Acknowledgement of Country

The Malaysian Students' Council of Australia – South Australia Chapter (MASCA SA) would like to Acknowledge

that the land we meet here in Adelaide Plains is the traditional land for the Kaurna people and that we respect

their spiritual relationship with their Country.

We understand the importance of this relationship and we pay respects to the Elders, past and present.

We also acknowledge the Kaurna people as the traditional custodians of the Adelaide region and that their cultural and

heritage beliefs are still as important to the living Kaurna people today.

About Australia

Australia, also known as Down Under, is the world’s largest island and the sixth largest country in the world.

The history and culture of Australia predates thousands of years ago when the custodians of the land, the Indigenous Australians (also known as Aboriginals) roamed the land until the British landed in 1788, proclaiming Australia for Great Britain and beginning the era of colonisation of the land.

Slowly, the land transitioned from colonial self-governance, to federation, and finally being a Commonwealth of the British Empire in 1901.

From these humble beginnings, Australia has developed into a multicultural land; offering vast opportunities, and offering everyone a “Fair Go”.

Now, Australia ranks highly in many indexes across the globe, such as the Legatum Prosperity Index, despite originally being a site for convicts transported by the British!

Australia is a democratic country and is run by a Prime Minister, with the Queen of Great Britain remaining as the head of State and is represented in Australia by the Governor General. The country is divided into six States and two Territories, which are partially self-governing.

South Australia

From the lush vineries of the Barossa Valley to the picturesque views of Mt. Gambier, South Australia or normally abbreviated as SA is a state in the southern central part of Australia.

Covering some of the most arid parts of Australia, it boats a total land area of nearly 1 million square kilometres, the fourth largest among Australia’s states and territories.

It is a state no stranger to wilderness, but with the wilderness captures the beauty of the Australian outback incomparable to many places around the world.

Some of the famous landmarks include the Southern Ocean coastline lined by the sheer cliffs of the Great Australian bight and the empty expanse of the Nullabor Plain, the quintessential experience of an “Australian Outback”.

The capital, Adelaide, is known as the Festive State and deserves every recognition of it. Brining talents from all around in the annual Adelaide Fringe Festival, the cultural festivities that occur frequently, it is no wonder that Adelaide consistently ranks among the best places to live in the world.

What is MASCA?

The Malaysian Students’ Council of Australia (MASCA) is the official student representative council for Malaysian students in Australia; founded on April 2001 in Sydney, Australia.

MASCA strives to serve the interest and welfare of Malaysian students in Australia, but not forgetting to create a community, where home is never too far away.

Established across 6 states and 1 territory (except Northern Territory), it is the pinnacle driving force in uniting Malaysians here; regardless of their backgrounds, students and non-students alike.

Malaysian Students’ Organisation (MSO)

Malaysian Students’ Organisations (MSO) are student organisations founded to serve Malaysian students.

Their scope normally encompasses the students that belong to a certain university (for example, the Adelaide University Malaysian Students Organisation, AUMSA, for The University of Adelaide), or could be state-wide as well (SALAM for South Australia).

Most MSOs are representative bodies of Malaysians in each university or living communities.

Education Malaysia (EMA)

Education Malaysia Australia (EMA) is governed by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education Malaysia.

In Australia, EMA is officially recognised by the Australian Government as the Consulate of Malaysia (Education Section). There is also a consular office for Malaysians in New South Wales.

EMA functions as a Ministry’s representative for promoting the internationalization of education; in research, development and innovation.

EMA also manages the welfare of Malaysian students in Australia (both under scholarship and self-funded students) which includes providing opportunities for these students to develop their talents and soft skills.

Joining MASCA South Australia

The council of MASCA SA is elected from students who is a member from one of the Malaysian Students’ Organisations (MSOs). The Annual General Meeting is held at the end of each year, where new leaders take up the mantle to serve Malaysian students in South Australia!

Joining MSO

A great way to start joining the Malaysian Students Organisation is to come by our Meet and Greet Sessions! MASCA SA organises these sessions once a semester, and there all MSOs in South Australia are present there. Apart from that, the Orientation week for some universities do feature MSOs, and is always worth checking them out.

For more information about MSOs and SA, feel free to contact me, SA

Customs and Quarantine

Declare it! The Australian Government takes biosecurity and the import of goods very seriously, and we highly advise new students (and old students alike!) to not go around the laws imposed when entering Australia. Heavy fines may apply, and it would certainly be not the way you want to start your education journey in South Australia!

For information on the type of food you can bring into Australia (such as your favourite chocolate drink): agriculture.gov.au/travelling/bringing-mailing-goods

For further information on what you can bring to Australia and what you should leave back home: border.gov.au/Trav/Ente/Brin/Can-I-bring-it-back

• Working restriction of up to 40 hours per fortnight

• Remain enrolled in your registered course • Informing any change of address in

Australia• Maintain Overseas Student Health Cover

(OSHC)
