Hume Valley

School

• Hume Valley School is a special school, established in 1968, catering for the needs of students with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities. The school currently caters for approximately 336 students from 5 to 18 years of age.

• The school services the areas between Wallan, Coburg, Fawkner and Airport West for families within a broad range of socio-economic and multicultural backgrounds. Enrolment at the school is undertaken once a student meets the eligibility criteria for the Students with Disabilities and Impairments Program (Intellectual Disability). Students commence after Departmental approval has been granted.

Student Voice through our

SRC and Changemakers

• Amplify is a practice guide for school leaders and teachers. It explains how to create the conditions, employ the practices and develop the behaviours, attitudes and learning environments that are conducive to student voice, agency and leadership. Whatever their current starting points, school leaders and teachers can draw on this resource to facilitate rich conversations, collaborate and take actions to empower students.

Who is the SRC?

The Student Representative Committee will be a committee of students that represent the voice of our students. These teams will lead and facilitate changes within our school community. In Term 2, the SRC team begins their role in office

and hold the position till the end of the year.

This is made up of 3 committees:

All Student Representative

Committee(SRC) will:- Attend compulsory meetings where they are expected to share their opinion and advice.

- Gather information on student voice from peers through assemblies and presentations.

- Work in conjunction with relevant staff members to facilitate the desired changes as determined in said meetings.

The SRC requires candidates are genuinely committed to the role.

The Teachers’ Role

Changemakers

• Our Changemakers project was in response to the significant issue of disengagement we faced in 2018. We created a framework which would ultimately harness student voice and empower teachers to engage all students. Each step of the framework ultimately leads to creating an engaging unit of work driven by students. It focused on three main areas:

• COLLABORATION and the best way to do that;

• REFLECTIVE PRACTICE; and

• HARNESSING STUDENT VOICE.

- In late 2017 several staff completed their Certificate IV in training and assessment in order to offer our students a greater number of Vocational Education and Training (VET) options. This led to students (and their parents/carers) from years 10-12 preferencing subjects of personal interest for for the first time.

- VET subjects primarily assessed through practical activities that benefit the school and wider community.

- Since introducing these options we have seen a significant increase in student attendance and engagement.

2018 School Production

- With community partnerships HVS have introduced a number of subjects for students to select that occur off campus, including;

- School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATS) in Warehousing at Northpoint in Tullamarine and Food Processing at Water to All in Avondale Heights. Students are travel trained to both locations where they undertake duties and complete qualifications relevant within each industry. Students are payed for their time while working.

- TAFE Tasters with KANGAN Richmond and Broadmeadows (Hair and Beauty, Retail Bakery, Engineering).

External VET options

During staff planning sessions the team focused on developing flexible integrated VCAL units that allowed students to determine the direction of large scale projects. In 2018 the students planned a film festival and trivia night for parents and guests, which saw students;

- Script, storyboard, rehearse and film three short pieces for the ‘Focus on Ability’ Festival. One of which was shortlisted and screened at the Art’s Centre in Melbourne. - Compare and contrast quiz show formats, write questions and present them in front of peers and parents. Develop a scoring system and collect survey data for Family Feud rounds. - Complete administration duties including developing a budget, purchasing decorations, promoting the event, designing tickets and sourcing a prize for the winning team.- Develop a menu of finger foods for the event, research and write recipes and test and time them.

In 2019 the students are working on a ‘mystery’ role play event, or preparing for a Debutant Ball.
