Write one definition
per sticky note.
B) You will also be required to explain, with examples, how each of the
essential skills is being developed in school within your job/duty as
a student. Write your examples on the sticky notes provided.
C) You will be allowed to place all of your sticky notes on the
designated poster.
D) Gallery Walk
E) Discuss what left an impression on you. (Note: You may need to use
this information during your reflection).
Part Three: Comparing Student Duties and Work Methods with Those
in the World of Work
In the introduction, we discussed that students use various work
methods. Through this activity, you will be able to determine how the
work methods you are developing in school go hand in hand with the
essential skills and how they are being developed in school in your role
as a student.
With a classmate, discuss and note your duties as a student as well as
how you are developing work methods and essential skills. Compare how
your student work methods and duties are similar to those in the work
place. Place an (x) in the appropriate column. Are they similar or
different?

In your oral presentation remember to do the following:
Select and report three work methods, three duties, and three essential
skills you are currently developing as students which are also used in the
occupation you researched. Include three of your reflections in the oral
presentation. Finally, present your findings and your reflections to the
class in an oral presentation.
The oral presentation may be done in triads, small groups, or to the whole
class. You will be evaluated for your oral presentation based on the
criteria in the checklist.
