INTRODUCTION

• Students will elect to take short courses that take place for all students on Wednesday afternoons from 12:45 to 14:15. They are led by our own teachers, support staff, and by visiting tutors who are experts in their field. Students may stay at the college after 14:15 to access the library or take part in our extra-curricular activities.

• The electives programme does not in any way replace our diverse range of extra-curricular activities; our full programme of lunch and after college activities will continue.

• The programme has been designed to broaden student experience and develop skills that universities and employers find attractive in potential candidates. There is also a strong link between students who take part in a range of extra-curricular activities and successful outcomes in examination results (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/8080865.stm)

• Students will usually take a different elective each term. • Electives will usually include groups of students across the Year 7 – Year 11 age range. • The electives programme is subsidised by the college budget. Voluntary contributions will be needed to cover materials,

transport, hire of facilities and employing specialist tutors. Students can take home items made. To ensure viability of a course enough contributions will be needed to cover these costs. Costs are included in the course detail.

• The cost listed is for the 1 term (6 week) elective. Subsequent events, sessions or courses related to the short course may well incur further costs.

• The electives listed will only run if there is sufficient interest. Electives all have a minimum number required to run. In the event of this number not being reached or insufficient contributions being received the course will not run.

• Electives run at different times during the year and there are compulsory courses that students are required to follow. It may not be possible to timetable all first choices for this reason.

• Please ensure that all 8 preference boxes are completed. If they are not and it is not possible to accommodate your 1st choices you will be allocated to an elective.

• Do opt for a variety of electives (Try not to opt for more than 1 course in a particular subject area; food, sport or art for example).

COMPULSORY COURSES 2009-10 The following topic areas are covered by all students in each of the years and will take place for each year group during an appropriate term.
