Student’s worksheet

Task 3 – Reading 2 Sasha recently did her first car boot sale and was interviewed about her experience. Sasha was asked a series of questions, and the transcript of her answers is below.

• Firstly, try to write a question for each answer • Then, your teacher will give you the actual

questions Sasha was asked. • Match each question to an answer. • Finally, look at the discussion questions and

talk to your partner about them. Sasha’s answers

a. Question: ___________________________________________________ My children are getting bigger now and they’re too old for some of the toys and clothes they had when they were small. Also, my husband is a DVD addict and I love reading - we had so many old books and DVDs that we were running out of space! We thought, rather than giving our unwanted items away, that we could make some money from them.

b. Question: ___________________________________________________ It was five pounds to have a pitch, but the money went to charity so we were happy to pay it. There was no entrance fee for the general public.

c. Question: ___________________________________________________ We did a bit of research online and chose one which we had heard was popular. Plus it was quite close to our home, so we didn’t have far to travel.

d. Question: ___________________________________________________ We always take care of our things so they were already in good condition, but I made sure all the clothes were washed and ironed, and that everything was clean. I also made sure that there were no missing parts from any of the toys. I put a price tag on most things, but we decided to sell the DVDs at two pounds each or three for five pounds.

e. Question: ___________________________________________________ It was a bit chilly, but the sun was shining and it didn’t rain. We were really pleased about that!

f. Question: ___________________________________________________ We set our alarm clock for 5.30am because the gates opened at 6.30am. We arrived at about 6.15am and it was already very busy. It’s good that we arrived early, because some sellers arrived at 6.30am but there was no room left for them!

g. Question: ___________________________________________________ Mostly people were very polite and paid what we asked for straight away. Other people were quite pushy and wanted to pay a much lower price. One lady was buying some toys for her new granddaughter. She was a lovely, friendly lady, and she bought a lot of things, so we decided to give her a teddy for free.

h. Question: ___________________________________________________ The first couple of hours were really busy but, after that, it was a bit quieter. We stayed until about lunch time. We had quite a lot left over, but I think we sold about half of our things.

i. Question: ___________________________________________________ It was amazing – we made over £150 from our unwanted items!

j. Question: ___________________________________________________ We are already planning our next car boot sale!

B: Cheers, mate. You won’t regret it.

A: Will you take three quid?

B: It’s a bargain at £5! It’s an antique! How about £4?

A: That sounds a bit steep! I’ll give you £2.50.

B: The vase is a fiver.

A: Thanks. Bye.

B: It’s yours for £3.50. And that’s my final offer.

A: Hi. How much for the vase?

Hello. How much does the vase cost, please?

The vase costs five pounds.

I think that is too expensive. It’s not worth that amount of money. I am prepared to pay £2.50.

I think five pounds is good value. It is an antique. Would you be prepared to pay four pounds?

Would you accept three pounds?

You can purchase it for £3.50. I am not going to sell it for any less than that.

I don’t want to buy it, thank you. What is the price of the clock?

The clock costs one pound.

I see. A pound sounds fair. I would like to buy the clock.

Thank you very much. I think you will be pleased with your purchase.

Thank you. Goodbye.
