Prompt: Given the claims you have made, what is your personal opinion of the Hot Coffee case? Provide justification as to why you believe this and determine if the settlement was just. Student 1 Excerpt:
I think that the plaintiff got what she deserved from the remedies because she went
through a lot of pain and suffering, and had to pay a lot of medical expenses. I believe
this because this will open McDonalds eyes to see that they follow safety procedures to
protect the public from injuries like this.
Student 2 Excerpt:
At first when I had heard about this case I had heard so many different stories. I
heard Mrs. Liebeck was driving the car, that she was only burned a little bit, and many
more things. When I watched the documentary I realized so many stories had been
wrong. Mrs. Liebeck wasnt driving and had 3rd degree burns so badly it caused for
many surgeries on her legs. It made me feel really bad for her and made me feel bad for
not knowing the whole story before making judgments. I think rewarding Mrs. Liebeck
for her medical expenses was fair and the right thing to do. McDonalds obviously had
their coffee way to hot if it caused 3rd degree burns on a womans legs, what would it
have done to someones throat? McDonalds also had many other burn victim cases in
the past that no one had known about until this case. Im glad someone brought light to
this issue so no one else gets burnt like this and Im glad Mrs. Liebeck got money for her
injuries.
